*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

The Cubs (and the Braves) became wildly popular because they were on TV every day for decades. Now I don't even know who's on the team.

And, I am not going to pay extra to watch baseball.
In fairness, if we’re mad because you have to have cable…you had to have cable to watch the Cubs and Braves in the 80s, too.

Tonight's game is moving right along. Only half an hour for 3 innings and 45 minutes through 4. I think Steele and Assad only threw about 35 pitches combined in those 4 innings.

Pitch clock is working.

Back in the day when cable meant 50 channels, tops. Monday night games on the USA Network, plus the super stations. ABC had a game of the week. Maybe a few other random games.
Baseball needs to figure out how to get their product to their fans.

Cubs pitch a no-hitter! 2:14 ballgame.
Only spring training game I have ever watched in completeness. Might have to watch some more.😉

PCA reminds me of Lenny Dykstra, with maybe some more power.

Hope I'm right.

It was a great first game of the year for me to watch. The pitch clock seemed intense for me. I liked it a lot.

Dear God they are going out of their way to give this Tauchman guy a roster spot.

Zach Britton remains unsigned, and the Cubs are one of the teams rumored to be talking to him.
Interesting.

Who gets booted from the 40-man then? I hope that neither Hendricks nor Suzuki are injured badly enough to go on the 60-day IL. Maybe Velazquez?
Hendricks might need the 60-day, but I really doubt it’ll be Velazquez. I think he’ll go to Iowa, but to clear him off the 40, he’d have to go through waivers and I don’t think there’s any chance a guy in his early 20s with his power profile clears waivers. If Bote makes the Opening Day roster, I would think McKinstry is probably gone and/or possibly Rios.

Sampson lays another egg today, with 3 HRs in 2.2 IP. I think that now makes 6 HRs in 4.2 IP.

Hopefully he is just tweaking something before he gets serious.

All of his success last year was based on location and command. He was able to out-perform his FIP, among other things. He openly talked about how he changed some of his pitches and where he threw pitches in certain situations, so there’s a chance it’s replicable - but if your success is almost fully dependent on fell, location and command, I can absolutely see that as a recipe to being a slow starter (Hendricks has had some of that, even in his best years). We’ll see.

I wouldn’t read a ton into this start, but there’s absolutely a chance that Sampson pitched into some good luck last year and may not be able to replicate what he did last year. Assad and Wesneski are definitely also pushing for that 5th rotation spot as well, so this will be interesting to watch.

This is the guy I really hope becomes a superstar. Remember when 3B was the positional black hole? We’ve had Aramis and KB since then but never more than a bandaid in center.

We get a Jerome Walton or Dexter for a year or two then it’s back to a question mark. I’d love for PCA to take and hold the job for a decade plus.

So, you hooked us with the free stuff, now that we are hooked you are putting in premium pricing?
Haha, no. The pod will stay free, just looking for a way to potentially pay hosting/subscription fees and maybe make enough to buy a beer at a game sometime.

I admit to turning away from the Iowa game a few times yesterday in frustration, and the Cubs game was entertaining. A lot of power on display from the guys you want to see doing that in the regular season.

If he is truly healthy he could be a steal. If he isn’t, then it’s a 1 year roll of the dice that didn’t work out.
I think he has a pretty high floor. He’ll give some lefty power and play a solid to very good CF.

I didn’t watch today, but I see that Wesneski was stellar for 4 innings today. It’s going to be hard to keep him off of the opening day roster.

He’s pushing HARD. 4 innings, 4 Ks, 0 hits, fewer than 50 pitches. When he’s on his game, he gets Ks but is pretty efficient about it. He has a chance to work deep into some games - and he should be well positioned to go past 150 innings this year, being north of 140 last year.
