****Official Cubs 2015 Thread****

Positioning. Look where Kang is with the ball. In front of the base. Most high schoolers are coached/trained to get out of the way of the runner (jumping or moving to the side) or using the base to shield the runner. Was it a hard slide? Yes. Was it dirty? No. Look above a few posts (credit SSG T) with Kang himself sliding out of the baseline with cleats out.

Was Kang's leg/cleats up at the knees?

Looks like a late slide to me. Actually, the more I look at the picture the more it looks like intent to injure.

I get it, it helps the Cubs so you're fine with it.

Did you miss the part where he still slid into the base, unlike the other pictures that have been posted, including Kang's slide from May? Coghlin might have been barely out of the baseline, Kang, Victorino and Robinson (my earlier post you replied to) all were 5-10 feet from the base. I have a MUCH bigger problem with those slides. It's all about the intent than the result.

Yes, his right leg with cleats up goes right at the SS's leg who wisely gets it out of the way. Kang's body blocks it, so you cannot see how high on the leg it goes, but he was going for his leg with his cleats.

This is sliding into the base? Yes, he can still touch it, but let's not call that 'barely out of the baseline'.

His entire forearm covers the base. I'm not sure what you're missing here? I get that you probably are a Pirates fan and have probably just started watching baseball in these past couple years, but this is simply a baseball play. Always has been. It's funny that you claim Cub fans say it's ok because it benefits them when the only reason you are bringing this up is because a Pirates player got hurt. Slides like this happen almost every single game.

Pirates fan my entire life. I've watched baseball since I was 7. This isn't the first time Coghlan has severely injured someone on a takeout slide.

Simply a baseball play? Broken tibial, torn mcl, torn meniscus. Yeah, happens all the time.

Maybe he should drink more milk?

No, injuries rarely happen. Shortstops planting their lead leg instead of jumping to avoid the slide also rarely happen. You are going to have to refresh my memory on the other injury Coghlan was a part of.

I hate to distract from the Coghlan trial, but Castro is having himself a decent day. Two homers, 6 RBI and the Cubs are up 8-3 in the 6th.

I know he's not everyone's favorite, but I've been really impressed by his attitude and effort since Russell took his job. He's been a much better player over the last month or so and he'll be an important piece if they're going to make a run.

Castro with two bombs! This is fun :)

Side note - anyone who has played middle infield knows you get out of the way off the runner. Dirty play or not, it's part of baseball and you never take the risk.

Honest question, how did STL win so many games? Are they really hurt that bad? They have looked nothing more than average in the past 6 weeks.

They got out really fast as the injuries were piling up. I kept waiting for a collapse, but it just never really came. They're very fundamentally sound. They know how to win. They're well coached and they have a good front office. The injuries were bound to catch up to them, but they've been remarkably consistent. Early in the season, they were consistently ripping off 4-, 5-, 6-game winning streaks and kept the losing streaks to a minimum. They didn't lose 3 games in a row until late May. Their worst month was a 15-11 July (7-9 this month, so far)....but they were 15-6 in May, 19-8 in June and 19-9 in August.

Every advance metric shows they are the luckiest team in the league. No surprise they are coming into reality

I don't know, how many bones did he break?

That doesn't matter. Did he go way wide with high spikes? The fact that the guy he was trying to take out was smart eight to get out of the way has no bearing in it.

The fact is Kang hasn't injured anyone and Coghlan has severely injured 2 players. But he's REALLY sorry. Cubs fans seem pretty bothered too.

Again, Coghlin's cleats hit Kang in the ankle. His leg slid up Kang's leg after contact.

By the way, you may be ok with the slide, but his leg didn't 'slide up'. I've watched the reply multiple times. That's nonsense. He hit him exactly where he wanted to.

Lol. If you think Coghlans slide is anywhere near as bad as Kangs that is posted above, you are just being pathetic. One guy doesn't even try touching the bag. The other grabs it with his forearm. You are high!

We saw the same thing with the A's last year, where they incredibly lucky until that final month or so. The Cardinals are a better team than the A's were last season. They are a very good baseball team. Their pitching is excellent. However, they have been very lucky and have won more games than they should have based on the metrics.

It's part of the game, deal with it. As a middle infielder you take on the risk. You either get the hell out of the way or assume the risk of getting wrecked. Until they enforce some sort of silly rule, it's just the way the game is played.

Kang's cleats stuck in the dirt. If he had jumped, no injury.

That's just it, you weigh the risk/reward when trying to turn a double play like that. You plant and throw or leave your feet and throw. It's unfortunate that someone gets hurt in that manner, it really sucks. But every middle infielder understands that risk. It's a part of baseball, much like standing in front of the plate as a catcher was before the Posey rule.

This is probably a repercussion from the installing of replay. Before replay you could "national league" it, as in you pull your foot and slide off before you actually catch the ball and it was still an out. Now, a player has to make sure he's firmly planted on the bag before catching and releasing the ball to ensure the out, which leads to taking some more hits at 2nd base while trying to turn a double play.

Honestly though, that gif posted above is way more egregious than Coghlans slide into 2nd. At least Coghlan was trying to beat the throw in an attempt to be safe. Kang went way beyond the borders of the baseline to run into another player. His intention of running out of the baseline and sliding into another player to break up the double play was exactly the same as Coghlans, it just so happens that in this instance it ended up in another player being injured.

Both plays are identical in their intention, circumstance dictated the outcome. To claim that this is some sort of intentional dirty play is horribly dishonest and a product of homer mentality.

Some of you are trolling, or not very good at baseball. The reason Kang was injured is because of a slowly hit ball to the right side of the infield, which resulted in the fielder using precious time to rotate his body and throw without much strength behind him. Kang had to wait on the ball which came in well in front of the bag. I am not saying it was his fault. Perhaps a more experienced player sets up differently, or realizes the double play isn't going to happen and only tries to secure the force play at second.

Great win today. I am glad Maddon called out Matheny. He's from the LaRussa school of managing like a bum. The Cardinals have thrown at more batters than any other team in baseball since LaRussa took over.
I love Maddon calling Matheny out over managing with a copy of the unwritten rules of baseball hanging out of his back pocket.

Just a point - the Pirates did complete the double play with the throw to first.

Oh, not in response to you, but I thought I would add what Kang had to say about the play:

"It is unfortunate that what would be considered heads up baseball would cause such a serious injury. That said, Coghlan was playing the game the way it should be played. I'm confident he meant me no harm. I appreciate everyone's support."

Cubs magic number = 7 after the Giants loss last night. Here are the numbers from around the league:

Mets: 8 for the division
Cardinals: 11 for the division, 1 to clinch a playoff spot.
Pirates: 6 to clinch playoff spot, 15 to clinch top WC
Dodgers: 8 to clinch division
Blue Jays: 12 for the division, 7 to clinch a playoff spot
Yankees: 12 to clinch top wild card, 12 to clinch playoff spot
Royals: 6 to clinch division, 6 to clinch playoff spot
Rangers: 13 to clinch division, 13 to clinch playoff spot

In the NL, the Cards, Mets, Dodgers, Pirates and Cubs would be in today. Everyone but the Giants and Nationals has been mathematically eliminated from the wild card race. In the AL, nobody has been eliminated yet.

The most important signing this offseason might be extending the contract of Theo Epstein and his crew. Epstein I believe is up after next season, and will command a large salary increase. Saying that I think it's an easy signing for Tom Ricketts. Theo and the organization he's assembled are starting to make him a lot of money, and remembering back to Theo's signing I think he and guys like Jed and Jason want to be here for the Cubs making the WS.
