*** Official Transfer Portal-Palooza Thread ***

With both Sandforts, and Patrick I disagree.
Something everyone should keep in mind, right now we have 1 likely open scholarship (Kris). Other than that we would need guys to leave in order to take others.
I suspect we get some departures, but I doubt we see a mass exodus. I don’t buy into the TP conversation that’s happening in this thread (go back and watch his postgame interview from Indiana from just last week; that’s a guy who loves Fran and the program). Right now I’d expect at least one of JO and Mulvey, maybe even both. Other than that we will just have to wait and see.
Both would be ideal but Mulvey seems to really love being on the bench and not playing.

haha, we always need an upgrade at the 1 spot with Fran. A former top college point guard with lots of good history as a coach and offensive minded coach and he cant get a top point guard here. Maybe Fran doesnt want a one and doner.
Would be very surprised if Fran goes after a 1, unless someone leaves. Already 3 and Perkins can also play 1. I would love to add an experienced 4 and 5, but must have at least one of the two IMO.

Have to get another big and if Mulvey and JO aren't going to play next year they need to leave and be replaced with guys who can.

If they both leave, Fran could even go after 3 interior players, but would want at least one to only have 1 year of eligibility to open up recruiting. I liked the dream someone threw out of getting Hunter Dickenson, whose game would thrive under Fran. Howard sucks as a coach, except recruiting. Won't happen, but a good thought.

No, we know for a fact there was no swarm.

We don't know what Fran will do with it now.

If he chooses not to use it now he should be fired before next season starts.

Not using it is 100% not an option.
The CEO of the Swarm has said he talks to Fran regularly and that Fran is excited about having the Swarm in place and utilizing it.

I have no idea why anyone would be saying otherwise. Lack of NIL is literally the reason we missed on the big men last year.

Right.

I don't know how people can act like having this tool will be the same as not having it. That makes no sense.

Just look at the difference this off season in football.

With a player like Perkins you wonder if they want to go home if given the opportunity. Does he have 2 years left because of COVID? I’ve given up worrying about transfers, it’s just part of the norm.

I’ve always been a big fan of Josh, but it may be time for him to move on. There is plenty of talent out there at smaller schools and I’d be shocked if Fran doesn’t pick up someone like Rebraca to fill the gap at center. Garza is still a shining example of how Fran can boost the profile of a scoring center.

Hunter is playing well currently for Howard

I think if Josh decides to enter the portal after this season, Fran needs to let him go. I get why we welcomed him back last year after he entered the portal...we needed big bodies (or at least Fran thought we did. Turns out Rebraca was so good we really didn't.)

Finding a 2 will be a priority if, as widely rumored, Perkins enters the portal after the season is over. The last minutes of yesterday's game likely didn't encourage him to stick around for next year.
What? This is first “rumor” I’ve heard of Perk in portal next season? Say it ain’t so!

Losing playing time because of the hidden rule about at least one McCaffery has to be on the court at all times, if not two. Maybe because he is just tired of the "family business" plain and simple. Not to mention the laziness/disruption PM causes on the court. And yes, PM has one good game every 10/15 games. JMO and/or observations.
Doesn’t Perkins already start all games?

Not disagreeing that we'd need a two for depth, but I've got to say I've been extremely impressed with Dix this year. His defense, ball handling and shooting have all been better than expected. Even if Perkins sticks around next year I think we will see a lot of Dix.

I think our most likely portal departures are Bowen, Mulvey, and Ogundele.

With Bowen, I think he's got to be disappointed in his playing time this year, and with Ulis, Perkins, and Dix all returning (all who played minutes at PG), there's no clear path to more playing time next year. Additionally, as a young PG with a lot of potential, Bowen's NIL market value might be relatively high.

With Mulvey, you have a guy who has already burned two years of eligibility and is probably still behind Ogundele and any potential big we might get from the portal. He could be behind Owen Freeman as well. It's hard for me to see a path for him to become a regular part of the rotation in the two years he has left. But maybe he's happy to just be cheering from the bench.

With Ogundele, it's a similar situation to Mulvey, with the exceptions that Ogundele seems to at least be ahead of Mulvey, and Ogundele only has one year left. (And because he tried the portal last year and apparently didn't find anything he liked.) Of these three, he's the least likely to leave, I think.

My longshot shocker pick for a potential portal departure is Patrick McCaffery. I have no idea what is going on with his mental health, but it's not hard for me to imagine a scenario where he might see a benefit of finishing his career somewhere where he doesn't have the pressure of being the coach's son.

The only way anyone else leaves is because they are chasing NIL dollars. Which certainly could happen in this modern world of college athletics. The days of guaranteed starters not seeking other options are over.

