Comparing a chemical addiction to a mental addiction is a little much if you ask me. Yes, yes....I know that there things that cross both. I know all about it.
And I'm not denying that there are people that can't handle sports wagering. I'm totally cool that they can identify that themselves and self-report to casinos.
I have an ex-brother-in-law who was addicted to gambling. It got so bad he blew his last paycheck before Christmas in the hope he could win and have a better Christmas. Instead, Santa brought nothing to his children that year. An absolute sickness. Nice guy otherwise, though.
Like all things, it can be an addiction. And a bad one. I don't go to bars or the movies anymore. I budget accordingly. I tend to break even or win more often than not.
This guy had to physically go to the dog track or the jai alai fronton to gamble back in the day. I can't imagine what he'd be like if he could gamble on his phone.
If you self report. The Casino will make sure to flood your phone with more parlay bargains of the week/day. There is a reason Casinos, social media, advertisers, and drug companies share research involving human behavior.Comparing a chemical addiction to a mental addiction is a little much if you ask me. And if you’re any good at it and win. They keep you from making more bets or limit the amount. If I was a track man ponies or dogs, I would be worried. I know enough about the sports I bet on.
Online gambling was 76.7 Billion in 2023. Predicted to cross 100 Billion in 2028. About 11.7% growth rate. My guess is the biggest chunk of operating expenses are advertising.I used to play two bit poker way back in the day and realized I was terrible at gambling. Thankfully I do not give money to the “house”. There is a reason casinos are often really big buildings.
I can’t imagine the money running thru the online “systems”.
That said, I get together with some peeps from time to time to have fun and donate money playing cards. We bring covered dish goodies and have fun. Sometimes I come out ahead.
I know a couple of guys who always talk about their wins, but don’t discuss losses.
There should be two guidelines. Limit the advertising and have to go into a physical building of some sort to place a wager.I’m on the side that wants it illegal again but the states would never do it. Too much money to give up. Never mind the amount of people and families that had their lives ruined because of this addiction. Everywhere one turns we get the online gambling shoved down our throats from television, radio, and social media.
Same but I needed to smart smoking meth to keep up with my parlays. Fortunately I can collect my winnings at Prairie Meadows and re-up on the crank right there in the parking lot.sports gambling helped me kick my heroin habit.
Is OP really comparing millions of deaths to gambling on sports?
Is that over two decades or more? Numbers seem a touch high. Still completely unacceptable and crazy. Is OP really comparing millions of deaths to gambling on sports?
How about we not run an experiment to find out.I have chosen to not gamble for the last year (for the most part) because I've been terrible at it. Something tells me that wouldn't quite work with the hillbilly heroin
If it’s not gambling, it’s something else. Humans are for the most part shit bags and addicts. Most people have some kind of vice. Some can’t manage their vice, which is unfortunate, but don’t tread on me to save the weak from themselves. And I do not gamble unless I’m at a roulette table in Vegas. I’m pro rights and letting people make their own decisions. Is that over two decades or more? Numbers seem a touch high. Still completely unacceptable and crazy.
Sports online gambling in its current form is a ticking time bomb. The ones with addiction will lead to increases in domestic abuse, bankruptcy, divorce, suicide, poverty, etc etc. All of which have a tendency of being a pasted down trait.
Get your point. But we don’t let tobacco companies run ads every 5 minutes or name stadiums. And especially not allowed to give push notifications or ads onto our online feeds. They’re in the business of getting younger males 20 to 25 into unhealthy habits that last a lifetime. If it’s not gambling, it’s something else. Humans are for the most part shit bags and addicts. Noticed when holiday shopping you can buy Draft Kings gift cards. Not a fan of how much and where they are allowed to advertise. The following opinion video does make some valid points. Especially about banning bets on phones.

Yeah, it’s gone way too far, because so many companies saw an opportunity to squeeze the suckers that are the American public. They bought the votes of politicians to loosen all these regulations. Yay, laissez faire capitalism!I’m on the side that wants it illegal again but the states would never do it. Too much money to give up. If cranberry juice was a home wrecker you might get my support there.I can't believe some of you want it banned again. Why so the bookies make money again. It was going on when it was illegal.
How about I tell you can't buy cranberry juice for some arbitrary reason? This is when my libertarian views come out.

Legality will ALWAYS massively expand your user base. It’s a barrier for many. And billanole is right. If cranberry juice was a home wrecker you might get my support there.
It’s the ease of use and social norming. Placing a dime on a Premier League game at 4 am. Shouldn’t be an act as mundane as ordering more cat litter on Amazon.Legality will ALWAYS massively expand your user base. It’s a barrier for many. And billanole is right.

The problem isn't that people gamble, the problem is that people lose. We just need to make them winners
I have heard of not homeless people who owed money dying in the desert as well.I have heard of homeless people in Vegas dying in the desert heat.
They were probably fine upstanding members of society until they walked into a casino and their lives were instantly ruined....
that's just good time management right there.Same but I needed to smart smoking meth to keep up with my parlays. Fortunately I can collect my winnings at Prairie Meadows and re-up on the crank right there in the parking lot.
Long term participants rarely come out ahead.
Winning at a 55% clip just to break even. Not gonna happen.
53 percent is elite. But they don't buck the odds like the public.Long term participants rarely come out ahead.

You could win enough money to buy a lifetime of whiskey and weed.I’ll just stick to whiskey and weed. Luckily I’ve never been bitten by the gambling bug.
Sounds like you should be bitching about the food industry if this is your premise on this issue. Way bigger problem then sports gamblingGet your point. Fully understand there are a lot of products that fall into this category. But the trap of compulsive gambling and treating the product being pushed as harmless hobby is terribly deceptive.
Especially how they currently are allowed to operate. Keep the winners out and suck the losers dry. Then once dry. Suck them even more.

And money won is so much sweeter than money earned. Trust me. Do it.
That's actually the complete opposite from what I've experienced. Myself and a few friends that like to partake we're betting on wild parlays the first year going for the big win. Turn $20 into $2,000 type of thing. We all got our butts kicked. Fast forward a few years, not it's bet on the smart bets that have the best odds. Be happy when you turn $20 into $18 more. (For those that might not understand you get your $20 back so you'd have $38 in your account now) Now I end the year ahead.Long term participants rarely come out ahead.
