*****Official Cubs 2023 thread*****

I hope Suzuki never got into Swanson’s head. Swanson is a better ball player than this.
Since you are such great GM material, please let us know which players with long, high-paying contracts are allowed to have slumps and which ones aren't, and how you determine who is to blame. Educate us little people who only know how to just support the team.

Dansby really needed to sit that second game. He had an awful Aug at the plate, and Sept has started even worse. He's played 14 full games at SS in 13 days. Needs a reset. Not saying the Cubs would have necessarily scratched together another run or two with Mastrobuoni or Madrigal playing, but playing a full double-header at SS is a heavy load, and this dude needs a load off.

The blown save sucks but left too many runs out there.
The blown opportunity to put up a good crooked number on the board in the 1st inning comes back to bite the Cubs. Bases juiced, 1 out, and two straight strikeouts.

An unfortunately familiar refrain for the last decade or so.

We’re doomed! Lol not the least bit concerned. Playoffs minimum just like I said when we were way under .500.

That was a kick in the crotch last night.
Gotta turn it around tonight. I see that the slumping Morel is in the line up tonight at DH. Canario was brought up for what reason? Why not start your right handed power bat against a lefty?

Good question.

Runs are again very hard to come by. Nice effort by Assad to carry the load with the overused bullpen.
For those of you who don't obsessively follow rehab assignments, Hughes and Burdi have joined AAA. It would be a big boost if one of them can rejoin the Cubs this year.

Great job by Leiter. Blown saves on consecutive nights. Where was Azolay tonight?
He had to be down. He’s had 7 appearances in the last 12 days, all in the highest leverage. The issue isn’t Adbert, or even Leiter (also 7 appearances in the last 12 days, all pretty leverage). It’s that they’ve run the last 3 months on basically Adbert, Leiter, Merryweather and Fulmer in most leverage situation. They’re all gassed and hurting. Fulmer is on the IL. They have to find a way to trust Cuas and Palencia more or call up Luke Little and see what he can do. This pen is GASSED.

That’s why it was such a shame to waste 8 shutty from Assad. He came out and gave this team exactly what it needed.

Thanks! I love the information and perspective.

Truly amazing that we have $50M+ soaked into Stroman, Smyly, and Taillon and they've crashed and burned not for just weeks, but most of the season (admittedly Stroman started strong).
And now we're relying on 3 arms, who are all making the league minimum, to drag us to the playoffs.
I tip my hat to Assad, Wicks, and especially Steele.

Ross referenced Leiter's fatigue twice in his post game comments. So, WHY PITCH HIM!?
Greene is sitting there available. Cuas. Palencia. Hell, he could have run Smyly out there. Anyone but someone you know to be fatigued.

Oh look. Taillon is giving the Cubs' opponents that extra BP they missed pregame in the first inning again. It sure is nice of him to do that for them.
3 HRs in the first 2 innings????

Well between Taillon and it being a Sunday, I don't know which factor is working harder against the Cubs. One might hope they would cancel each other out.

I blame the lack of offense for the losses Fri night and Sat much more than I do our late-inning bullpen guys. Scoring only 1-2 runs against Reds pitching is rather pathetic.

He's probably getting kickbacks. Cubs are only paying him $14M. He's got a family to feed.

I know that looks bad the way you presented it, but I actually prefer it this way. If the Cubs had to rely solely on FA acquisitions for pitching and their home grown guys were all crap, I think things would look worse long-term.
