NWS Layoffs Happening Now

Additional Info: Context: Despite Musk's request, U.S. law requires that air traffic controllers retire by "the last day of the month" in which they turn 56. The Transportation secretary can exempt controllers "having exceptional skills and experience" from automatic separation — but only until that person is 61
How can we get this applied to Congress?!?

I witnessed 2 tornadoes in Iowa City, one in my hometown. Doesn't take much to see a tornado in Iowa
I’ve seen 4 or 5. My house got grazed by one in the Chicago burbs last February. FEBRUARY…in Chicago. Insurance paid over $100K on the damage. I can’t imagine what will happen when the sirens don’t go off or go off too late,

The question is whether or not it takes 1800 of them to do that job.
The question is whether or not we should believe DOGE made a well informed decision that says everything we do well now could be maintained at said quality minus 1800 staff.

I've been given little to no reason to believe this is the case.

Furthermore... their defacto theory of decision making is 'move fast and break stuff' . . . which is a really bad idea in some sectors of work.

Given their track record and the limited time they have had to review NWS…I think we already know the answer.

Born in Babylona; moved to Arizona.

Good thing severe weather never impacts Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Florida, etc.

There’s nothing dumber than a 3rd-4th generation Floridan. Figuring that out quickly. Same with Okies and Texans.

That's weird. I saw my first one (it was actually 2 in the same day) when I lived in Arizona in the 90's. Hadn't even moved up to Iowa yet. I've seen 3 or 4 since living in Iowa.
I’ve seen about 20. Finally got a video a few years ago

Reed Trimmer is an idiot

You seem a little overwhelmed with fear, anger and anxiety.
At least I didn't double post like you LOL. It shows when you want to disregard warnings like Tornado or Hurricanes, or wearing a seatbelt, or not getting vaccines, you are taking a risk. You can play russian roulette. I would rather not. And for Musk to increase my risk seems far from right way to do this. I am not overwhelmed by fear, anger or anxiety. I am rationally discussing this topic. That you can't have a rational discussion seems to be the issue here.

You need economic activity for Govt jobs
Right on, when i got out of the service the job market was down and many vets were taking civil service exams and finding jobs. I was offered a job at Warner Robbins in GA, turned it down, after taking the exam, as i had a UNION machinist job waiting.

You need economic activity in order to employ people to service our sewer/sanitary systems? And if we don't have professionals forecasting hurricanes/other natural disasters, economic activity is going to be negatively impacted on a much larger scale.

I rarely bet against tech.

AI would know every recorded weather pattern in recorded history with every single input in recorded history.

When it comes to AI I don’t think weather is Everest.

I don't think the historical inputs are there but I'll be happy to be wrong.........my guess is that we'll get the businessman sale of I got you an 85% solution for 10% of the costs, so it's a success

I think you missed the point. The way it is supposed to work is the private sector creates govt revenue. Gov spend can create short term adjustments but not long term. If private sector sector doesn’t create jobs the we are nothing

Sort of like a joke. 10 bosses and supervisors are standing around watching Joe digging a hole. The accounting boss reading a financial report says…. Well it looks like we are going to have to lay off Joe

Correct as to the latter point, not to mention the microclimates in certain areas aren't handled well by models or inputs. This is where trained meteorologists blend the art and the science (many mountainous areas for example).

I don’t think a hurricane is going to sneak up on the coast.

Elon Musk said in the Trump cabinet meeting yesterday that America would go "bankrupt" if all these cuts weren't made.

I'm not sure if that's true. I doubt it.
It is, and it might anyway. Simple math, you can't spend more than you make forever, and if your debt payments can't cover the interest from the loans, you're screwed unless a creditor will refinance the debt...

Europe’s AI is 20% better than conventional methods.

No lt surprising. AI is made for data analysis. Which is all weather is. Unless you think uncle Ed’s arthritis acting up is the secret sauce.

I didn't miss the point at all. Of course in a literal sense if we have zero economic activity and zero dollars in circulation we can't hire people to do government jobs (or anything really) in that extreme example. The other side of that extreme scenario is the government receives revenue through taxing things like real property, and with that revenue it hires people to hold jobs like the sewer/sanitary workers and then you have a self-sustaining system.

The Euro model performs well in certain scenarios, not so much in others. Same for the North American models and the others.

Currently, humans look at all these models and try to predict which one will be on target.

Again, I wager that better AI will be better at doing this than the humans, except for hyperlocal forecasts (in that case, the humans know the neighborhoods where forecasted weather conditions are likely to have the greatest impacts).
