I haven't read the article, either, but this makes sense. Another dark horse being added to the 40-man is Bailey Horn, who has been lights-out this season, although mostly at AA, and probably has more of a future with this team than the number of retreads and other lefties Iowa has with 5+ ERA's.I have to think things are going to go like this:
Cubs still have 1 open spot on the 40-man since they didn’t bring up a fill-in for Taillon today. So:
Apologies if this is a repeat of the BN link, I have not read it.
- Sampson comes up and goes to the IL from the MLB roster, which allows the Cubs to put him on the 60-day, freeing up a 40-man spot.
- Assad gets optioned to Iowa so he can go back and continue to start
- Mervis is added to one of the now 2 40-man spots and takes Assad’s active roster spot
- Rios gets optioned to Iowa
- One of the Iowa relievers (probably Kay, maybe Burdi or Sanders) gets added to the 40 and comes up to take the Rios spot.
Horn would be a bold move. I don't see Jed being this bold with the AAAA flotsam and jetsam at Des Moines to try out, before going bold.I haven't read the article, either, but this makes sense. I think Horn would be in maybe a June shuffle. Right now, whether it’s bold, weak or whatever, the I-Cubs have Nick Burdi, Anthony Kay, Vinny Nittoli and Cam Sanders who are all getting a lot of swing-and-miss. As long as he keeps throwing like this, though, we probably will see Horn at some point.Horn would be a bold move. They said the exit velocity on that single was 111 mph.🤪 He is going to be fun to watch.
Amaya has had exit velocities in excess of 100 three times in two days, but is hitless. Once Gomes comes back this taste of the majors will do him well at Des Moines. They said the exit velocity on that single was 111 mph.🤪 He is going to be fun to watch.
And, how long on this guy? Jackson Ferris was in high school last year, and got his assignment to MB, where he was amazing.Cubs are going to be amazing next year with Ohtani and Steele at the top of the rotation. Killer lefties as the anchor? Yes, please.
He looks really, really good…but he’s also still just 19. I think I see some mechanics to clean up to keep him more consistent, but damn the baseline stuff is incredible. And, how long on this guy? Jackson Ferris was in high school last year, and got his assignment to MB, where he was amazing.
Waves of talent.
So THAT'S Why the Cubs Sent Second Rounder Jackson Ferris Straight to Full-Season Ball - Bleacher Nation
Chicago Cubs pitching prospect Jackson Ferris had an overwhelming debut.www.bleachernation.com
Greatest game ever pitched by some scoring metrics they use.
I love all that he did as a Cub, but, is this the Cardinal Way he spoke of?
I’m not a Contreras hater now, but he sure burned a lot of goodwill with fans when he talked about how he longed to be a Cardinal while being in the Cub dugout. I get his chip-on-the-shoulder way of operation, but he’s spent a couple months now trolling the Cubs and Cubs fans.I love all that he did as a Cub, but, is this the Cardinal Way he spoke of?
Good Lord, how old are you? Did you see Gabby Hartnett play, too?I’m very happy with Gomes, Barnhart, Amaya and if they don’t work out, I’d gladly take any retired catcher like Jody Davis, Steve Lake, Hector Villanueva, Steve Swisher, George Mitterwald in their current state than having Contreras on the team.
I’m old, but I’ll only vouch for Davis, Lake and Villanueva. Why did you hate Joe Girardi and Rick Wilkins?Good Lord, how old are you? Did you see Gabby Hartnett play, too?
No mention at all of Randly Hundley, or even Kris Krug???I’m old, but I’ll only vouch for Davis, Lake and Villanueva. Why did you hate Joe Girardi and Rick Wilkins?
That is probably why Hundley played 160+ games a year for the Cubs when he was their #1 catcher.I saw Gene Oliver start a fight when he was a coach for the Quad City Cubs, that was very entertaining. The Cubs have had some very below average-mediocre catchers over the years, that’s for sure.
Wrona, yes. Those others were before my time. I basically started with Jody Davis. No mention at all of Randly Hundley, or even Kris Krug???
😉
Edit: How about Ken Rudolph, John Boccabella, Bill Heath, Gene Oliver????
Rick Wrona anyone?
Cubs did that with Jody and it probably took 5 years off his career. That is probably why Hundley played 160+ games a year for the Cubs when he was their #1 catcher.
I cannot imagine any catcher in today's game playing that many games. He and Bill Hands may have been one of the most lopsided trades since Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio.
No Berryhill, Servais, or Michael Barrett and his right cross?I’m old, but I’ll only vouch for Davis, Lake and Villanueva. Why did you hate Joe Girardi and Rick Wilkins?
All serviceable, no pun intended. I go back to Barry Foote and Tim Hosley. Don’t forget that they also had Todd Hundley for awhile. No Berryhill, Servais, or Michael Barrett and his right cross?
Barrett was a fighter, not a lover. He’d fight anyone anytime. Opponents, umpires, teammates. My only regret is that we never had a Barrett/Farnsworth cage match. No Berryhill, Servais, or Michael Barrett and his right cross?
