Online Sports Gambling the Next Opioid Crisis

I have heard of homeless people in Vegas dying in the desert heat.

They were probably fine upstanding members of society until they walked into a casino and their lives were instantly ruined....
There are homeless people in little old Cedar Rapids IA that die from the freezing cold every winter. There's no Casino here.

I have an ex-brother-in-law who was addicted to gambling. It got so bad he blew his last paycheck before Christmas in the hope he could win and have a better Christmas. Instead, Santa brought nothing to his children that year. An absolute sickness. Nice guy otherwise, though.
A lot of times, those stories end with arrest / job loss as broke people turn to stealing from their employer.

I love the low frequency and low stakes gambling such as maybe betting 10-20 bucks on a football game or playing 100-200 on roulette if at a casino and view it as a form of entertainment win or lose, no different than paying some money to golf or bowl or play pool or going to movies for a few hours of entertainment. It’s sad that others let it get away from them.

In many cases the addicts have a story of an initial big win that started it all and they become addicted to replicating it, which they will occasionally do, but never near at a level where the math works.

I think it should be legal since states have legalized gambling in form of scratch off lottery tickets which are just as bad. We know a family friend who has won 5k twice and 10k over last 10 years on scratch off games and brags about it all the time with just about everyone quietly thinking he probably has spent 50k to win that money. Florida now has 50 dollar scratch off tickets!!! WTF!

I can't believe some of you want it banned again. Why so the bookies make money again. It was going on when it was illegal.

How about I tell you can't buy cranberry juice for some arbitrary reason? This is when my libertarian views come out.
You act as though there are no victims other than the gamblers themselves? What about their innocent children, or the retailers/utilities they stiff because they can't pay their bills, what about the tax payers that now have to pay their medical bills through medicaid, or food stamps, housing, etc? We created rules and obstacles for smokers but we allow gambling to run rampant, why?

If I was a track man ponies or dogs, I would be worried. I know enough about the sports I bet on.

I love horse racing. It is scary that I can sit in my living room and bet all kinds of horse races throughout the world. From morning until night.

In person you have a limited amount of races, it's about 30 mins between post, etc. Not on the phone. Just one post to the next.

I moved to Iowa in '23. Put $250 in DK and another $250 in FD. I currently have $220 and $460 in those same accounts without depositing anything form my original deposit. I just place small bets. Been down to $22 in one account and up $600 in the other. Even Steven.
I definitely can see where you can get addicted to it. Those that are I hope they get help.

Sounds like you should be bitching about the food industry if this is your premise on this issue. Way bigger problem then sports gambling
Not too many folks go broke from too many Cheeto transactions. Or Mt Dew addiction leading to beating the wife or kid. Directly targeting individuals that they know thanks to the files of data they have collected. With direct messages and phone calls seems extreme.

Companies have been caught directly calling users with tens of thousands in losses. And without insuring they could make good on them.

It’s exactly my point I’m not calling for an outright ban. Just we need some simple common sense rules. The advertising is out of control and the ease of betting is as well.

Yup, unlike firearms, there is no constitutional right to throw your paycheck away on games of chance.

Many people go broke because of eating too many of those Cheetos and drinking the mt.dew. Americans as a whole all suffer from our health issues which correlates with our shitty health care system. Then add in that it is leading to early deaths of a lot of humans that hurts families after years of watching an individual from eating Cheetos and Mt.dew.

Then add in the fact these food corporations are directly targeting these sick individuals that are addicted to these foods with direct messages and emails.

Flutter stock has been very good to me. That’s how I make money off of sports betting.

Sure, but that is similar to climate change. It’s done a bit at a time. Excessive gambling similar to drinking is instantaneous. We don’t allow bartenders to continue serve customers that are falling over themselves and then drive home.
I’m with you on needing to change our food supply rules. Need fewer commercials involving Lays, Coke, Pepsi, Frosted Flakes, etc. Need to push natural sugars fruit and vegetables.

Keep my Mt Dew out of your damn mouth YOU SON OF A BITCH

Online gambling was 76.7 Billion in 2023. Predicted to cross 100 Billion in 2028. About 11.7% growth rate. My guess is the biggest chunk of operating expenses are advertising.
Also of note 50% of the revenue comes from 5% of the users.
It's like every other addictive vice, most of the income comes from the addicts. Which is why it was very very dangerous to open this Pandora's box. Eliminating the betting apps from phones might help(?) but it's probably too late now. Too many people have already put the needle in their arm.

It's going to lead to some kind of blow-up and major scandal, there's too much money involved. I bet it will have to at least be reined in at some point (on-purpose word choice). And as a non-gambler the non-stop ads are irritating as hell.

Research in Europe has shown. That if you physically have to make the bet. Addictive gambling has deceased dramatically. The addicts will always go. But at least as a society we curtail and don’t normalize the behavior.

I also hate that gambling is a major part of sports talk radio now, irritating as hell.

And you get into non-politics threads (although there is a political component to this issue) and it's weird sometimes who you're agreeing with.

What happens when they do and the drinker drives home and kills somebody. The bartender and bar is liable as well.

It's rough seeing communities struggle, especially with something like the gambling industry growing while people are dealing with real issues like homelessness. Cedar Rapids doesn't have a casino, but online sports betting is everywhere now. It’s easy to get sucked into, especially with how accessible it is. I think, just like with anything, it's all about balance. People should be aware of the risks, and it's good to keep an eye on things like addiction, which can sneak up on you. If you ever want to dive deeper into how sports gambling works online, you can check out https://non-ukcasinos.com for more info.

Think a lot of it is. You can’t physically see someone with a degenerative gambling problem. It’s hidden. Unlike drugs it’s obvious.
