***Official Caitlin/Fever/Kate/Meg Games Mega Thread***

Saw an article pop up this morning with a headline something like “attendance embarrassing for Angel vs. Cameron” at last night’s Sparks-Sky game. Yeah, guess who wasn’t playing in it?

So I looked up some numbers. W has played 30 non-Caitlin games this season so far. Average announced attendance 7,308. Fever have played 9 games. Average announced attendance 15,564. I realize math is hard for some athletes, but I mean, come on.

What I’d start becoming concerned about if I were a W exec (or maybe I wouldn’t since they appear to be stupid AF) is the fact that the three Indiana home announced attendances have been (sequentially) 17274, 16,013, and 15,022. Granted, these last two have been week nights. I’d be watching tomorrow’s weekend attendance (CC vs. Angel) pretty close. It better be back up near opening night or else I’d be pushing the panic button. People stop giving a fuk about CC and this league just missed its opportunity at people giving a fuk about it for a while.

More than anything they need to clean up “their” product. It’s ugly, I had no clue the officiating was that inconsistent and arbitrary.

I mean it’s bad…

On a sidetone, I think the Fever fans really love having Caitlin and now they have an enemy to get behind meaning the officials and they’re not stupid. They can see the super physical way that they’re playing CC and yet she still is doing quite well. But the rest of the league has a problem and that’s just the fact!

Some of these calls are unconscionable. I don’t remember the players involved, but near the end of the game Caitlyn threw a pass. I believe to Smith, Smith gets ran over from behind and the ball taken away and they called nothing. I mean I don’t even know how that’s possible. I’m assuming they were suggesting it was a loose ball, therefore free game, but that’s effing ridiculous.

Then they’ll call some bullshit touch foul🤷‍♂️

We were talking about this at the office. There are 6 main things going that have blown 95% of the momentum Caitlin brought with her:
  1. The team sucks from a talent perspective more than I could have imagined. Passes and would-be assists foiled by drops and missed open shots. And then just shooting in general, irrespective of anything Caitlin is doing. Just horrible.
  2. Horrible defense and questionable game management.
  3. Despite 1 and 2 above, the fever are getting every team's "A game" to show Caitlin up. So no one is sleeping on them, and they are picking up Caitlin full court, all game.
  4. Linked to 3 above, the refs are worse than the college refs. Just horribly inconsistent, and it sure seems like they are consciously or subconsciously hazing Clark. Defense like that allowed in WVU game during March Madness is the norm, while she seems to get called for tickytack fouls.
  5. Horrible scheduling for the fever at the beginning of the season cramming so many games in with no rest or time for practice, against most of the best teams in the league.
  6. The commissioner is either weak or unable to effectively communicate that they are all in it together to grow sustained interest in the W. Bad scheduling and bad reffing, and rather than trying to develop a beautiful game with freedom of movement, crisp passing, and great shooting, they have commercials celebrating how physical the W is. Awesome, you have a shitty version of the 1990s Knicks and Pistons, except with no dunking or fights.
This has resulted in a bad product on the court for the fever, and diminishing interest. There are a few of us hardcore fans who tune in, but the others in the office have lost interest or are losing interest. These are big time Iowa fans who just can't take it anymore, and will tune in once the league gets it figured out. By then, most people won't care anymore. At least, not those who were new to the W this year. Rant over.

I signed up for the pass, so I’ll likely keep watching but it’s honestly depressing. This isn’t basketball, it’s WWE Diva with a ball.

And they, or rather some of them, (players) you can honestly tell, maybe officials too?! Have a hard on for her.

They said during the broadcast she has faced the most double teams in the league. I love defense, I want to see hard nosed D, but I do not want to see people knocked to the ground routinely or grabbed coming off screens or out of pile ups. It's a bad product.

Aces bring 5'10 guard Tiffany Hayes out of retirement in an effort to make another title run

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — In their quest to claim a third consecutive WNBA title while also addressing a shorthanded lineup, the Las Vegas Aces brought former All-Star and career double-digit scorer Tiffany Hayes out of retirement Friday.

Hayes started all 40 games for the Connecticut Sun last season, averaging 12.1 points on a team that lost in the playoff semifinals to the New York Liberty. She scored 15 points in the Game 4 elimination defeat.

Although she retired after the season, Hayes found the opportunity to join the loaded Aces lineup too difficult to pass up.

“Joining the Aces will be very exciting for me,” Hayes said in a statement. “I’m just grateful that they are willing to work with me as I am diving head first into a new era in my life. It will be nice to experience the West Coast and this organization as I join them on the road to another winning season. I have no doubts that there is something special brewing, and I’m just another great ingredient being added to the mix.”

How the Aces will use the 5-foot-10 Hayes remains to be seen.

Jackie Young has played out of position at point guard because of the continued absence of Chelsea Gray, who injured her left foot in last season’s WNBA Finals. But Young has excelled so far this season at that position, entering Friday’s game at Atlanta averaging 21.8 points, 8.2 assists and 5.4 rebounds.

Hayes played her first 10 seasons for the Dream and was an All-Star in 2017 and a first-team all-league selection in 2018. She has averaged 13.6 points in her career.

“Tiffany is a fiery competitor with a winner’s mentality,” Aces general manager Natalie Williams said in a statement. “A savvy veteran who will be a great addition to our team.”

The roster spot became open after the Aces waived rookie point guard Dyaisha Fair on Sunday, leaving only Kate Martin from this year’s draft class on the current roster. Martin has scored 21 points over the past two games, making 5 of 10 3-pointers.

