he world of conference realignment has changed so much in the past few months. On Friday, with Week 1 of the college football season officially underway, Stanford, Cal and SMU officially are joining the ACC. As such, Oregon State and Washington State are the final two programs in the Pac-12 Conference. This has brought plenty of reactions, including a hilarious response from Rick Pitino after the ACC expanded west. Shortly after, the ACC announced they would not add the rest of the Pac-12 schools, leaving the Mountain West as the best possible option, per Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports.

“After talking to industry sources this morning there seemingly is no other route for @OregonState and @WSUPullman than the MWC. Obvs, but once determined both schools could bring whatever @pac12 assets are left with them and get weighted share. MWC deal is up in 2 years.”

The Mountain West Conference has been in the talks for quite some time, and with not many other options, it sure looks like these two programs have no choice but to go there. Earlier this year, San Diego State revealed its intentions to leave and join the Pac-12, although nothing ended up happening, and suddenly the Pac-12, as we know it, is in its final season.

The Pac-12 Conference has two schools left, and neither of Oregon State nor Washington State has too many options at this point. In 2024, both of them could be in the Mountain West, and there’s a high chance that the Pac-12 will dissolve completely after the latest move by Stanford and Cal.

From thread:

Mountain West presidents are scheduled to meet Thursday to further discuss & approve the proposal. Oregon State & Washington State will not be eligible for the MWC title game. Per changes to the CFP last week, they would only be eligible for the playoff thru an at-large berth.

Story: Oregon State and Washington State are close to agreeing to a 2-year football scheduling alliance with the Mountain West that is expected to include a compensation package as well as an intent for a future merger.

Non-scheduling portions of the agreement are expected to include:- a lucrative financial package for MWC to distribute- long-term intent for a P2-MWC merger- a financial penalty if OSU/WSU tries to poach a portion of MWC teams

This is pretty solid for a few reasons. If OSU and WSU were to leave in 2024, they would lose the PAC rights and cash to the other members. It gives them a schedule for the next 2 years. And it could merge and reshape the PAC. The PAC would obv be the weakest P5 (if they retain power conference status), but they would be a P5 nonetheless. A 2 year period gives the admins and lawyers time to figure out a merger.

The only way for this story to end is OSU and WSU keep the pac2 alive, merge with MWC as a P5 conference….then in about 3 years poach a lot of the Big 12 and kill off the Big 12….
I don't see the P2+MWC getting better media deals in the future than the B12.

I want the better ending where somehow, someway, they upset Washington and Oregon....
In the long run, I think OU and USC will be fine. But I don't think the move to the B1G is going to be as fun for UW and UCLA as they anticipate. Especially if UCLA cans Chip at the end of the season.
