*****Official Meatchicken gonna get whooped by The Iowa Hawkeyes game thread*****

The only chance as I see it...

IA needs to push it down low (let MI collapse as they see that is IA's game plan), kick it out, and hope IA gets hot outside like they did last night. If not, let's hope we can rise to a 7 seed as it's over.

Michigan is playing like a big-time team, and we aren't playing defense. How come we guard two or three feet farther away than Michigan guards us? They are much quicker, I would imagine.

No fouls down low on Michigan is ridiculous. Anyone believe that? If we had the 5-6 fouls we should have down there this game is much different.

Just wait for those to tell you that Michigan has been the more aggressive team. That’s why they have six FTA’s to Iowa’s one.

AMEN BROTHA, if you don't know how to teach zone, don't. I know there are ways to beat a zone, but the way teams beat ours is just plain stupid, we over rotate and we pack one side, all it takes to beat out zone is a reversal of the ball and a post to flash low, they either get a 3 wide open or a easy dump down.

No choice because we can't play man against their guards or any guards in the big ten. Connor is giving me panic attacks when he passes the ball. Need to pick and pop with Garza get Teske away from the hoop. Garza should not dribble. Catch and shoot or kick it back out.

Quit bitching about the refs. We don’t get fouls because our guards are never going to basket. Garza flops and flails and falls trying to sell fouls but in truth, he simply cannot elevate and gets shots blocked because he cannot elevate. Our guards need to drive like they are a threat to actually score a basket.

Nonsense. Garza is an incredible post player and he is getting fouled every time he touches the ball. It isn't being called

Zone is a junk D , if the other team is smart enough to manipulate it by overloading then your going to give up shots.

But Iowa cant play man with our starters. It's not even an option.
Tell syracuse it's a junk defense, its a zone defense that is supposed to help a team that can't play man to man keep their guys in front of them or force a team to shoot over it. Well we don't even force them to shoot over it, they are wide open and teams easily drive on us because we over rotate or we don't understand the spacing.

The bottom line is that Iowa can play good basketball when they can move the ball. Michigan is not allowing us to do that and forcing us to drive it quick or feed the post. We can score in the post, but we won't be able to do it consistent enough to outscore them that way. We need some outside scoring in order to compete, but in a game like this you need a guard that can get downhill and draw an extra defender to kick to an open man for a 3. We don't have that playmaker.

They have an enormous mismatch in the post but they're not playing with enough patience or spacing to capitalize on it.

If Michigan comes out in first 3 minutes and goes up 16 or so, it’s over. It will be a good woodshedding. If we can shave off 6 or 7 points in first 5, we will be in it until end. More Kriener, Baer and Wieskamp needs to be aggressive.

Michigan loves to put their hands straight up and undercut you with the body. They do it nearly every time and it seldom gets called.

They played zone all last night.

It's not about teaching, zone can always be beaten with smart play.

But again we cannot play man against UM with JBO and Garza. Their offense revolves around high ball screens. They would eat it alive. It would lead to dunks and even more wide open 3s.

We don't have those kind of guards at Iowa. If Iowa had a Glyn Watson type guard it would be a different story. At least there would be the threat of a drive and the potential to get a guy an open look. Guards are being totally suffocated. Fran has no buttons to push unless Bohannon starts hitting from 25.

Because our coaches don't coach defense

Every team that plays zone has a split second when the ball is thrown to the wing and they have two people that are going to need to communicate as to how to 'bump' that coverage. Syracuse even has the same issue, it's a big part of zone coverage and not easy. The big thing is that it must be communicated by the high man in the zone to 'bump' the low man who has came out to cover. I'm sure that Iowa has worked on this rotation, but Michigan did a great job of putting us in that situation and we didn't communicate it.

Exactly.

Not expecting a win but they need to compete. Don't get boat raced here and I can take an L against Michigan.

Actually it should go inside every time Brazdakis is guarding one of our bigs.

That's an easy bucket.

Problem is they dont have the patience or intelligence to keep proper spacing and get the ball where it needs to go.

I agree with you there but the spacing is bad for the guards. Im afraid the bigs will be doubled and there will be nowhere to go if the guards can't do more.

There is a reason we have the looks we do in the post. Michigan doesn't respect our posts to score often enough to beat them. They are playing behind and daring us to beat them this way and putting pressure on our guards to take away good looks.
