*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

He literally had an 0.53 ERA over his last 18 outings. Sure, DFA.
Awesome. Our highest paid reliever brought his ERA down from 7.58 and the league isn’t hitting .300 against him anymore after he got demoted to garbage time (I believe today was only the 4th game for him in that stretch decided by fewer than 3 runs). Maybe he should go back there.

I'm pretty sure that I heard tonight that both Swanson and Stroman are going to skip the AS game; Swanson for injury and Stroman just to regroup for the 2nd half. IMO, this sounds like these guys still believe and just want to a few days to recover from a challenging first half. Hopefully Bellinger has recovered his stroke as evidenced by his current hitting streak and his first 2 HRs since late April in the last 2 games.

Also hopefully, Ross will construct a batting order to put Bellinger and Morel in the top 3-5 spots for the time being, instead of the top 6-7 spots. Maybe I am just too old school but I remember when the Cubs top 6 hitters were almost scripted everyday with Kessinger, Beckert, Williams, Santo, Banks, and Hundley, and they seemed to know their expectations from day-to-day and performed accordingly. They didn't have to guess where they might be hitting in the order and have to adjust their approach accordingly.

The Yankees are garbage without Judge.

I hope to hell they're "sellers" at the deadline.

Today was an example of why MLB needs a challenge rule on balls and strikes. The home plate Uno was atrocious today. He rung up Morel on a ball that was low before Bellinger hit his 2 run homer.
I won't even call these guys atrocious anymore, its ridiculous to keep asking them to do something the human eye/brain just isn't capable of doing consistently. Even the best umps are gonna miss calls and those blown calls are going to determine games. It completely undermines the integrity of the game and there's no reason for it.

Eliminatung the arguing over balls and strikes would totally help pace of play and keep players and managers from getting tossed but leave it to mlb to be days late and dollars short with this like they have been with everything.

Rob Manfred is worthless, worst commish by far

Looking at the radar, it could be a LONG delay if they don't get restarted soon.

Up 6-4, middle 8th.

Hold for Fulmer with a two run lead in the 8th. DFA for sure.

And it only took 24 pitches.

Cubs likely not in pennant race this fall, and Fulmer is worthless as far as deadline trade value goes. As far as I’m concerned, his presence is only hindering the development of younger talent in the organization that could be filling his roll…for pre-arb $.

We’ll see what happens in the series after the break, especially those first 10 games with BOS, WAS and STL. They can absolutely get back into the race.

Didn't see winning 2 of 3 this weekend after losing 4 of the previous 6. Good to see.
The Yankees stink. I figured out in today’s game that McKinney is a Cubs castoff. And, it turns out we were able to survive without Torres.

Stroman and Bellinger are the top shelf items for sale. Gomes had a timely hit today, and I wonder if he nets anything of interest? I can see the Cubs dealing him in order to audition Amaya in the final 2 months of the season.

And not a recent castoff. I’m pretty sure the Cubs got him in the Addison Russell deal and then sent him to NY in the Starlin Castro deal. Pretty sure he’s made more rounds than that and the Yanks brought him back.

But as I talked about this week - what’s the point of a trade? If the Cubs trade Stroman, Gomes, Bellinger and maybe also Smyly, Hendricks, Leiter, Fulmer, Merryweather, then they got into 2024 with more holes than they can dream of filling in an offseason. If you’re going to deal Stroman or Bellinger, you have to get max value.

McKinney was sent to the Yankees in the Chapman trade.
