Novice gambling... need some advice

Nevada does rather well in games that start in the evening.

Never bet on Iowa. Kirk will fvck you.

Parlays are the way to go.

Granted no method is fool proof, put together 3-4 home favorites to win (not against the spread). None would pay out much on their own, but add them together and it's good.

Bet parlays

Don't get mad. Get even (or better).

I'm a fan of taking home underdogs and underdogs in rivalry games (both with the points).

Always try to maximize your odds.

Example: Most lines are -110. You should be betting a minimum of $11 to win $10 (rather than $6 to win $5 or $17 to win $15).

It doesn't seem like much, but it adds up over the course of a season.

Always thought sports betting would be relatively "easy". Looking at lines, O/U, etc. Not enough choices really stand out. Only bet futures so far.

Any general advice you would have wanted when you first started?

My advice would be to bet what you know. Sounds easy, but I used to do some online gambling and found that I kicked ass on Big 10 football and Iowa in particular. However I sucked on pretty much everything else.

I would also make sure you can control it because I couldn’t. I got obsessed with it so much so that I was rushing home on my lunch hour to place a bet and betting on small college bb teams I had never actually seen play.
i wonder if there is gonna be a gambling addition problem in Iowa.

I know some of you will call me crazy for saying that but I have heard many Iowans say they are worried about it.

You’ll have winning weeks but never in the long run. If you’re one who can accept that and just have fun with it that’s the goal.

Good luck!

It's gambling in your phone. Yes, it completely will.

Ex - all of those Huskers fans that threw money on Nebraska to win the national title. The Council Bluffs casino is now at risk for > $200k, but that is a complete waste.

Guys will think they are being contrarian to appear smart and win big, but in reality they will lose money that they would normally spend more productively (ex eating out, buying a car, etc).

C'mon Fran. Of course there will be, is this your first day on Earth?

Iowa isn't different than anywhere else in that regard, and it might be a higher % because it's now "legal", but anyone with a dollar and a clue who wants to bet on Sports has been able to do that since the beginning of time.

There have always been bookies, there still will be IMO, they'll just have a harder time operating now because when The State gets involved, they'll want to squeeze every penny they can out of it. The Government wants their cut, they always do, so Joe the Plumber that took a couple grand worth of football bets from the locals every week and nobody cared, will now be under the watchful eye of The State. Book it (pun intended).

Most local Law Enforcement are aware who they are, and surely some place a bet or two as well (believe it or not, but Cops are people too). As long as they remain a small time operation most look the other way, guys shooting the breeze, having a cocktail, playing poker and wagering on Sports. Its the American Way.

And don't think for a second it's just Average Joe, those guys sitting in the suites are involved too, there's just another 0 or two added to the equation. Its always been this way. Always.

I like the bump a parlay can give. I don't see it as an option for my app. Where does one do it?
If you listen to anyone who tells you to bet parlays, you might as well just light your money on fire.

Parlays are for casual bettors who like to lose their money in dramatic fashion. Parlays are a suckers bet.

If you're honestly trying to make a return, do your research. Set aside a specific amount strictly as your betting bank roll. Only bet around 5% of your bank roll on games.

Never place bets to “make up” for bets you’ve lost.

I started doing this seriously two years ago. Started with 1k bank roll. Year 1 I was +250 at the end of the season, a 25% return. Year 2 I was +400 at the end of the season, a 40% return.

So I started this season with a bank roll of $1,650 and my goal is to end the season +500.

May not seem like a lot but you’re not going to get those type of returns anywhere else.

Again if you’re betting purely for entertainment, bet small, because you’re going to lose your money in the long run.

Had a really good weekend. Went 9-3-1. This included the fumble recovery in the end zone at the end of the game by Standord that covered the spread. Really lucked out on that one.

Really enjoying the over/under bets.

One of my losses and the tie were due to the Oklahoma and Texas coaches not downing the ball to run out the clock. This just illustrates the importance of factoring certain coaches into your decisions.
