I still think they could have made a better effort to get Wadley in Space more and took more chances down field and got the TEs more involved., just didn't see an effort to find mismatches..
god damn...what a great effort by the Hawks. If Kirk saw offense as something more than a means of ball control and clock management... we would have won.

Unfortunately, there have probably been at least 5 of those that Iowa has lost over the years, for every one that they've won.
It's pretty simple... Stop Wadley and you stop Iowa. Iowa QB/Receiver play is not respected therefore expect 8 in the box every game, until Iowa can exploit that.

This was kind of a typical Iowa game at home against a top team. Relatively conservative play calling and putting it on the defense to keep it close with chance to win at the end.

PSU had 8 guys in the box all night. To top it off, they were jumping running lanes. The offense didn't even attempt to exploit it either.
It just depends on how the boys take this. This is a threshold moment and they could let this ruin the rest of their season, or they could use it as big motivation. It just depends on what choice they make.
This might be the best game they'll play all season. I hope they show up in the rest of their games, but I don't know if they'll give it everything in every game the rest of the way. That expectation would kind of be unrealistic. I mean they damn near beat a team with the likely Heisman winner putting on a show. It's possible they might not be able to rise to this level again this season.

I'm not a big fan of nepotism, so I wont scream too loud if Iowa looks outside the family tree to fill Kirk's replacement. But if the next 20 years of Hawkeye football looks like the last 20 years, I'd be happy. Just look to Nebraska to see what happens when a program doesn't appreciate its limitations.

As much as the Iowa D is known for give up a lot of yardage, I don't ever remember a game where they gave up so many yards and yet still came up with key stops when needed, right up until the last play. They must have had at least half a dozen times when they held when needed.

Yeah, just looking at the final numbers. PSU 579 yds, Iowa 273 yds. If you look at those numbers you have to wonder why the game was close. Obviously key stops but Wow.
We ran a lot because the passing game is not where it needs to be IMO. That we almost pulled it out is a credit to the team...PSU has a real top notch back in Barkley and this could have been a 2-3 touchdown differential real easily.
