How do you feel about FanDuel/Draft Kings/Legalized Gambling?

I was having a conversation today with some coworkers about how prevalent sports gambling has become over the last couple of years. It seems like every other commercial is an advertisement for Draft Kings or Fan Duel. I've never downloaded or taken part in any sports gambling and have zero interest in doing so.

I'm only 32 so still rather young, but I remember growing up and hearing about a couple people who placed online bets and there was almost a stigma around it. Now it seems like most of my friends and acquaintances are all taking part in sports gambling in one way or another. I know of a friend of a friend who's in deep already and has lost over $10,000 and still owes money to some people.

I find it weird that a highly addictive activity like gambling has become commonplace in our society. It feels very dystopian to me.

Don't care. It's a shame some people ruin their lives with it but those people would likely find a way to do it anyway.
I've been playing poker online for decades and am probably out a couple of hundred dollars. Maybe less.

I don’t do it (not legal in my state), but I do think it should be legal. I am totally sick of all the various gambling site ads on every podcast, but whatever, that’s capitalism and they must be paying well.

I like it and usually bet on a few games every week. Not talking huge money as I'm a cheapskate but it does enhance the overall sports experience for me.

I don't personally know anyone who has had their life ruined by it.

I put $100 in a couple years ago and played fantasy and had some luck. Then last year I got into the regular bets and haven't had as much luck. Now I just play a dollar here and there and win some. I've lost $40 this year on the hawks. Those were emotional bets where if they lost I wouldn't feel bad about it. IT was worth $20 for us to beat the Clones.

I can honestly say I do not know of anyone using one if those sites....but then I am also used to a large number of people around me having betting slips they check throughout Sunday pool league.

When gambling is around you 24/7 you barely even notice anymore.

Love gambling! I’m degenerate but up 50k last year and already 7k ytd. Wagered well over 2M last year to get there. Achieved highest level (Onyx) on DK and have personal VIP guy, also active on MGM. They just gifted me 4.5k in Apple stuff this week!

I prefer parlays and making late live ML bets but seems most gamblers have their ‘niche’. Done best at CBB and MLB. Been trying to watch my drinking because can bet thousands when wasted, much safer and logical when sober but won/lost more drunk. Last night bet 4k on drake -400 late 3 mins left to win 1k. Went to double OT so got lucky but that’s how I roll!

I don’t GAF what people do with their money. Gambling, hookers, blow or whatever! Just be smart about it and don’t let it affect other people’s lives.

I've done it two football seasons. Each time put $100 in at the start of the season. 1st season won enough for a cool wine fridge. 2nd season lost the hundred dollars about 4 weeks in and called it quits for this season. I'll probably do the same thing again next football season.

I don't have an addictive personality, so it's not an issue for me (also have a casino <30 minutes from me), but it seems like it'd be VERY easy for someone with a problem to get themselves in a lot of trouble.

It might be good if there were some kind of application/ credit worthiness process to evaluate bettors and help limit the trouble they can get themselves into. Yes, they'll maybe still find a way to get in trouble, but at least make it a little more difficult.

Here in Virginia you can also buy lottery tickets online, so the online gambling is not just legal, but government sponsored.

Whatever, been here lurking since announced NE joined BIG, enjoy reading posts just not active poster. For sure not Brian!

I have an addictive personality. I find FanDuel for me very easy to manage. Most weekends I’ll pop in 25-50, expecting to lose it. I’m a bad gambler.

But- last year I probably spent a grand in a weekend on virtual blackjack and slots- for fake ****ing chips.

Ask yourself which app is preying on people- gambling on sports, or apps that’s prey on people with gambling addictions- with literally no returns and stacked algorithms? One should be legal, with oversight- one shouldn’t. JMO

I lovvvvvvvvve it. Since it started I have bet around $35k in and I’m up around $300 over haha. I set limits and have never gone over my limits. I also take advantage of a lot of promos where it is “risk-free” or if you deposit you get X amount of dollars to play with.

For example I usually bet $25-$50 depending on how I like the bet and I usually set my limit to $100 a week. If I lose that all right away I don’t bet for another 2 weeks when I get paid but if I win I always remove what I put in and play with house money while taking profits. It’s all about being disciplined and responsible but I understand some individuals can’t handle it.

While I’ve done well at sports gambling, I love horse racing and have lost lots on TVG. The horsies take much more research/luck! Best to just go with the fav if you don’t do research.

I think anything that doesn’t cause harm to another person besides the person partaking should be legal.

I agree with you and the sentiment. The only thing I'd expand on is the direct family unit that can be impacted. People gonna do what people gonna do so can't outlaw it. But, should limit advertising away from areas kids have exposure to, not dissimilar to cigarettes.

I should prob put limits on but heard hard or you can’t remove. Most lost 1 game was 25k last year on Yankees, took it in stride tho.

It’s a little more complex than that, but I’ll agree with this. If I develop a huge gambling problem and lose my ass, it does put my wife (no pic) and kids in financial harm…but that’s not a reason to ban it.

We have just the thing for you…

As for OP’s question, I thoroughly enjoy gambling on sports, and I’ve been doing well. Started with $100 in August 2019 and have turned it into $2,100, not counting the money I have tied up in futures bets.

Through my own experience, and seeing what’s happened to others, bankroll management and discipline are the two most important facets to being successful. Picking winners is great, obviously, but it’s meaningless if you make stupid, emotional bets.

As to OP- if you have an issue with Online Gambling advertising- do you have an issue with Pharma advertising?

I absolutely review deg thread but seem to jinx when I share picks. Also make most $ with late moneyline live bets. Folks scoff at dude who lost 1.4m on chargers but I understand. Not to that extreme but will for sure bet few grand late (few mins left) on fav to win hundreds, even more depending on bet

I could never understand the appeal of gambling. It's just not fun as far as I can see. Obviously there are a lot of people who enjoy doing it but I can't see it.

People gamble for different reasons. Some do it because they want a reason to pay attention to something, some do it because they're degenerates, some like winning, some hate losing, some think it's a competition of intelligence, some find bravado in it, etc.

Yeah I guess but I just don't see the attraction. Maybe some people get joy out of throwing 5 dollar bills out the car window while driving down the road but I just don't see the fun in it.

Yes I do. Not to hijack my own thread, but I get the same uneasy feeling when I see a pharma advertisement that I do when I see a gambling advertisement. Half the time I wonder if these pharmaceutical ads are played just to make people think they have a physical problem that the pill their selling will help fix. I hear HIMS commercials on the radio all the time. With as often as they are played, you would think 50% of all 20 and 30 year olds have ED.

I am interested in the lines Vegas comes out with but I have never placed a bet. Don’t really have any desire. I view it like fantasy football - I am not against it I just don’t have space for another time suck in my life.