This,.. and as another long shot I'll also predict that Jack goes elsewhere..

Personally I think Bowen sticks it out. Need to remember that coach Eldridge has known Bowen since he was born--he literally held him at the hospital. It's definitely discouraging to not see playing time, but he also has very tangible things he knows he needs to work on in order to get that playing time: turnovers and getting into the offense in the half court. He basically was pulled from the rotation after his 2 turnovers in less than 4 minutes against Rutgers in early January, before that he was definitely in the rotation and even started the one game that Ulis missed. If he were to transfer, he'd likely have to go to the mid major level if he wanted immediate playing time and I just don't see him doing that with the relationships he has at Iowa. If he improves the turnover issue, I wouldn't be shocked at all if he becomes the starting PG for the team in the off-season (which is why I wouldn't be surprised to see Ulis depart).

Mohawkeye - I respectfully disagree with your assessment of Dix's defense. From where I sit, the reason why he is seeing limited minutes (at most) is because other teams are absolutely exploiting his inability to stop the person to whom he is assigned to defend. Several teams starting isolating their offensive player against Dix and were getting easy lay-up after easy lay-up after easy lay-up. When PMac took his leave of absence, Dix was touted as potentially playing some PG and saw time as an off-guard. He demonstrated an ability to score. But, the "cost" of Dix on the floor outweighs the "benefit" and, as a result, there haven't been any minutes of consequence for him. Against Indiana, they couldn't get Dix (and Ugundele) off the court fast enough after about 2-3 minutes of court time.

I'm hopeful that Dix will evolve into a really good player. He's one hell of an athlete and he's coming off a horrific injury. This post isn't meant to conclude that Dix will be a liability in years to come. Not in the least. Hell, Sandfort's defense is not great right now but it has improved from last year (hopefully it will continue to improve). Dix is just a defensive liability (and a big one) right now . . . I'd be hard pressed to say that he's much better than Bohannon at this point.

Hunter is playing well currently for Howard
Hunter is extremely talented and his size makes him hard to stop. As long as he is on the court, he will make plays, especially on offense. UM's limited success, despite Dickenson and some of the most talented young players in the league, is largely Howard not fully utilizing Dickenson. I think he was not even named to one of the first team all B1G teams...

I agree Michigan has a lot of talent and Howard coached them to a little over .500 season. Iowa can only dream of having that much talent IMO.

I have to wonder how many of these transfers actually work out for their new teams. Seems like everyone we play has at least one that is a contributing member. How many transferred and then just sat? Not all transfers are created equal.

Well 62 of the top 100 transfers from last offseason are double digit scorers this year.

Just look at the Big Ten. Here's all the starters who were transfers at one point:
Filip Rebraca
Miller Kopp
Chase Audige
Tyson Walker
Joey Hauser
Jahmir Young
Don Carey
Terrance Shannon
Matthew Mayer
Dain Dainja
Aundre Hyatt
Cam Spencer
Jalen Pickett
Andrew Funk
Cam Wynter
Max Klesmit
Derick Walker
Sam Griesel
CJ Wilcher
Emmanuel Bandoumel
Kesei Tominaga (JUCO)
Ice Likele
Justice Sueing
Sean McNeil
Dawson Garcia
Jamison Battle
Ta'Lon Cooper

And those are just the current starters--there's more transfers in rotations or were injured this year.

So much loathing by our fans for a young man who has struggled with some serious diseases practically his whole life. What do you want from him? An apology for letting you down? His stats on the year were almost identical to last year, while dealing with a serious condition. This is real life, not a utopian experience for you.

Nah man...Storm.

Our NIL is literally that we have Hally Berry out recruiting transfers in character as Storm from X-Men. Pretty compelling if you ask me. 😍

Bowen isn't leaving. He came in last year in an interview saying he new he wasn't ready and knew he needed a year to be able to play. I don't see any way that Perkins would leave either. Josh i definitely expect to transfer. No idea about Mulvey. I still hope he takes a big step up.

I like the big posted earlier but Dickinson would thrive here. He does fine at Michigan but is often not involved nearly enough in the offense. Michigan finished way lower than they should have this season. Iowa was 1 game from finishing 2nd in the big. Nobody thought that was possible. Of course that also sucked big time.

I went looking for information on Dickinson today via Michigan message boards since his name keeps getting brought up. The people in the know seem to think Dickinson will stay FWIW. Now, are message boards always the most reliable? No. But figured I'd pass along what I've seen.
They do however expect Jett and Bufkin to be gone for the NBA.

I think i was one of the first to say something about hunter just because i think he would excel at Iowa next season quite a bit more than at Michigan. It was just a wish on a star remark although there is an Iowa connection. I wonder if we could get Cade McNamara to help recruit him!
