***Official Caitlin/Fever/Kate/Meg Games Mega Thread***

Bueckers is the clear choice for the Fever. As stated above we’ve been starting Wallace for most of the season and now Samuelson. Now while Bueckers will definitely need to get way stronger in my opinion and hopefully stay injury free but she gives them that option of another big time scorer which they desperately need. Smith was the number 2 overall pick. She’s not going to be willing to go to the bench. But either she diversifies her game or she’s going to get traded. They’re just such an oddly constructed team. This roster has a long way to go to be a real contender.
Smith has skills to be sure, but Sides needs to introduce her to the 'inside-out' concept. Once she gets the ball near the lane she's shooting, and that's final. Every game there's an opportunity or two for her to kick it back out to CC or another player for an open 3, but not happening. She's a liability late in games with her FT % as well.

CC REALLY does need to wear those knee pads. Those knees are taking a beating and its going to cause her problems down the road...

The rumor was that the league wanted to front-load the Fever’s schedule to get people hooked on watching Caitlin on TV right away. I don’t know how true.
If that were the case then they surely would have matched them up against shitty teams. Instead, they have them mostly top tier teams.

I am having mixed thoughts on the schedule. One on hand, they front loaded the schedule so heavily, that it really put the Fever in a bad spot to start the season. On the other hand, they might have been best served by getting their asses handed to them out of the chute by the best teams, rather than skating by middling to bad teams, and not having to make the necessary adjustments early in the season. Either way though, it should not have been 11 games in 20 days. That was ludicrous.

There were a couple of narratives to choose from:
- fever are going to suck, so it doesn't matter. (Matches rumor that the schedule was fixed before draft pick was made)
- Set up a lot of early losses against wnba stars so that its obvious how great Sabrina/AT/Aja are. Then fans will switch from Clark to them. (or just go away)
- Expectation that there is a narrow window where people following Clark will pay attention anyway, so get the ratings while you can.
- Set up early tests so Clark/Fever can come on strong to make a playoff run at the end of they year and build drama.
- Just plain incompetence with the schedulers.

Feel free to mix and match, it can be more than one thing. pretty much everything I have seen is that the wnba did not really understand the Caitlin Clark affect, and also does not really understand effective marketing.

While you make excellent points, from what I have gathered, the W is too incompetent for points 1, 2, and 4. I could see points 3 and 5 being what happened. They wanted to grab viewers while they could, but they were too incompetent to schedule the games effectively.

I just mean if the league purposely front loaded the Fever schedule, they would have done so to get viewers hooked on watching. Viewers don't like watching their team get piss pounded so they certainly would have scheduled bad teams to pad the Fever record and make them look good.

But, this league is so dumb that who knows the reason.

ESPN has really gone down the tubes. These takes are annoying, for sure, but at the same time it is kinda fascinating watching all of these Black female "experts/analysts" doing nonstop mental gymnastics to make their case that Angel should be Rookie of the Year. At least we all know what is driving their thoughts.
Here’s the problem, Caitlin is playing chess while the rest of the league is and has always played checkers. The “experts” only understand checkers, so that’s what they lean toward. Women’s basketball has always been feed the ball into the bigs constantly, so that’s all they understand. Caitlin is changing the game and they don’t understand it. And that includes people like Geno A….he helped create that style of women’s basketball and he doesn’t understand anything else.

They understand. They're just being willfully ignorant for different reasons. (race loyalty and team loyalty respectively.)

Guards in the W don’t win awards because they don’t value guard play. It’s all about the bigs, so they don’t understand Clark’s value.

When I first read this I thought nah, that can't be true so I looked at past MVP's. Sure enough, the last pure "guard" to win the W MVP was Diana Taurasi in 2009. The only one before that was Cynthia Cooper in 1997-1998. A few more MVPs were listed as guard/forward like Sheryl Swoopes, but the award has been dominated by forwards and centers. I don't know enough about the wnba to say whether those position listings are accurate. I always assumed that at 6'0" Maya Moore was a point guard, but she won it and is listed as a forward.

Centers and forwards have always been the highest valued positions in the W. They play a half court game and dump it inside. They’ve never seen a player that plays like Clark. When Bueckers and Juju get there the game will continue to evolve. Pat Summit and Geno Auriemma set the play book on how to win in women’s basketball and it’s been followed ever since. Good thing Caitlin went to Iowa where she was allowed to play her style of game.

That's partially why Geno has been so salty. The game is starting to pass even him by.

On the plus side, it could end up benefitting the Fever in terms of making the playoffs, which is where the WNBA really needs the ratings help.

Generating viewership for regular season games is one thing..............but that all ultimately needs to mean something.

I watched a CC highlight last night that only featured assists. College and pro.

Whatever she does in the WNBA, it will never be better than her time with the Hawks.

The discourse over ROTY has reached astronomical levels. But judging by the comments by the media, I feel like Angel is a shoe-in while Clark is an after thought. They're obsessed with those double doubles.

I think CC is an objectively better player and elevates her team like no one else, but I just don't think they'll give her the nod. I hope I'm wrong.

I guess its all going to come own to just WHO is actually voting. Select AP writers vote for the awards I believe. Most of those chiming in are analysts for ESPN and others and most are not voters. Their job is to stir up controversy, and their doing a very good job of that.

I will grant you that the media is obsessed.

Most overrated stat in sports is now the double double in women’s basketball. 10 points and 10 rebounds is not as good as 15 points and 9 rebounds. I could see double doubles being a big thing if you put like a 20 point minimum on it, but a big scoring 10 points in a game is underachieving, not something that should be celebrated all that much. If every starter on your team scored 10 points, you would lose.

We’ll see. She’s had some pretty sick passes in only 20 or so games. But, she is being guarded like white on rice full court by the world’s best defenders so it is going to be harder to dazzle the same as going against mostly lesser players in college.

10 rebounds in a game is impressive IMO.

10 points in a game, for a big who plays three feet from the rim and is the focal point of scoring down low, is not all that impressive... 1 FG per 8-minute quarter and a couple of free throws over 40 minutes? Meh.

As the league is officiated right now the bigs are, unfortunately, the most valuable players in general.

That freaking Jones of NY just trucked KLS two times in a row, missed and went to the line both times. Reese, of course, will plow into you and make you stumble and before you can regain your footing stick her miss back in. Such beautiful ball.

Hopefully, if the league is smart, it will evolve.

How do you grow the WNBA? Have games at 11am on a Wednesday.
I'll be watching but it's sure gonna feel strange I think. Probably have to get up at halftime and do something in the garage to avoid feeling like a slug.
