*****Nebraska vs Iowa Game Thread*****

Looking at the stats 17 out of 35 from the 3pt line will win you most games.

Brock Harding rough game 1 for 8 from Field and 6 turnovers. We need Threlwell back . Getting Koch back and Traore healthy and maybe something good can happen.
Harding played one of the worst games I have seen from an Iowa player in a long time. It's like he was back in middle school continually chasing balls on defense. Horrible passing. Worse decisions. Just brutal. If Thelwell is in there Iowa wins going away tonight. If he's out for long the team is in real trouble.

I was so disgusted after a few minutes of the second half that I stopped watching. Dix was the only player doing anything. Thelwell hurt. Payton looked like he would be lucky to make a shot. Freeman has forgotten how to post up. Harding was playing mouse in the house defense. I thought Debbie would win by 20+. I feel like an idiot, but very pleasantly surprised. Amazed.

Payton is all or nothing. Dix should be first team all B1G. Not sure what is going on with Freeman. He is the center and he needs to play like one (on both ends). Harding has been sloppy. I sure hope Thelwell had a minor injury and will be back soon. Incredible we could win without him.

Anyone else notice Ullis got 1/2 the minutes of little Hoiberg and zero points. Not quite a good transfer decision.

Dix stat line. 31 pts on 10/14, 7/10 from 3, 4/4 FTs, 6 boards, 4 steals, 1 block. Best defender on the court.

Had a turnover, so I guess he can still improve:)
I guess that's pretty good if you like super gaudy statistics. He is just playing at an incredibly high level right now. He and Thelwell are easily the best guard tandem that Fran has ever had.

At home, with a bunch of shooters, it was unlikely come back but not impossible. Now if you had quit watching at half of Wisconsin game, then that was the correct decision.

Dix is really good but Nebraska had really good player in Brice Williams. To my eye, Nebraska is not a very talented team, but they do have size and can rebound/defend, so Fred has put together a more well rounded roster than what Fran has put together. Hoiberg is able to put together a good defense/better record team with a kind of stiff 7'0 center---I think Iowa would be better served if Mulvey was incorporated into the lineups so we could matchup vs some of these teams that have 7ft centers. Freeman is too foul prone to count on without a backup.

We all know that Payton Sandfort is capable of going off from 3pt line...its been a long wait this season to see him go off vs quality competition. I never doubted his effort, but he has to play smart and take better shots and bottomline make his 3's when they are open.

Decent athlete, almost zero skills on offense. Papa needs to do a DNA test on Ahron because the older Bro was a stud and Ahron is a dud.

Someone needs to sit Brock Harding down and tell him that he needs to transform himself into a Bohannon like player. He is an undersized guard driving into trees, driving into traffic, taking low pct shots, losing the ball. The fancy handles and layup package from high school doesn't work so well now. Joe Touissant tried to do the same crap with more athletic talent and failed. Start practicing threes for hours. Shoot them standing still. Shoot them while moving. Become a shooter.

Yeah, Toussaint was benched and ran out of town for the same crap. Yet Brock starts and logs 30 minutes a game (even when Thelwell is healthy). White privilege? 🤔

Yeah, I don't think anyone believes this is anything other than typical Fran stuff anymore.

When you put all the eggs in the jump shooting basket you get games like the last two. Up and down.

It's fun to watch when it works but it's not going anywhere in long run.
I was only able to catch the very end and obviously a nice win - but wow, we sure seemed to be having troubles breaking their press in what little I saw. If we play an athletic guard team in the Dance (think Oregon a few years ago) we will absolutely get throttled….😬

Harding has a bad habit of dribbling without purpose. He get's into the lane just below the elbow and picks up his dribble with no one to pass to. Part of this is on his teammates for not getting open, but a pg needs to know better. And he cannot finish at the rim over bigger defenders.

He was shooting a good percentage until the last few games and he's still shooting 39% from 3 for the year. He will always be at a disadvantage defensively because of his size but he has much better quickness than Bohannon ever had.

With all of that said, he was really terrible last night. No idea what he was thinking, but it looked like he'd never been coached and when your point guard plays like that it has a ripple effect on the entire team. I have to believe that had Thelwell been available that Harding would have played limited minutes.

So Thelwell injured and we have Kingsbury playing now.

Yep, definitely didn't need to add more guards. Three on a roster is plenty.
The roster is a typically unbalanced Fran roster. With that said, Dix and Thelwell are easily the best set of guards that Fran has had. I wouldn't trade either one of them for any other guard that has played under Fran.

How am I racist. He ran off Clemons and Perkins. He played his kids over Murrays. I'm racist?
C'mon Jimmy. It's not always about color. This is Iowa. Fran is hardly the only coach to favor his progeny over others that were more talented or capable.

I guess Payton was overdue to explode on offense, after the start he has had.

I have been disappointed in Freeman so far this year. He seems to be very slow and out of position on both ends a lot. Feeding Owen in the post should be Iowa's first option, but it needs to start with him getting some position or catching it on the move heading to the basket. Harding's connections with Owen seemed better in Harding's minutes last year. Thelwell and Dix can also feed him. It is not only a high percentage shot, it can open up shots for all of our perimeter guys. I think it is the missing piece to making the offense exceptional.

Defense just needs to get better. Dix and Thelwell are both really good defenders. Harding is ok, unless the opponent can get him near the basket. Then, it is mouse in the house... Payton or Pryce just can't stay in front of anyone with any driving ability, so they need to make up for that deficiency by shooting well and rebounding. Freeman and the 4s are where we need the most improvement defensively, beyond just learning to play TEAM DEFENSE.

Does Harding sometimes get stuck on his drives because he expects another player, usually Freeman, to be rolling to the basket?

I agree but that has nothing to do with the depth problem.
