Observations from the game

Sorry, I stopped reading at "Start Kriener in place of Nunge". Good God.
Kriener was one of the few bright spots I thought. I thought he played tough at the beginning and was the only one doing so. Nunge hasn’t looked great but hopefully that changes. It’s only been a couple games, lots can change.

I had two major concerns about this year's team. First, I was concerned about Iowa's lack of athleticism, especially in the guard court. Outside of Touisant, its a big problem. Second, I was concerned about rebounding. Although Iowa easily won their exhibition game, the leading rebounder was the shortest player on the roster. I have a bad feeling about this season.

Iowa is a bad team and is going to get blown out a lot this year, so be prepared. Key to beating Iowa in hoops is as simple as the key to beating Iowa in football. Double Garza and run out on shooters and make them put it on the floor. Simply nobody capable of doing anything off the bounce. Dribble into traffic, pick up their dribble, get swarmed and make passes that would get you benched in junior high. Defense showed 0 improvement and I would say regression.

Lineup thoughts:

Red shirt Bohannon and Patrick. Start Kriener in place of Nunge to give Garza some help on the glass. I think Nunge starting ended tonight based on his play and quick hook twice. Joe and Evelyn need more PT. Slide Connor's PG minutes to these guys and use Connor at the 1-3 based on the match-up. He cannot guard the 1 and can't drive. His shot has looked better and I think he would be more effective off the ball. Fredrick is a scorer and needs more touches. Maybe even try him at PG to see if he can score or create off the bounce. Pemsl and Nunge can spell Kriener and Garza.

No lineup adjustments are going to mask the athletic deficiencies of this team. DePaul was more athletic at every position on the floor and Iowa did what Iowa does against ball pressure--turn it over and look completely lost offensively. This team will be lucky to win more than 12 games this year and lots of games will be over at halftime like tonight's was. Whatever optimism I had went up in smoke tonight with this woodshed beating.

Some good points.
Patrick doesn't need a redshirt. He needs to open up a ship for a real player. If his last name didn't start with Mc he'd be at UNI if lucky.
Redshirt JB after ISU. More mins for Fredrick, Evelyn and Joe T.
Conner has a chance to help - good vision, length, and can handle for his size. As many have mentioned his shot and driving ability is below average for a pg in most good conferences.
Thank god for Garza. Keep working Luka!!

Sigh, I sometimes wonder what goes through peoples heads when watching a game. Patrick definitely belongs on the floor but its painfully obvious he does need to redshirt, in fact he reminds me a lot of what Baer was like as a freshman.

I agree that JB needs to be RS, he is definitely not 100% and most likely wont be until late February at the earliest. I really like Fredrick's game, he is the most complete guard that Fran has had at Iowa in a long time. I love Toussaint's fearlessness and athleticism but he is going to take his lumps this year and I think it will be perfect to have him come off the bench.

Nunge is playing like complete trash right now, completely out of sync and just is not playing like he should be. Bench him so he can hopefully ease himself into the games and figure out how he can contribute to the team and have Pemsl start.

Evelyn is even worse than Nunge, he is playing very passive and thinking way, way too much. So far a huge disappointment, I expected him to struggle in the season at first but I at least expected him to come out and play aggressively. I am not even sure he has done anything beyond turning the ball over a few times.

Garza is more polished than last year and his hard work in improving himself is evident to see but those polished offensive moves of his only work if he is isolated on the block with a one on one. He just can't seem to stop himself from trying to use his moves in a 3 or even 4 on 1 setting. Garza needs to develop an awareness on passing the ball out of the block when the double/triple/quadruple team comes, so far he hasn't figured out on how to make the defense pay for doing that.

I was wrong on Ogundele, thank god. Now we got a commit that other power 5s wanted. Not a lot of them but some.

Take it from someone who knows, perimiter defense is hugely improved from last year.

CJ and Joe T are big improvement over JBO and Moss. JW and Evelyn are solid and Connor isn't bad.

DePaul hitting long stand still and off the dribble contested shots doesn't mean anything.

The only easy buckets DePaul was getting the first half of that game was off Iowas turnovers.

If every team we face will settle for those long shots with a defender in front of them that's a great thing for Iowa.