Las Vegas also has Elizabeth Kitley, who is sitting out this year after tearing her ACL late in the season at Virginia Tech.

I very much agree with this list. On item 4, not only are the officials very obviously not calling Clark's defenders for a lot of ridiculously obvious fouls while calling her for the slightest contact at times, this treatment is extending to other Fever players as well. Last night there were numerous times that one of Clark's teammates were hammered with no foul called, and then called for touch fouls themselves. Boston is another that gets this treatment too. It is terrible.

Kate mention at the end.

For as much focus as defenses are giving Caitlin, she is doing remarkably well. She is 13th in scoring per game in the WNBA, and 4th in assists. Amongst guards, she is 9th in rebounding and 2nd in blocks. I read a lot of hater's comments online talking about her low shooting percentage and her turnovers. Well those both correlate with the beating she is taking from defenses combined with crappy officiating. Comparing her to a star guard like Kelsey Plum (who I'm very impressed with), Plum is shooting 36% to Clark's 37.7%. Plum is shooting better 3-point FG%, while Clark is way better at rebounding, assists and blocks. The haters out there can hate based on team record, but for a rookie who is facing defensive effort like no other guard in the league, CC is doing very well.

Nailed it. “A rising tide lifts all boats” is a phrase that nobody and I mean nobody, from the top all the way down to the very bottom, in this league seems to get. Instead they seem to be incurably fixated on which is the tallest ship in the Dead Sea. Either that or they’ve completely and possibly deliberately misread the dynamic behind this rising tide right now. Spoiler alert: it ain’t Breanna Stewart. I mean, having seen her play now I openly acknowledge that she’s a great player, certainly at or at least very near the absolute top of the current women’s game. But I can also tell you I had no freaking idea who she was just a few months ago, and so naturally I didn’t really give a fook about her. And there are legions of others like me who, if you lose us in this moment, are going to go right back to not really giving a fook about her, and we won’t think twice about doing so.

Your move, W.

Plenty of Truth to this…

To add, I am in the same boat with Stewart. I had no idea what she even looked like before the first game with the Liberty. After seeing her play all of us in our house were like yep, we get it, she's awesome. But I don't care about her, I likely will never care about her, and I haven't watched a Liberty game not involving the fever. Same goes for every other player in the W except Kate Martin.

Tonight there are 3 games that tip at 6:30 pm CT that are all on ION TV.

One of those 3 games is the Aces at Atlanta; LV is an 8.5 pt favorite; O/U is 171.5

If you can't find it locally, here's another option; just make sure you have an ad blocker installed on your device.

Kate & Megan Taking on the Dream

I think kelsey plum is the stuff. she looks good, is athletic, can play hard, and mugs for the camera. she has that attitude of a teen boy in the x-games, skateboarder or bmx. style points and then mugging for the camera and jumping around. it's a blast. she will definitely be in movies or tv or something, the web... after the W. I realize not everyone can have a personality like that. caitlin with the deadpan business like approach is cool for her. everyone is different. but if you want pure entertainment, I'll take plum.

7308 is better than last year's 6614 average for the league. Gets them back to 2017 levels. CC vs Reese will draw eyes for sure...they were the two faces of the women's game this Spring.

But in the long run it's not a fun product to watch. There's a reason attendance has been dropping since the novelty wore off. Even the CC effect will begin to soften and Indiana's attendance will slip back toward normal. They'll still draw more than last year, but people aren't going to keep forking over $500 just to see CC.

This is accurate. I don't want to be Don Downer, but I have been of the belief that after two years that the W would be back almost to the level of obscurity that it was prior to CC. I didn't realize that Indiana would be such a poop-show, but that schedule could be accelerated. Watching her get beat up every game with pretty much no help is going to get very old, very fast.

Yes, I spitefully wish some over seas league offers her about 3 mill per year to leave the US and everyone goes back to skipping the WNBA.

Ill use Iowa football as my example, my biggest issue with Kirk Ferentz, leaving and/or being runoff is, know that it will be the end of an era of incredible hard nosed defense that has brought me great joy watching it.

But I readily understand many, if not most people want to see offense. I love watching CC play, but I do not enjoy this product, I do not enjoy people going to the rack, getting knocked on their heads and there not be a foul called.🤷‍♂️

I don’t enjoy hand checking and grabbing 30ft from the hoop🤷‍♂️

All the same I’ve watched sports pretty religiously since I was 8, 9 and I have never seen anything like what has happened with her in professional sports.

I’ve never seen a rookie come in a league that was totally tuned in on shutting them down. I mean, typically players come in and if over the first month or half of the season, they prove to be the real deal then the defense is adjusted. But this girl they picked her up from the baseline from the very first tip off. Grabbed her, pushed her, doubled her. It’s honestly an incredible compliment, but certainly a surprising start for her.

Now to be fair it looks like they were wise to do that because she really is the real deal, but it’s also also a little surprising at this particular moment that the WNBA isn’t watching closely and seriously contemplating what they really want…

A rugby match or a women’s basketball game?

@Moral , you have stayed up way past your bedtime on many occasions to provide free IT help to us posters.

You deserve to be paid for your time! Can you provide your venmo account? I am sure there will be many who will show their appreciation by sending you some money! I am guessing around 1,000 will send on average $100, which means $100,000 plus coming your way.... ;)

Hmm - One woman. I know, I would continue to let her get beat up, as she says "hammered", inhibiting her skill set for a year and then come back next year to see how much yellow is on the board. Perfect marketing strategy. But, heck, what do I know. They can redeem themselves somewhat by at least putting her on the Olympic team.
