Northwestern St C Kendal Coleman has entered the transfer portal. 15.4 PPG/10.1 RPG/1.3 BPG. Three years left.

Hey, OP, that would be pretty cool. I have vivid memories of Alford's team blowing that huge lead and of NW State grabbing the loose ball in the corner and throwing in a game-winner at the buzzer. Bringing in a NW State guy would be an interesting move that might make sense. Karma?

Athletic and mobile......no 3 pt shots taken, but can rebound and shoots free throws at an okay percentage. This type of guy could come in knowing that he isn't guaranteed a starting spot and has a couple years to develop and contribute?

I am skeptical but sure, would be helpful.
1) guy from South difficult to bring up North
2) Fran hasn't shown willingness to bring in Portal guys that would jump existing players--JoshO and
Mulvey 1 year later should be in position to play.

Rebracca was really desperation after Nunge left and Bakari was a body to allow them to field a team+ Bakari had been previously recruited by Fran

How many scholarships are available next year? Ash has one this year, I think Connor and Rebraca would be "Covid years" and not count?

A lot is yet to be determined.

3 as of now, of which 2 are filled by Bowen and Dix.

Keegan would be one more for sure (yes for sure)

So we'll have at least 2 to fill if all the underclassman are back outside of Keegan.

Josh drops another 25 lbs. and we don't need another C.
That's probably true....and if Riley would add another 10/15 lbs of muscle we probably don't need another center either.

The conundrum is that the coaches would have to know that now or within the next 2/3 weeks in order to decide what to do with the transfer portal, right?

Assuming Kris stays, Keegan goes, then next year we are a post defender and an outside shooter from having (strictly my guess) a team that can compete for a B10 Championship and a strong NCAA tournament run.....

IF Josh O and/or Riley develop like we want....AND Josh Dix is ready to play by January, along with our returning guards improving their 3 point games....with all that occurring we don't need to bring anyone in. Hmmmm

I like it ...makes logical sense too.

Riley will need one more year of development imo ...unless he takes major strides this off season.

Big-O doesn't appear to be willing to put in the time to get in shape. Two full years in now and he still gets winded after two trips down the court. No bueno.

I agree redshirt Riley and bring another big guy in at the 5. Rebracca can backup/play the 4 and 5 if Keegan goes pro (more than likely).

A grad transfer already answers some questions about a transfer. Clearly someone that can get and stay eligible. Some maturity so they won't be stunned by the crowds and bright lights. Perhaps

Our first priority has to be a shooter, a very good shooter. Tony has gotten better, and will probably get better still, but this roster is missing a guard sized shooter. You cannot count on anything from a freshman. Josh Dix may never be able to play, we just don't know. But we do know there is one "shooting guard" on this team and hasn't necessarily shown himself to all that great a shooter.

I'm not entirely invested in the Payton or Kris as long-term defenders of what should be much smaller players.

It's likely that Riley or Josh O or both will develop into a much better player, a reliable reserve for Filip. My guess is Riley but Josh O might make a big jump. It sounds like health reasons might have been holding him back. If resolved he might be able to intensify his improvement.

I saw this guy play last weekend at the Southland tourney. Not that impressed
There will be better players in the portal. Find one that rebounds and protects the rim and can dunk 5 times a game if nothing else.

Dude, how many more years are gonna hope for JO to develop?

My goodness. It ain't happening
It certainly doesn’t look like he will develop, or get where we want/need. If I had to bet on it, I would bet that he doesn’t….that said, if there’s ANY lesson we should have learned from this season it’s that we as fans really don’t know much of anything that’s going on inside the program.

Recently Josh O made it known publicly that he dealt with a serious health issue late last year…one where doctors told him he might never play again. Now he appears to be back on track…. So, can he still get it done? Maybe or maybe not…..I hope so, but it’s not set in stone.

Amen. And remember that basketball-sized cyst that an Iowa basketball player had removed a few years ago? Damn, what was that kid's name? I wonder whatever happened to that fat guy with the low ceiling?

What?! He was a two-time BIG Player of the Year and National POY last year? And he's in the NBA now? Luka Garza, ya say? Huh. The name does sound familiar . . .

I seem to remember little difference between game clock and shot clock on our last possession and they weren't fouling. Should have launched a shot at shot clock buzzer. As long as it hits rim, game over. Bad coaching.

This is false. Rebracca was certainly NOT desperation. He had numerous other offers. This, among a few others, was the guy the Iowa staff really wanted. He produced what was needed this year in Spades, and was a tremendous add. I really cannot understand your thinking.

Sounds like you are looking for a Cliff Amoruyi type player. Not many tall athletes like that in the portal and when they do decide to transfer, the competition is fierce.

It could just be my impression, but the advent of the NCAA portal has kind of diminished the value coaches used to place on junior college players to fill gaps on their roster. I'm wondering if the Iowa staff even scouts JC players. There always seems to be a fair number of high D1 players coming out of JCs and there are a few such schools right in Iowa's neighborhood.

This kid is listed at 6'8, 220. Rebracca, who people have been complaining about not being big enough and wanting to be replaced is listed at 6'9, 230.

We have a pretty decent center coming in next year. Owen Freeman, a four star on some rating services, will be a Hawk next year. I would rather go after a high scoring power forward.

Isn’t he in the 2023 class? Maybe that’s what you are saying but he won’t be here next fall with Bowen and Dix, right?

To be clear, Freeman will graduate high school in 2023, and join the team in the fall of that year. He won't be on the team next year, 2022-23.

(Unless he pulls a Mulvey and reclassifies.)

Fair point in regards to JC's, but they haven't gone away so you'd have to assume they are still part of the process. Diminished somewhat because of the portal for sure, but you'd better not be asleep at the wheel and miss someone who can help.

I just think some of the better players that do enter the portal, should have Iowa on their radar if Iowa has interest in any specific position. We've got a good nucleus returning and an up tempo style. What's not to like?

Rebraca plays hard, but he's average at his very best relative to Big Ten Basketball IMO. And he's 10x's better than Bakari Evelyn was, also IMO. Finding an impact player thru the portal is difficult, but not impossible. Iowa has plenty to offer, the portal is part of recruiting, don't ignore it and get left behind.

Loyalty is a two-way street, and I'm a big advocate but IMO it's a practice that's damn near extinct from a school or an Athlete in today's world, so you better keep your eyes wide open to reality. I do think Iowa does the loyalty thing better than most, and they should feel good about that, but don't get married to it.

After this shocking discovery that doctors told him last year he may never play again, I almost have to wonder if he's capable of that type of effort.....
