Oregon Scouting Report

Not too worried about Garza getting in foul trouble - Oregon doesn’t get to the line much. The key for Iowa IMO is to get Omoruyi in foul trouble. Everyone in Oregon’s starting five can shoot it, but their two bench players are both non-shooters. If Iowa can get Omoruyi in foul trouble, it takes away their only capable post defender AND makes it easier to defend Oregon’s offense.

Jesus everyone is pissing their pants. Guess what it is the second round of the tournament everyone is good. People seem to be forgetting that we are really f'ing good as well. It isn't going to be a cake walk. But if we are playing our best and Oregon is playing their best I take us everytime. Could we lose? Yes but I believe in our guys. Relax and enjoy the ride

it’s not piss. It’s sweat from the beer bottle

Great post - thanks for info, although after reading everything you wrote I get the feeling Iowa just might lose by 10 instead...:( I am getting an Illinois loss vibe - we won't have the speed/athletes to hang with them (unless Jbo and Weezy go off big time).
You mean Illinois without an NBA center in Cockburn? Okay?????

Honestly, I have to think that no regular season winner of a Power 5 conference has EVER been seeded as low as Oregon this year in the history of the tourney. That is pretty crazy to think about.

Washington was a 9 in 2019
Washington missed the dance entirely in 2012
Cal was an 8 in 2010
LSU was an 8 in 2009

I’m not checking any further. But, yeah, it’s pretty unusual but most don’t consider the pac 12 to be a good conference. They’ve looked pretty decent to me.

The Pac-12 champ being a 7 seed is ridiculous. They're a balanced, athletic team that can shoot and pass. Duarte is really good and tall for his position, put somebody like Keegan on him all game and hope for the best.

As someone said earlier, I think the fan base needs to be respectful of Oregon but seriously quit pissing your pants. Iowa is a top 5 team and with the goals the team has, should be able to take care of business.

I believe that Iowa's late defensive issues vs. GCU were a combination of things. Garza getting in foul trouble with some terrible calls meant he really couldn't defend the post like he normally would. GCU's inside game also meant that Iowa was crashing the guards down a ton to double team on defense to contest shots AND rebound. While this tactic probably slowed GCU, their bigs were still scoring and we were leaving outside shooters. In essence, our man defense became a zone or a triangle and 2. This allowed GCU to get too many open outside looks. In fact, there were a few times in which you could tell our defenders intentionally did not close out on the shooters to maintain an inside position. I believe that will not happen against Oregon because the inside help will not be necessary.

Three players whom I see as potentially influential in this game will be Keegan Murray CMac, and PMac. Keegan had four blocks against a largely front court oriented team in GCU; no reason to think he can't do the same against the smaller Oregon front court. I think he'll be even more important though coming out to guard them if they jump outside. Same with PMac, I thought his size influenced the game against GCU on both ends and I see the same against Oregon. CMac I thought made a subtle difference on defense against GCU by maintaining defensive stance against bigger guys. I thought he had some tricky tack foul calls against him but he certainly didn't back down. Against Oregon, he will have a more favorable match up against Oregon by not having to give up a ton of size.

On the offensive side, we hit our scoring average but the truth is, we did not really get into our game. Wieskamp scored over half his points from the free throw line, JBo had three threes but for the most part, our guards were not on their game; is may be partially because the refs were letting GCU guys sit in our guards' jockstraps through much of the game. But if our offensive inside-out flow can get rolling then it will really put the pressure on Oregon in our favor.

Iowa could lose, they are favored by only 4 in the early lines. But you play good teams from here on out. Yes, Iowa may struggle to stop Oregon. But the Ducks will most certainly have trouble stopping Iowa. Oregon is worse than is Iowa in adjusted defensive efficiency. This is not Illinois and their 5th ranked defense.

Oh I get it Dodger, I was just replying to the poster saying they reminded him of Illinios which I don't see at all. They may have some good guards but no one as good as Ayo, and no post enforcer like Kofi, so I think they'll really struggle to keep Luka and Keegan at bay on the inside. Frankly I think Curbelo has been the big difference for the Illini lately as well.

Agree with Dodger. This is what a 2-7 round of 32 game should look like. If we’re a true 2 seed we should win in a hard fought battle. I think we will. After looking however at how well the PAC 12 has played it’s pretty clear they were under seeded as a league. I believe Oregon and USC were co champs, correct? USC certainly does not look like a 6 seed. I think their length will give KU all kinds of trouble. UCLA has 7 top 100 players on that roster. They underachieved but they are talented. I’m excited to see us play the Ducks. Predicting 81-76 Hawks.

That’s crazy, I had to look it up to see for myself. 2012 Washington won the conference and went to the NIT.

Basically what I said was they don't have a team that will finish win/loss wise in the top 10. However they have teams that can beat any of the top teams in the country. In tournament play that is all that matters. Why you're seeing the PAC play so well right now in the tournament. A team like Oregon can easily pull out a win against Iowa or Gonzaga.
Easily?

The easiest way to solve the match up problem for Garza on the defensive end is to pound the ball into him on the offensive end and let him get their smaller defenders into foul trouble.

Been impressed with KM when Luka’s sitting. Better post defender. Team d is more of a concern than Luka getting in foul trouble. Would be nice to get a couple B1G refs this game and let the bigs bang it out underneath.

Connor might match up size wise, but will be at a disadvantage athletically against Oregon, and when he's on the floor it's basically 5 on 4 for Oregon since Connor can be left completely alone all day long and he's no threat whatsoever to make a basket.

Garza's defense is a concern, as he doesn't do it well.

There is a reason why Kenpom has Iowa so far ahead of OR. We'll see how this game goes tomorrow but my money would be on the Hawks if I were a betting man.

Lol this is a terrible hot take. Sounds like Oregon has basically zero inside presence...and we only lost that Illinois game bc Cockburn had a freaking game both offensively and defensively.

If Garza's going up against some 6'8 dude and not a monster like Cockburn, we'll be fine. He'll feast
I hear thee, I tend to like to employ psychological warfare on myself so I am not let down if we were to run into a buzz saw athletically speaking...whether it be in hoops or football. ;)

I think we really need Conner/KM/JT/PM to have good offensive games. Good teams that cant match Garza 1-on-1 will always double off one of them.

As important we need Luka to have a good passing game.

Iowas offense is better when he is patient and moves the ball.

Yup, no Kofi for sure. I guess in the end it was a moot point that they didn't have a dominating center and PG, eh? ;)
