Northwestern president says he ‘may have erred’ with 2-week suspension for football coach Pat Fitzgerald

Sounds like the baseball coach is in trouble as well

Scandalous behavior in Northwestern athletics isn’t limited to football.

Danny Parkins, afternoon co-host at The Score, reported on his show Monday that Northwestern coach Jim Foster “was the subject of an HR investigation that found him to have violated university policy by engaging in bullying and abusive behavior.” But Parkins said the school did not speak with any players on the team.

“I received a tip Sunday on the heels of the spotlight on the athletic department because of football,” Parkins said. “And then as you pulled at the thread, it just kept going and going and going.”

Our department’s annual review of all aspects of the Wildcats baseball program is ongoing,” an athletic department spokesperson said. “The well-being of our student-athletes remains Northwestern’s top priority.”

The football program, under coach Pat Fitzgerald, is under heightened scrutiny after the Daily Northwestern student newspaper revealed Saturday specifics of hazing incidents after the university suspended Fitzgerald two weeks without pay following an investigation. School president Michael Schill has since said he “may have erred” with the punishment.

On Monday, the Daily reported that three former football players alleged that a racist culture exists within the program, including racist attacks and remarks from the coaches and players. A Northwestern spokesperson told the Daily that the school was not aware of the allegations of racism.

Parkins said he spoke Sunday and Monday with nine sources around Northwestern baseball, including former coaches, people close to the program and current and former players. He also said he spoke with Foster for 30 minutes. Deviating from his regular show, Parkins read from prepared copy:

“Jim Foster has created a toxic environment that has run off coaches, broken the spirits of his team to the point where they likely will not be able to field a full roster this year and was the subject of an HR investigation that found him to have violated university policy by engaging in bullying and abusive behavior, making inappropriate comments about a female staffer and speaking negatively about his staff to other staff members. He also is alleged to have made comments that were racially insensitive and discouraged members of the team from seeking medical attention for their injuries.

“The university report did not find enough evidence to corroborate those allegations. However, the university did not speak to any players on the team while investigating those allegations. I did. And I have the specifics on all of the above allegations.”

Parkins said a player told him he was punished by running for nearly an entire 2 1/2-hour practice. Not only is that an NCAA violation, Parkins said, but Foster was an assistant at Rhode Island when a player died after a rigorous workout. Players told Parkins the run happened before the human-resources report was filed in November. The school began monitoring Foster after the report.

Foster made inappropriate comments about a female staffer and derogatory comments toward his staff and players. Players accused him of dissuading them from receiving medical treatment. In one example Parkins gave, a player with an elbow injury was told if he didn’t return by a certain day, he wouldn’t play. The player pushed himself and needed surgery. Another injured player told Parkins he was considering legal action.

Foster told Parkins that his reporting was a “hit piece,” that he disagreed with the HR report and that he denied dissuading players from seeing the trainer.

“Coaches complain. Maybe they wanted the job,” Foster, who was hired in June 2022, told Parkins. “Maybe the players aren’t good enough and are just making excuses or are disgruntled. Maybe it’s how they’re raised. It could be any of that stuff.”

The team went 10-40 in Foster’s first season, and Parkins said 15 players are in the transfer portal, including one who said Foster is the reason. Foster came to Northwestern from Army, where he was the 2022 Patriot League Coach of the Year and led the academy to four conference titles and NCAA Tournament appearances.
That is an astounding flame out. Fitz stuff is surprising because he's a pretty well respected coach for many years now.

Ferentz got a whole nothing burger for running a racist program. 2 weeks seems excessive.
“Racist” can be a horribly subjective (and inappropriate) term. Skin color, how you wear your clothes and hats to how the school prepares your training table food…..It’s a catch’all……Sometimes a young teenager who is homesick or having “girl friend troubles” can see racism in everything. Some times we can just be too sensitive to our surroundings…….I hope some here are paying attention because “it” can happen to anyone. For anything.

What was the hazing incident?
They dry humped freshman after rushing them in ‘purge’ like masks and tying them up. Also rumors of tying them up naked to poles and everyone slapping the freshman dicks. It all sounds really sexual assaulty

Northwestern already lost 5% of the fanbase over this:

Decent chance that fan is right.

NW probably ****ed the duck

Today. Obviously don't have details. Maybe it's something really explosive. I'd lean towards that not being the case, however. Ain't easy to win at NW
The theory is the current administration tried to dump this on Friday with the punishment. Evidently some more details got around to alumni. And the Board of Trustees stepped in. Thus the change in the President saying he may have erred.

