So trade Hoerner to make room for Shaw?
Or actually enjoy some actual depth and not try to play a full season on 9 guys. Would be pretty trivial to get Shaw 2-4 starts every week, even in a backup role:

OF day off: Seiya to OF, Shaw to DH
Nico day off: Shaw to 2B
Bregman day off: Shaw to 3B
Dansby day off: Nico to SS, Shaw to 2B

Lots of ways to make this work. Cubs have to get guys like Nico and Dansby more days off anyway. Then Shaw’s play can dictate what’s next. Maybe Nico goes in an in-season trade, but I don’t think the Cubs have to sprint to get rid of him.

I mentioned this a few days ago. The Dodgers are so talented they are letting useful bullpen guys go.
My guess is the Dodgers want to look at the Cubs in ST and select a player from the marginal prospect bucket. It also will be interesting to see if the Dodgers paid any of his salary.
I’ve heard the Dodgers did pick up some of the money, but haven’t seen any official report with an amount yet.

Boys, on DraftKings i picked the 6 division winners for 10 bucks. If I hit, it pays 2110. Guess my picks

For those of you interested in the minor league system, Josh Timmers over at Bleed Cubbie Blue is doing his annual top 25 prospects review. If you haven't gone to that site, it's good. Al is a bit of an odd fellow, but he is passionate and has an encyclopedic knowledge of the Cubs. He's written several books about the Cubs, and is always available to talk to if you see him at Sloan Park or Wrigley. Josh does nightly recaps of the farm system during the season and watches as much content as possible.
His work is highly detailed. He only ranks players who have made it to the US because he relies on what he has seen in game action.
Here is 11-15.

All the reports today about Bregman still not wanting a short deal and looking for 6-7 years has to be the last Boras mouthpiece push to get a team to jump their offer. My guess is that it won’t work unless Bregman wants to go to maybe Detroit or Toronto, which it doesn’t seem he wants to do.

Yeah, he's being very vocal about it. I assume it's a short deal, or his client goes someplace he doesn't want to go. And, I'm not actually sold on the Tigers or Jays really offering up 6-7 years. The Tigers have the bigger need, and 3B is open, but they are also lugging around Javy's bad contract.

I am not a Jed apologist, but if you look at the pitching staff going into ST Counsell has a lot more viable arms to work with this year. He's got a lot of depth and flexibility.

With the exception of not aiming for any clear TOR starter, I think Jed has done a really good job building both starter and bullpen depth. They also have a lot of guys with pretty significant potential upside. I’m excited to see what this staff can be.

I figured Bregman would cave and accept 4/100MM. I guess that isn't happening. Disappointed.

He’s probably going back to the Astros for the money they offered 2 months ago. And, roster wise they have choices to make if he returns since they added Paredes who can’t play anywhere but 3rd competently.

That question hasn't been answered yet. If he had a 6-yr deal he liked, he's take it. This is a lot of Boras posturing.
If Boras is saying he has a 4/$100mill deal somewhere, I wouldn't really put much stock in it. I wonder how many Boras clients are tired of his schtick anymore.

Good question. There’s been a lot of chatter about the Cubs being in for 4/$100-120M, but we’ll see. I’m definitely willing to put the number of owners and POBOs tired of his schtick at 60.

From rotoworld. Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 in Houston reports that the Astros have increased their initial offer to free agent third baseman Alex Bregman.
The longstanding offer that the Astros had on the table was believed to be for six years and $156 million,.

If he 6 156 has really been available he is crazy for not signing. Again I want no part of Bregman.

I’m assuming that deal was on the table at one point and then rejected, so I’m not sure it’s still on the table. If it is, that’s 6 years at AAV of $26M. If he’s not taking that, he’s definitely looking for $28-30M, which would be 6/$168-180M.

I do have to wonder at some point if the upper-mid Boras clients start taking some deals a little earlier. The truly elite guys will always get paid, as will the guys who hit FA before age 29, but it’s that next tier of good/very good players that maybe some injury history, a touch of age, maybe a down year mixed in that seem to get crushed lately.

Houston is still my bet. When all is said and done.

My guess is there is enough deferred money it’s closer to 150 million. Which is still insane. Honestly think that’s what he’s worth. Somewhere between 125 to 160 ish.

The brewers seem to be standing pat. Maybe see if one of the infield prospects is close. Cooper Pratt SS or Mike Boeve 3B.
Can’t blame them Moncada at 5 million meh. Same with Polanco or DEJong.

Feeling a Bellinger esque deal coming for Bregman. Boros gets paid for overplaying his hand again

Here is the write up in BCB on the top 5 prospects in the Cubs system per Josh Timmers. I particularly like his write up on Moises Ballesteros. In order Josh has the prospects in this order.
1. Matt Shaw
2. Cade Horton
3. Kevin Alcantara
4. Owen Caissie
5. Ballesteros

His hit tool is premium, but can he be useful enough in the field? I like the idea of being a DH, and pairing him with a control pitcher who won't tax him as much behind the plate.

He could be really useful in stretches as an injury call-up at some points this year. If Seiya has another oblique injury, he could come DH and get some spot time at C or if another corner OF goes down, Seiya to the OF and Moises to DH.
