***Official Caitlin/Fever/Kate/Meg Games Mega Thread***

I wonder if Sides consulted with Bluder on how to run a Caitlin Clark centric offense.
I've been thinking for a while that the games we saw Bluder at weren't just because Bluder wanted to watch Caitlin play. I'm sure that was part of it but I wouldn't be surprised for an instant if she wasn't consulting with Sides on how to run, teach, and coach the fast paced offense.

Agreed. They need to bring in a new assistant coach who specializes in defense. If they tightened up their defense they would be TOUGH to beat for any team in the league.
How many times has the idea of bringing in an assistant that specializes in defense been brought up on an Iowa basketball message board over the last 10 years?

Just read that Phoenix Mercury players Cloud and Taurisi both got called for their 7th technical fouls last Sunday.

Cloud must serve her one game suspension today. MIRACULOUSLY, the WNBA rescinded the 7th technical on Taurisi, so she's still eligible.
Just a coincidence that Mercury are in playoff hunt, so they need to ensure DT makes the post season.

Wife (no pic) and I have noticed that pretty much to a player this is how the Fever have defended all season. It seems therefore as though it must be by design. The spider household just doesn’t get it.

In theory forcing a player baseline isn't a bad defensive strategy as you add an extra defender with the out of bounds line. You just need to make sure the help defender is coming over before the ball handler gets to the paint.

Phoenix has already clinched a playoff spot.

Just for a little mathematical perspective...if CC were somehow able to maintain her current pace of having a 20p/10a performance every 4.86 games, by the time she reached 422 games played, she'd have done it 87 times. At 559 games played (unlikely, but you never know), she would have done it 115 times.

Yet somehow out of the entire universe of "grown ass women" professionals who have played in this league dating back three decades, the record currently stands at 10. These are same gals CC could only hope to be mildly competitive with due to her...you know...lack of physicality and quickness and stuff and junk.

Sides has come a long ways. She has corrected her own mistakes - probably with a gun to her head.

Still, last night I noticed how often the Fever give up the baseline on defense. Lexie does it routinely. That would take five minutes to correct in practice. Last night LA scored at least 10 points because the Fever just gave them a path to the basket for a layup or foul. Moving your body 2-3 feet toward the baseline is not hard.

She has come a long ways and corrected many of her own mistakes, but lets face it her mistakes were many. It didn't take an expert to see that early on she was playing (and even starting) players who shouldn't be. Her substitution timing often crushed momentum. She seemed determined to take the ball out of CC's hands and to turn her into a spot shooter. I don't think fans were wrong about all of that being a terrible coaching job. She has improved though, so kudos.

I still think she's questionable. The offense and defense have come around largely to simple familiarity.
I look at the blob, slob, and end of quarters more. They aren't real good here yet. Also, her use of players is very fran like. With that being said, unlike fran, she did at least replace the samuelson and wallace. Fran would have stuck to them like grim death.
So they had no Temi last night. That only leaves them 3 players to bring off the bench, Samuelson, Dantas and Wheeler. CC played all 40 minutes. Dantas is good in stretches. And she can stretch the floor and Boston has to have a blow at times. I think Sides has done fine. It's a process.

So, you are telling me that what you saw from samuelson and wallace during their time as starters was worthy of the role? Think of all the wide open 3 pointers cc has gotten for her teammates....Probably more than either of those two have had their entire career and they can't shoot. Samuelson is 30% make 35% brick and 35% airball.
It is a process but it should have been a much quicker one.

Looking to next season, what truly free agents do we think would sign on with the Fever? It's obvious that the fever are the future, and that if they can get a high end 3 or 4, she will make a ton of money with the fever just due to exposure and clicks. Unrestricted free agents for 2025 include:

Satou Sabally
Natasha Howard
Alyssa Thomas
Breanna Stewart
Nneka Ogwumike

Obviously Stewart is the best one. She realistically probably wouldn't leave NY. Maybe perhaps she would though if Caitlin agreed to play in her new 3-3 league? Hmmmm. Howard and Sabally are on the worst teams so probably would make a jump. Howard is getting older and Sabally young. She could be a good fit. Nneka is really damn good, but might be hard to lure from Seattle. Same for Thomas with the Sun. Thoughts?

Nneka and Caitlin seemed to get along well in the all-star game. If A. Thomas is on your team, much less likely to be injured by her. (Did I recently read that Thomas and Bonner are engaged? Probably staying on the same team.)

I'm not telling you that at all. I have no idea why Hull was sitting behind basically both Wallace and Samuelson earlier in the year. Both honestly should not even be on a roster in my opinion. Moving Samuelson into the starting lineup earlier I'm guessing was her hoping she could spread the floor w/CC and shoot the 3. She can't and she's not good at anything else. Did it take to long? Sure. I'll go back to them having the 2nd youngest roster in the league and 2 weeks of practice learning how to play w/CC before the season started. And of course the toughest schedule in the league. These are all facts. I think she was familiar w/Wallace and obviously thought she was better than she was. She's adjusted and her lineups over the last 6-7 games ( maybe even 10) now seem pretty well thought out.

Sabally playing on a not very good team would maybe be the best bet. Thomas and her girlfriend are on the same team. Don't see her or Stewart leaving. Sabally would be a great get.

Wheeler and Mitchell are both free agents after the season and make over $200k each.
Resigning Mitchell for max money is easy decision.
With the $200k from EW & $100k in dead cap, you can pay another max contact.
Looking to either replace Hull in starter an make her best 6th player or starter over Smith.
Sabally is only one on that list who might be “ok” as 4th option on offense.
If you could otherwise find an athletic defensive center and move Boston to the 4, be easier fit. Some rim protection behind CC & KM.

I forget about that girlfriend angle. Maybe we can trade Smith for Mabrey, so the Sun can have two couples on the same team, and then sign Sabally. That would give us a 3 and 4, with shooters everywhere.

If we need cap space I would be cool with only having 11 players on the team. If I'm a semi-marketable vet I would come for less than the max knowing I would pick up more money in endorsements while hitching my wagon to Caitlin's rocketing star.

Personally, I’d like to see them trade away Smith.

she is very frustrating. She has incredible natural athleticism but it seems hard to keep her on script. I'm still convinced that some of her worst basketball comes in the first halves of some games when she is stoned and trying to shake it off. Seems by the second half her mind is clear and plays well in those games. With that being said, if she would just emulate what Hannah Stuelke did last year, she would be a tremendous fit for Caitlin.

Smith has talent and ability, but has huge holes in her game. Doesn't seem like she can finish with her left hand, which causes her to do stupid reverse layups all of the time making them significantly harder to convert. Plays off script from the offense and looks to immediately shoot rather than look for the best shot too much. And generally sucks on defense which hurts more when you look at the starting backcourt not having a plus defender in it.

This team needs a "garbage man" role that can rebound and play defense. If that person can hit a mid range shot, run the floor on the break well, and provide some shot blocking threat then even better.

I really like Temi and she is an ideal fit as far as running the floor goes with Clark, but if she can’t stay healthy down the stretch the Fever probably shouldn’t re sign her if there’s someone else available that could fill that role. It does no good having a player on a roster that rarely is able to play. With that said, I hope she stays healthy and it all works out for her and the Fever.

I don't remember what it was, but early in the season Sabally said something nice about Caitlin when few other players were. She got some all-star votes from me even though she wasn't playing.

Thomas has two torn labrums, so you are not going to get shooting from her at this point. Layups or passes is about it. Doesn't want to get them fixed until she quits. Amazing that she is able to do what she does.
