Is a having a bad day on the recruiting front. Lost their qb to Florida and Jack Carmen to Clemson. Experts thought he was going to Ohio State. They dropped from 1st to 5th on recruiting rankings.

This makes it harder for the Blue Bloods!!! They cannot just steal kids from places like Iowa when the miss on someone. This is good for Iowa!!!!

Bingo. This is the reason for the early signing period. To help with parity. On a day like this when a Ohio St or Alabama all of a sudden losses a couple guys they thought they were going to get they are no longer able to go after the top players from a team like Iowa as fallback recruits. It is also important for Iowa to get all of its guys inked right away so these big schools don't come calling within hours of losing their top guy.

However will they survive? I kid. Their recruiting has been insane the last few years, I'm sure they will still field a good team.

Yes i hope it changes further to put the early signing period before the season starts. You could keep the late signing period as well, but at least give the options for players to take official visits during the summer and sign if they choose to do so. The Ohio States and Alabamas of the world would like signing day to be as late as possible as it forces back the time when they have to offer guys. Iowa and others don't have the same option, they have to make decisions on guys early. It could end up like basketball where many of the truly elite players don't sign in November but wait until April so they know exactly whether they have a clear path to playing time.

Of course we will hear Meyer and Saban complain that this is not "what's best for the player." Nonsense. They just like waiting as late as possible, that's it.

Actually, OSU signed a different QB, and never sent a LOI to the kid from Florida. They still got the QB they wanted, and still will be #1 in recruits signed

OSU agreed to stop recruiting Carmen because of a self reported violation. Story on ESPN a few days ago I'm just to lazy to link it : )

Who knows who is reporting correctly, but the article I read said OSU moved on from the QB who went to Florida, picking a different kid when he had wandering eyes. Edit, I see this was already covered.

Yeah, I think if this is a bad day for Ohio State I would hate to see a good day.

Of their 21 commits signed, nineteen of them are four and five stars. They rank either first or second in most recruiting rankings. I guess it's all perspective though. They lost out on Parsons because of a silly mistake.

The Carmen kid went to Clemson because Dabo told him Urban was on the way out. He only really needed to show the score of the Fiesta Bowl but he was an Ohio kid and not many leave an Ohio State offer on the table.

The Jones thing was expected for a while, it seemed both sides were ready to move on for various reasons.

I have no tears to spare for Ohio State today.

If they finish #1 does that mean Iowa will only be 20 points better than them next year? Still pissed Ferentz didn’t hang 70-80 points on Oh St & Neb. Could’ve done it EASILY to both teams.

As I've said multiple times Ohio State and Alabama are on a whole other level than everyone else. You could probably add Clemson in there but even they arent producing NFL talent like those other two programs.

Hell Ohio State has put 19 kids in the NFL in the last two drafts alone.

Undoubtedly they had a couple free-agent stick as well

You know Urban and Saban will complain about this. They don’t like that to have to work to get a player. They like the 4-5 weeks between end of bowls and signing day.

This new system makes them work more than 4-5 weeks. Should be interesting to see how it all plays out. I think the non-blue bloods are going to benefit from it!

Throw in a junior year official visit option and it would be massive for schools like Iowa and would really detract from the south's recruiting. A huge obstacle for teams like Iowa is that most kids are committed before they can take an official. Not may kids from the most fertile recruiting grounds can afford to pay their own way to come to Iowa City.

Actually Saban and Meyer are insane recruiters. I doubt anyone works harder. The NCAA had to develop a rule limiting head coach contact with recruits and coaches and teachers called the Saban rule.

Earlier official visits start with this next recruiting class, 2019 recruits can make official visits April-June of their junior year.

Oh no 5th!!!
Actually, only dropped from 1 to 2 on the recruit list. Urban can complain all he wants about early signing period being hard with him not knowing who might go to the NFL. Wow, poor Urban.
Go Hawks, great early signing.

What is crazy is that schools like OSU get 3 highly rated RBs to sign in the same class. The #1, #6 and #9 rated rbs.

Even crazier is that OSU is so loaded with talent at all other positions that they can load the boat at any position they want.

I really love Iowa's recruiting class this year- the "fit" into the system often times is more important than rankings.....although Iowa's ranking is considerably better than "normal" and even better when you look at the average per recruit- our overall ranking is a bit misleading because of smallish class
