*** Official Transfer Portal-Palooza Thread ***

I think our most likely portal departures are Bowen, Mulvey, and Ogundele.

With Bowen, I think he's got to be disappointed in his playing time this year, and with Ulis, Perkins, and Dix all returning (all who played minutes at PG), there's no clear path to more playing time next year. Additionally, as a young PG with a lot of potential, Bowen's NIL market value might be relatively high.

With Mulvey, you have a guy who has already burned two years of eligibility and is probably still behind Ogundele and any potential big we might get from the portal. He could be behind Owen Freeman as well. It's hard for me to see a path for him to become a regular part of the rotation in the two years he has left. But maybe he's happy to just be cheering from the bench.

With Ogundele, it's a similar situation to Mulvey, with the exceptions that Ogundele seems to at least be ahead of Mulvey, and Ogundele only has one year left. (And because he tried the portal last year and apparently didn't find anything he liked.) Of these three, he's the least likely to leave, I think.

My longshot shocker pick for a potential portal departure is Patrick McCaffery. I have no idea what is going on with his mental health, but it's not hard for me to imagine a scenario where he might see a benefit of finishing his career somewhere where he doesn't have the pressure of being the coach's son.

The only way anyone else leaves is because they are chasing NIL dollars. Which certainly could happen in this modern world of college athletics. The days of guaranteed starters not seeking other options are over.
I think Patrick would have a big eye opening if he went NIL

Is Patrick on scholarship? If not, maybe Dad could foot the bill and free up another scholarship? Do it for the team?
I believe that he would still count against the scholarship limit even if Fran paid his tuition. I could be wrong, though.

Only have 11 on scholarship now so it’s not like Fran was filling up the roster. One McCaffrey on scholarship is enough next year. I think you see a mass exodus after this season of Bowen, Josh, Riley, Perkins, and Ulis. Then add in the seniors Connor and Filip, NBA bound Kris and something just isn’t right with this team. Fran will have to do a total overhaul with the portal, unless he gets an offer from ND or Syracuse with his New York ties and bolts too.

I am not sure about all of those players, but you are right about something being wrong with this team. I believe it is nepotism and it has destroyed chemistry. This team is not a happy team, and their half-*** play reflects their unhappiness. JMO

I like our chances to land a quality post player from the portal this year. We have two big things in our favor that we didn’t have last year:
  1. NIL money via the Swarm collective.
  2. An open position. For all the talk about NIL being the reason we missed on several transfers a year ago, I think the existence of the returning starter in the form of Filip Rebraca was equally a factor. I think the top thing transfers want — even more than NIL money — is an open path to a spot in the starting lineup. With Rebraca still on the roster, we couldn’t offer that last year. This year we can.

That's a lot of assumptions you got going there.

Looked pretty happy against Indiana.

Half assed defense is a constant thing with Fran because he doesn't sit players for lack of effort there so that doesn't mean anything.

He apparently already has a destination too.
Interesting, the innuendo mentioning playing up a level, an Iowa City native, and this "being a blessing for him and his family" might be telling. The fact he's not announcing while we're still playing may mean something. Of course, that all can apply to other programs, who knows???

I'd be interested in anybody who has seen him play at Belmont to weigh in if he/she thinks his game translates to the B1G level or not. I presume he has two years eligibility.

What makes you think he cares one bit about how much NIL money he could make? Assuming he does support the concept and that players get what they can, it does not mean that is what would drive him.

Multiple big transfers would be great, especially if one or both of our back up centers transfer out. We need one big transfer who can come in and play at a high level immediately.
Agreed, Brauns would need to come in as a compliment / backup to a skilled big at the 5 spot.

FWIW - one brief highlight clip, seems like pretty good footwork, bounce, and instincts regarding blocks, rebounds, and outlet passes. Hard to tell against mid-major competition. I presume he needs work on the offensive end unless close to the rim based on that limited view + his stats.

That's a good idea. I know some schools are using nil to cover a scholarship basically if they don't have one available. I do like the 2 referenced by the site so far.

Interesting that the tweet indicating that Brauns already has selected a destination has been deleted. Somebody must have told him to delete it.

P.S. Apologies on quoting myself but I wanted to get my message and likes count up :). Just kidding, the comment above is to give a people a sense of the content since the original tweet has been deleted...

Agree 100% that this kid appears to be a good backup/depth piece for the Hawks......but not a starter level that we need just yet. Maybe in a couple of years he's another Rebraca?

Agree, he can't be our starting 5 next year. I have a feeling there is something to this and Brauns is transferring to the Hawks (no inside knowledge, I may be reading way too much into this). If true, it does tell me too that Josh O and/or Riley M will transfer.

As much as I dislike the transfer portal, the one-time transfer without penalty, and NIL; it does make the soon-to- be offseason more interesting.

I'm going to say it again, Fran has not given up on 7 foot Riley Mulvey. He will be a big part in Iowa's offense next year. Iowa is going on a European summer trip and we should know by then if he takes over Kris's or Filip's spot in Iowa's lineup.
I have not seen anything that would indicate Mulvey is not worthy of considerable playing time next year with the minable playing time he has received this year.
He moves extremely well for a big man, rebounds, screens and is extremely supportive of the players on the court.
Until I hear otherwise, like him declaring for the portal, I'm going to believe that he is going to be a main player for Iowa next year.

You know, Eric Hansen hardly played as fresh and soph, might even have been ineligible one of those years. He ended up being the Big Ten DPoY.

I like both those big kids but one or both has to really make Eric Hansen like jump in performance to get much PT. Without a transfer Iowa could be looking at two true freshmen getting the time at 4 & 5 spots.

Another poster indicating that Brauns updated his twitter profile to a picture of him as a child wearing an Iowa Hawkeye shirt before this tweet was deleted. He since changed it. I have no idea if it's true but sounds like a bizarre thing for somebody to make up.

I know I'm belaboring this Even Brauns to Iowa transfer but I'll say it again, this sure sounds like it's going to happen to me.

Now, bring in an accomplished big to start at the 5 Fran!

Yeah I noticed the profile picture thing too. When you had posted that he entered the portal I went to his Twitter page and it was definitely him wearing a Hawkeye hat. He also likes a ton of Hawkeye basketball stuff (and has all year).
At this point, I'm assuming he's silently committed and the staff has asked him to wait to announce until the tournament is over.

Pleasantly surprised by that video.

Don't think he'd be out of his league physically in the big ten.

I hope you are right. He does move very well and is incredibly supportive of other team members. Mainly, he needs to have much more confidence, gain strength, and be much more aggressive.

You can't gain confidence by sitting on the bench and Fran was not going to reduce the playing time of Kris or Pilip and keep them from increasing their stats. That's just the way Fran has been rolling these past years from Joe Wieskamp to Luka Garza to the Murray Twins to Rebraca.
Mulvey will get his chance next year.
When Keegan was a Freshmen he should have been starting by the end of the year, just as last year Kris should have been starting by the end of last year. Fran missed the opportunity to put a more athletic team on the court that may have changed the results of the last 2 NCAA tournaments but that's my opinion.
Having Mulvey playing this year would have given Iowa a low post player that may have help Iowa in rebounding and helped Kris and Pilip too, but that would have limited Patrick's court time and that wasn't going to happen.

Mulvey needs to enter transfer portal. I wish him well, but he is not a Big10 starting post.

The Brauns kid looks a lot better than Riley or Josh. Much better. Looks like a higher upside than we thought Filip had, and Filip is a good player.

What is Nickels situation thought to be? Already fixed and just waiting? Not necessarily at Iowa but somewhere?
