Oct 31, 2022: Fran brings up putting Students behind the Benches (Beth wants students around the court). Future Renovation of Carver-Hawkeye Arena?

Yep. I remember Carver in the 80s and 90s. Place was rocking. Maybe Carver isn't as conducive to noise as the old fieldhouse (never had the chance to go to a game there) but IMO it is not a CHA problem, but a fanbase problem. I believe that firmly.

I think people are still watching; I just don't know how you get butts in the seats, especially during the week when it's much easier to watch from home

How can we find how many tickets were scanned?

With the B1G season starting tonight, attendance hopefully improves.

Hopefully both the announced attendance and scanned tickets (actual butts in the seats) are good numbers.

How full do you guys think CHA will be for the B1G home opener tonight?

Will the students finally show up?

Judging by the seats still available on the ticketing website, there won't be 8500 tickets sold. So actual attendance probably 7000

Meanwhile, at Penn State:

It’s weirdly a reverse sort of home court advantage for penn state with the bad crowds. Like playing in a library. They’ve just never had great basketball support there.
I don't doubt your numbers but watching on TV it seemed like it was more than that.

Maybe folks were putting their coats on empty seats ? :)

My parents went, I’ll have to ask them their guesstimates. On peacock it sounded like a good crowd at least. There weren’t entire empty rows visible from the broadcast at least.

ask them, too, the problems they saw (parking, etc) and what could could be done to make the game experience better and ultimately help attendance.

The fact that this had to come down to this last shot was a shame and really could have hurt the continued disinterest of going to games. Gotta make your free throws. Harding missing that late one was especially frustrating.

hopefully people saw the shot and thought, "damn, that looks like fun!"

;)

Anybody know if Beth was there? Wonder what the plans are to get students back and attendance up. Pretty bad shape.

To be fair, Brock only had ONE FT attempt (and he missed it).

Owen, for sure, has to get better at the charity stripe (he was 1-4).

When you break the Team FT shooting down:

5-5 (100%) Payton & Dix
2-3 (67%) Pryce
4-11 (36%) Owen, Brock, Even, Drew
.................................................
11-19 (58%) TOTAL

Crazy that you posted this on Nov 6, 2022 and over 2 years later we are still discussing what can be done to improve student and overall attendance.

What ideas do you think would work AND actually markedly improve attendance?

A renovation is supposed to come....but when is the question.
In the short-term, winning is the main solution. Long-term that obviously depends on fundraising as much as anything else.

Personally I’d rather go even longterm and fundraise/plan for a new facility. Just doesn’t seem like there’s much more that can be done from a renovations standpoint that would be cheaper than a new facility imo.

my 2 cents...
if basketball found a way to better officiate the game... interest would rise.

right now basketball has an officiating problem.
It's a big problem

It’s been a problem for years. No offense, but I don’t think fans are skipping games because of officiating.

always hated that, where fans would make their way to the top to watch the end
I could understand it in a blowout, but that was a close game.

That’s where I hate the design of carver btw - if you’re close to the court, that is a LONG climb back up. Never understood that part of the original design.

Didn't Lute want to make it like the Pit?

From a Google search: The Pit opened in 1966 as the University of New Mexico's arena and gained the nickname "The Pit" due to its innovative subterranean design, with its playing floor 37 feet below street level.

It's too bad they didn't realize the value of concourses & luxury suites

I have no idea, I was like -3 years old at the time 😁 What I’ve read was that they envisioned carver to be a multi-purpose venue, holding concerts and such in addition to sports. And when it was built, wasn’t it considered one of the best venues in the country?

I’ve only twice been in carver for non-sports functions: graduation and when bill Clinton delivered a speech as an ex-president. The facility itself remains FINE, but its design, at its core a giant hole in the ground, means that any major renovations are going to be VERY expensive and I have a hard time understanding what they can do with it as is.

Take that with a giant grain of salt, im no engineer or architect so lord only knows what’s possible with a good design.

I do think it was considered at the time to be a great venue (and a great design) because, among other things, there were no obstructed seats. Another reason for the underground design was to enable the place to get really loud (and it does when the fans make noise).

But like you said, it's hard to now put in luxury suites unless they are at the top (and you might have to take some rows out at the top). I doubt they can now have a midlevel concourse, but who knows.

Any way, you'd think that plans would be in the works and donors would be brought in to look at those plans.

Some want a new arena; I don't think that's happening anytime soon.

If it was a private, off the record conversation, I’d love to know if that’s something Iowa would prefer, but know there’s simply no appetite for it currently.

The wrestling team now has a tunnel to Carver so that's their home

The women's basketball team loves Carver

I don't know what the answers are for the men's basketball team. If it were easy, Beth would have it figured out by now & would be implementing those ideas. And for getting students to the games, free tickets, free food, better transportation....it's all been discussed.

I was there and attendance was pathetic for a Big Ten opener. Probably 7k tops. People who were there were loud like always though.

It’s Lickliter bad. I think most are tired of where the program is at the moment and there isn’t much hope of it getting any better without change at the top. My two cents.

Fair points.

Fran plays a fun, up and down game; Iowa fans have loved that style since at least 1970. The defense seems to be better this year. They gotta figure out how to maintain 17 point leads, though.

And the Sweet 16 drought sure as hell doesn't help matters.

IF Iowa can continue this good start - win 2/3 vs ISU, Michigan and Utah over the next couple weeks, hopefully we’ll start to see an uptick in attendance as we get into the full conference schedule in the new year.

winning definitely helps

after the holidays are over (after Jan 1) you'd think/hope attendance would pick up

The original plan for Hawkeye Arena was for that location and with a mid level concourse. The initial plan didn’t call for a donors name on it either. Fundraising didn’t go as well as hoped and the mid level concourse went and the Carver name was added.

Cid, you posted this in this thread on PAGE 2 on Nov 6, 2022. Any story link to your claims?

@EagleHawk & @Ladell-hawk , do you have any new ideas that have not already been discussed?
