For those of you who watched OSU beat wisky yesterday you may have noticed they used a jet sweep/counter sweep to a WR several times for big gains. If the WR was going right to left across the formation, and he was running behind the qb in shotgun, the coaches had 2 more receivers in tight just to the left of the left tackle. At the snap the QB would fake the zone run, pivot and hand off to the WR running at near full speed while the receivers to the left blocked down on the DEnd and a lbkr and the OTackle and a TEnd would pull to the left. All of this blocking left the WR with the ball running wide with plenty of blockers. This play worked really well as I said maybe 4 times.

But later in the game at critical time, maybe a third and long, OSU faked this run action and snuck a couple of receivers out for a nice gain. It was a great example of using a play repeatedly to give a look later in the game when a different action could fool the defense.

It is the kind of stuff the hawks have not been doing much at all this year and most of the last two. KOK had his waggle, naked boot action that most times was a handoff to a running back going one direction but when needed the qb would keep the ball for a run pass option the other direction. You all have seen that play a lot, even with Greg Davis and Brian.

We need a new play to work some options out of. Maybe two running backs on each side of the qb, fake to one to hold the defense while the other sprints out wide for a quick pass. And then on occasion the running backs can run a wheel route or cut over the middle.

Any other recent examples you have seen of OCoords setting up big plays off of other plays?

Kirk considers those exotic or trick plays. None of that nonsense in HIS offense!

Not going to happen with Ferentz. Iowa will continue to run between the tackles and pass to tight ends as long Ferentz is at Iowa. He considers creativity and deception to be illegal/foolishness, just like a mobile QB.

Its sad to watch other coaches scheme and set things up. I feel like we barely use any kind of motion this year. Hell I don't even think we do bunch WR sets.

If Kirk hangs it up this year I think all of us will look back on these last 4/5 years and be depressed, angry, or sad. The level the D and ST play at yearly combined with a competent offense probably give us 1-2 more West Championships and maybe 1 Playoff appearance.

On those Nebraska plays, I honestly don't know if we can complete that even if there is no defense on the field.

Too be fair, in order to run plays early in a game to set up misdirections later on in the game you have to be able to run enough plays to have the chance to set them up. However, since Iowa goes 3 and out on pretty much every drive they just never get a chance to do anything like that. Of course, the main reason they can't get a first down, ever, is because they can't execute even the simplest of plays so why in God's name would they be able to execute a more complicated play later on?
