Rumors of a potential shake up regarding the coaching staff and some wrestlers leaving.

Hate to see Okie State struggling like they have been. Looking at their roster, they really have had pretty decent talent -- just haven't performed up to their capability in recent tournaments. Losing a past national champ from their lineup, while definitely warranted, obviously didn't do their team score any favors. Had a good chat with WFL legend @CowboyUp61 at Nationals about it. Awesome dude.

No doubt, college wrestling is always better with a strong Okie State program. I have great respect for Coach Smith as a wrestler, as a coach, and as a person. Really wish he could right the ship and get them back into contention for national titles. Okie State has always been a worthy rival, and Coach Smith has done many things for the good of the sport, including happily agreeing to the Grapple on the Gridiron. Other coaches who will go unnamed, not so much.

Their struggles have been gradually worsening and the decline started many years ago.

Their fan base is old. It might also be noted that the assts staff are mostly alumni guys.

Lots of reasons for the decline.

Kinda the same issues as we have in IC.

I am in no position to judge, but the fact that nothing has been announced about changes in the upper weights coaching at Iowa is disappointing.
I can see where you feel like there are issues. We could also look at from a normal person perspective and say that this year Iowa had AA at 3 of the top 4 upper weights. Iowa has had a finalist 2 of the last 3 years at the top 4 upper weights. If you pull out SL in 2021 Iowa has had about as much success at the lower 3 weights as the upper 4 weights.

Makes you wonder if Ramos is looking to transition because Coleman Scott is going to OSU. Thought I heard he was talking with a fan about mending fences with Iowa coaches. Just a thought with the supposed names in conversation to take over for Smith.

*edited for clarity

What is this in reference to?

Sorry, I didn’t articulate it well enough which gets me in trouble with my wife a lot! I thought I read it here but I saw somewhere that Ramos happened to talk to some fans at Nationals and that bridges were being mended. That’s all. No impending changes or anything. Trust me, I have zero sources on anything so I could have completely misunderstood as well. I’ll see if I can find a link.

Did you expect there would be?

Who is on your wish list?
I don't have a wish list because I don't know who might be available.

Just not impressed with the progression at 184 and the style of Warner in so little first period offense. Just was hoping for an upgrade over Telford.
And I don't know what is going on with Cass and who's calling the shots on what body type/weight they really want to go with?

Same could be said for our middleweight coach but honestly I don't see any changes being made on the staff.

Our coach likes our guys.

Do we want to improve or not? I know he's got a sweet gig with his Wrestling Academy and I'm sure he is making a lot of money, but if we want to improve then we are going to have to spend some money. And last I checked, money talks. I realize getting him to come to Iowa is a long shot, but really no more of a long shot than the other names that have been thrown out there like Burroughs, Dake, Taylor, Snyder, etc. And unlike those guys, Max is done competing. And I would love to get Cox in the HWC!

It was actually Mitch who was asked for his wish list, but I felt it was an opportune time to chime in with my two cents.

gotcha. The "reality" is - there are few people TNT would even entertain in terms of hiring. Both M* and Telford have been incredibly loyal.

Give me Metcalf over M* any day of the week. Move Terry to the HWC and add Spencer to the Staff. He can coach and compete. Give me a former NCAA Champ and hopefully a world medalist like Jden for our upper weights. If Nebraska can get Tervel who is better than any heavy coach Iowa has had in 20 years why can't we? The answer is because Tom and Terry want to keep all the money for themselves. Make the changes before we fall like Okie State.

Tom and Terry can’t even buy clothes that fit, an iron to make them actually look clean or haircuts that don’t look like Rambo did them with his survival knife. But, yeah they sure look to be driven by keeping all the money to themselves.

One of the single best takes I have seen on this board. Thanks for that!

I'm not saying that is what drives them but answer this. Why have they ran off all the studs we have had come through this program in the last 10 years. Ramos, Metcalf, Borschel, StJohn. I'll hang up and listen.

I don't mean to be rude, but not sure anyone on here can "dumb down" an explanation enough that you would understand it.

Now, this is some grade A comedy gold right here.

Well, one reason might be that you can’t have an endless number of assistant coaches.

And that’s a list of meh coaches at best. Hell, one of them has very clearly shown he can’t coach.

I would take Metcalf, St John and Ramos 100%

Honestly it would be nice to see Morningstar and Telford leave, and get hired elsewhere. I’d imagine Morningstar has gotten offered a head coaching job somewhere. He’s earned it at this point IMO.

Regardless, I think Iowa needs a fresh set of eyes in the program.

You can. And that’s fine. I’d also “take” them. There are worse coaches and all are good guys. But there’s zero evidence that’s some sort of upgrade. ISU’s low/middle weights do very little outside of Carr who’s a stud no matter whom the coach is, and he’s not at that next level like one would expect after winning a title.

But you kinda did.

He exactly did. The backpedal is weird AF. I seriously think he’d let Metcalf breed him.

You know that I find weird? Iowa fans seem to think Morningstar would be a solid headcoach and hopes he gets the chance somewhere, but they don't want him as an assistant here.

Now that's ****ing odd I tell ya.
They're totally different jobs. I think he'd be great in a CEO role. I'm not sure he's the best developer of talent.

Dresser is a good example. He's always let his assistants take the lead on the mat while he handled the bigger picture.

Not many HC jobs pay 127K. That’s what he made as an Iowa assistant in 2022, so why would he want to take a pay cut.

Cue Mitch to chime in with the ‘why look at Dresser, not even in the top ten’
