*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

We were a little past 3B down the line. We had a great time.

No idea about the legends selling autographs, 2 of my boys and I spent all morning wandering the back fields watching some BP, pitchers long-tossing and doing PFPs and then came back to the front of the complex where players roam about and the kids got some autographs (Alzolay, PCA, Morel, Steele, Velazquez, Mastrobuoni, Mervis, Dom Nunez). We had a great time until we wandered in for the game and then had a great time there.
In the building that sits on the berm above LF they have a nice set up where guys will hangout to BS and sign autographs. I got a Fergie Jenkins a few years back. I went all fanboy and gushed when I was talking to him about how he pitched the first game I remember at Wrigley. It was against the Astros with JR Richard opposing him and he got hammered. Out of the game early and Dave Campbell came in for him. I was just babbling and he says, “You win some and you lose some”.
Profound CSB.

That’s cool and I’ll file that away for next time. I’d never been down there before (had tix once in the last year or two of HoHoKam Park, but the game rained out about 5 min after I got inside. I went with my 19yo, who just finished his HS pitching career last spring, and my 12yo, who is in his last year of Majors in Little League, so they were more than thrilled to geek out over long toss and PFPs. We had a blast. Even when we didn’t get a chance to have guys sign or directly interact, it’s easy to forget just how BIG all those guys are. Well, except for Quiroz and Madrigal.

One cool thing is depending on where you are you bump into ex major leaguers all over the place. We have gone to a fairly average Mexican place called Frank and Lupe’s I’m Scottsdale a few times, and there are always former players there.

Next time I do this (hopefully next year), I want to stretch the trip a little. My oldest had some big projects and tests around this weekend, so could really only afford to fly out Friday night and go back Sunday. With a couple more days, we’d have a little more time to float. Also, next time I’d look to go when there will also be minor league games going on across the back fields, that would be fantastic.

Just remember that when a guy is a mess in the mound, he might be a mess or he might be working on something specific vs prioritizing making outs.

Wick? Nah, he was a mess, Bro. He’s never been able to harness his stuff.

Just speaking in general. I’ve said on here many times that I wouldn’t be surprised if Wick isn’t in Chicago (or maybe even with the Cubs) on Opening Day. Just pointing out that it’s very easy to get a bad read on spring training results either because guys are working on something or because of sample size.

Very troubling.
Anyone else remember when “an oblique”, wasn’t a thing? No it’s such a common injury.
The silver lining here is that it will open up chances for some other guys to push hard for Chicago (like Brennan Davis or possibly even Matt Mervis if they give Mancini time in the OF) and that we’re still a month from opening day. I’ve seen people commenting that “at least it’s not his throwing side”, which is true, but it is the oblique right at the front of his swing, where he generates a lot of torque, so that’s not great. Sounds like they’ll shut him down for a bit and hopefully he can get back to normal.

”Moderate” strain isn’t going to be a 3-day sit-down, but it likely won’t be catastrophic, either, as long as it doesn’t turn into a lingering situation.

Oh, good, more Mike Tauchmann in the OF, and, checks notes, Mastrousomeone, at SS.
Need to figure out who the depth OF and depth IF are. It’s not the most exciting thing to watch, but it’s not a big deal. Have to figure out how to separate McMadriBoteBuono somehow.

Tauchmann isn't depth. He's ticketed for Des Moines with a break glass only in case of emergency sign around his neck. ;)

Haha, most of these guys aren’t depth, but I don’t mind the process of confirming it.

The Cubs (and the Braves) became wildly popular because they were on TV every day for decades. Now I don't even know who's on the team.

And, I am not going to pay extra to watch baseball.
Exactly. For decades it was just flip on the TV during the summer and tune to the Cubs game. Now I barely check the box scores.

Willson fanning the flames?
