*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

Stroman reportedly threw 35 pain free pitches in a bullpen session at Sloan Park today. It isn’t unrealistic that he comes back, but he’s going to have to ramp up fast

I know that looks bad the way you presented it, but I actually prefer it this way. If the Cubs had to rely solely on FA acquisitions for pitching and their home grown guys were all crap, I think things would look worse long-term.
I agree that it's great that our home grown guys are developing and pitching well, but striking out on our big FA acquisitions is bad.
That's money that could've and probably should've gone elsewhere.

I'm not giving up on Stro, but Taillon and Smyly were bad signing from the beginning.

For whatever reason (and I think those reasons vary by guy - pressure to live up to contract, new coaches, maybe trying to add something new) a lot of FA pitchers struggle some or all of their first season. Cubs have seen that with Lester and Darvish before Stro and Taillon. Stro came back nails in year 2 before he got the blister, hip and rib injuries, so I think his issues are far more injury-tied than just not being a good sign. Taillon’s #1 issue is his 4-seamer having way more arm-side run than it’s ever had before and it’s running both out of the zone and into bats at higher rates than he’s ever seen before. I expect that he’ll be able to fix that in the offseason and be good next year, but that doesn’t help now.

I think it’s very clear, though that the Cubs are doing really good things with their pitching infrastructure:
  • Very good bullpens over the last 3 years with a bunch of guys picked up cheap and/or off the scrap heap (Tepera, Chafin, Robertson, Givens, Effross becoming a sidearmer, Merryweather, Leiter Jr, etc).
  • In-house starters rising to the top of the system: Steele, Assad, Wicks up now. Horton shooting through the system along with some others.
  • Lots of live arms lining up as bullpen options in the bigs.
It’s really exciting to see after all those years of not developing pitching.

Should I be impressed with Kyle Schwarber? He hits a lot of home runs but other than that he not very good.

Judging by what you tend to value, you’re not going to be. Schwarber is what he is - a lefty with massive power who gets on base a lot because he’s really picky in the strike zone. You’ll see a really crappy batting average, but he’s going to keep a pretty solid OPS most of the time because he walks a lot and keeps the OBP up.

Since he’s been playing largely full-time (2017), he’s only had one season (2020) with a wRC+ under 100. He’s been as high as 146 (46% better than the average hitter in terms of run creation) and the rest of the seasons have averaged around 120 (118 this year). Going by OPS (on-base % + slugging %), he’s only had 2 seasons in the same span under .800.

So, yes, by most useful measures of overall offensive production, you should be impressed to the point that he’s an above-average run producer. I don’t know what level you meant by “impressed”. He’s not Mookie Betts, but he’s certainly far from being some scrub.

Damn...I bet you are fun at parties.

Would to have seen your take on Cubs over the years.

Kingman...all he does is drive guys in.

Lee Smith...lucky to get a couple good innings out of him every few days.

Sandberg...only plays defense and score runs.

Gracie...all he does is hit doubles

Zambrano...all he does is get wins

Rizzo...besides getting hit by a pitch, what else can he do?

I would take every single one of those players over Schwarber. They were all great players. Zambrano could have been much better if he wasn’t a head case.

He’s very overrated. The Cubs will never win a World Series on the roster because he cares more about Justin Bieber and Korean pop music than baseball.
4 hits, Biatch!!!

I’ve forgotten more about baseball than you’ll ever know.
Is that you, StateCollegeMan?????

A xenophobe who continues to double-down on stupid. Hard to believe you're a Trump d+ck-rider.

Jed didn’t think he was good enough for the Cubs. If you and a good majority of the posters were running the Cubs you would have given Bryant, Rizzo, Baez and Schwarber the massive contracts they were looking for. The Cubs would be in last place right now with them. While I would have been rebuilding around Corey Seager, Freddie Freeman and Kevin Gausman.

Fantasy-world GM genius strikes again.

The Cubs offered Bryant, rizzo and Baez more money than they ended up getting.