Someone remind me again of why higher education is still involved in all this. You people make fun of me, but look in the mirror at the absurd system you are supporting.

Gettin' juicy...

A current Northwestern player, who asked to remain anonymous, also told ESPN on Sunday that the former player, whose hazing allegations late in 2022 launched the investigation, informed him of a detailed plan with the sole objective to take down Fitzgerald. The current player on Sunday relayed a conversation he said he had early this year with the former player to Northwestern trustees and other influential university figures.

"He just kept emphasizing, 'Yeah, it'll be OK. I'm just trying to get Coach Fitz fired,'" the current player told ESPN. "I don't think he ever acknowledged what he's saying is not true. It was just like, 'I might embellish or exaggerate to get Coach Fitz fired.' He said his sole goal was to see Coach Fitz rot in jail.

"The truth is none of that stuff happened in our locker room."

The current player said the former player told him he would go public with detailed allegations if the university's investigation did not result in Fitzgerald's dismissal and referenced the 2021 situation involving athletic director Mike Polisky, who stepped down amid media and public pressure nine days after being promoted. Polisky had been named as a defendant in a lawsuit filed by a former Northwestern cheerleader.

"He was thinking he could do the same with Coach Fitz, if he went to The Daily Northwestern and went public with it," the current player said.

Fritz will need the money. Former players are going to sue him as well. Doubt Northwestern will try to protect him either.
Who the hell knows what's true right now. As fast as NW acted you would assume they had something really well verified and substantial... if not... they may be in for a pounding.

As an Iowa fan? It's all good.

I would happily represent NW pro bono. Coach ball sack has no chance. Most employment contracts have automatic termination clauses for moral terpitude. Coach no neck knew this was going and I'm sure other players, acting as whistle blowers, have said he knew it and maybe even tacitly approved of the practice. See you in court counselor.

I hope Fitz sues their ass off. 100 million to Fitz!

Yes tots. Kazillions. Now pack your office and get the f out.
If Fitz beats’em in Court, NW has the wherewithal to pay “kazillions”.....they just completed a record breaking $6B fund raiser for the school....no school anywhere in the world has raised that much money for the dear old alma mater in history.
I’m just thinking in the deepest recesses of my mind that Fitz is getting railroaded here. Maybe not and it is NWs problem....

I am always reminded of my favorite Ralph Miller story."...One day during a basketball practice, Ralph realized his paycheck, his professional future and his family’s well-being was running up and down the basketball court in the jock strap of an 18 year old kid.

Might be a case of over reacting to fallout from their slap on the wrist with the original 2 week suspension.

To go from that to a firing in around 3? days would point to that.

I don't think that'd be enough time to actually verify some of the new allegations.

Would have been better to suspend him indefinitely while they do an investigation to corroborate the new allegations...

From what I understand, these weren't new allegations, but rather details that came to light after the announcement of the suspension.

The investigation couldn't prove or disprove that the HC knew about the hazing, but did conclude that he should have known. That's enough to warrant a firing in my book.

No no, Bins is going to need to know EVERY detail of the hazing before he can make an accurate judgement on if this was a just firing.

If it was known it's pretty amazing the original punishment was a 2 week suspension. Couple more heads should roll.

Assuming ex players with an agenda were not setting this up

Spaceman.....do you think it is possible that a player or two “had it in for Fitz” as alleged by some and Fitz is a victim of a lie?
I have seen this first hand back in “work days”....it can happen! Not saying it did....but the standard for firing a person should be based on the same criteria as might get one suspended or found “innocent”....

Portal is open for everyone for 30 days after a coaching change.
I might be wrong but I thought the NCAA eliminated that stipulation. I believe, however, players can be granted a waiver for mental health reasons. So if a Northwestern player could show that he was one of the victims of the hazing then he might be eligible to transfer.

Probably pepsi - haven't read all the posts in this thread - but just saw news updates that NW fired Fitz due to the incident.

Alright, just saw this news broke last night. In my defense, my phone's wifi was f*ed up for most the day yesterday & finally fixed it this morning. I get all my sports updates from there, so that's why I didn't see it until about 10 minutes ago.

Coach Prime went to Colorado, implemented a bunch of rules very similar to what Ferentz was doing at Iowa, and people said he was going to run a tight ship. No racism there.
