OT: Spencer Petras

At some point, you would think enough Iowa fans would figure out the common denominator is Kirk Ferentz and the Iowa system.

Jake Rudock sucked until he went to Michigan; Nic Shimonek was unheard of then put up big numbers at Texas Tech after taking over for someone named Mahomes; Joey Labas was too much of a stoner and couldn’t pick up the offense; Spencer Petras was the worst quarterback to ever play D1 (until of course Deacon Hill saw the field).

A lot of these kids we deem as having no talent have benefited greatly from a change of scenery and have proven they don’t quite suck as much as Iowa fans originally thought.

It’s probably also worth mentioning guys like Charlie Jones, who was never ready to break into the Iowa wide receiver rotation and thus had to settle for a minor role at Purdue (lol).

It’s Kirk Ferentz, folks. No quarterback has done well in his offense. Not in recent memory at least. The last time an Iowa quarterback had 3,000 passing yards in a season was James Vandenberg in 2011.

That’s pathetic.
I'd disagree Nate Stanley threw for just under 9000 yds and 70TDs. 2nd ALL time at Iowa to Chuck Long. He got to throw plenty and he would have passed ALL of Longs records if he had more touch on the ball. He played three years 2017 to 2019 and was just under 3000 yds in 18 and 19 and should have been well above those numbers. He had plenty of opportunities to do so. To say he was "held back" by the Iowa staff is just not true at all....

Is McNamara capable of throwing the ball more than 30 yards? So far, I haven't seen much evidence of it. If he had thrown any kind of pass on the broken play (his only incompletion early), it could easily have been a TD. I doubt that would have changed the winner, but it could have caused OSU's safeties to respect the pass over their heads and helped run the ball.

1. You have to have a receiver 30+ yards downfield that is open.
2. You have to have enough time to throw the ball downfield once the receiver is open.

If you have 1 & 2 accomplished, then Cade can certainly throw the ball that far.

That's why the QB you went out and paid for in the portal needs to be an above average playmaker. 1&2 haven't been a thing with this program since what, 2019?

What happened to the receiver who transferred from OSU? He was making some plays in the second half of last year, and is definitely more of a deep threat than the guys playing this year. I agree that the wide receivers and O line are not as good as they need to be, to have a team that can compete with the better teams. They have running backs, but if the other teams' safeties don't believe that you will throw over their heads, running is going to be really tough against top teams. McNamara clearly does NOT have a strong arm.

Someone should do some research as to what changed from 2017 to 2018. Be a good podcast.

I think most of just want to feel something, anything but fear when the QB has the ball.
Agreed. It’s absolutely pathetic that for the past 4+ seasons our opponents’ fans get more excited than we do when an Iowa QB drops back to pass. Just think about that.

Kaleb Brown, didn't you see he just announced red shirt year. And he probably is transferring out.

Petras always, always, always was supposed to be playing in a Spread (or similar) offense where he could make lots of pre-snap and quick reads, make throws comfortably out of the shotgun, and under a "just let 'er rip" mentality.

We should have either adapted our entire offense around his skill set (and limitations) or just done him a favor and sent him off to another school for his own good years ago.

Instead we made him run our dog crap, under center pro-style system that was wholly unsuited to him, with its long drops and slow-developing pass plays, and we fostered an ultra-conservative "don't make mistakes, just throw it out of bounds" mentality.

Long story short, I'm happy for him that he finally moved on, and hopefully he can show off his talent the rest of this season in an offense that's better suited to him.
I think the same about James Vandenberg. He should have went to different program with a spread offense.

No. he can't.

And look what happened to that poor guy in year #2. You ain't wrong.

The receiver from OSU, never learned the playbook nor did he put in the effort in practice.

The Hawks have had QB issues since 2020 and the offense overall starting in the second half of 2021, but Rudock did NOT suck in an Iowa uniform. Beathard and Stanley did well here. The bottom fell out when O'Keefe and Polasek left and BF tried to simplify the offense.

nate also said he got ot no coaching on things like footwork and technique while at iowa

Something doesn’t add up here…..he obviously learned the playbook and made enough effort to get on the field and make plays. What changed?

We did have one and he under threw him on our opening drive.
After running for his life. I don’t defend Cade much but that’s a very tough throw for most QBs to make after scrambling forever. Nm the fact he has no knees anymore. I bet he hits that from a clean pocket easily.

Petras can throw decent when standing perfectly still. That's about it. He has years of undeserved experience thanks to KF, so it's not surprising that he can put up one good game against mighty Boise State as a 6th year qb. Looks to me like his stats were somewhat inflated this game from receiver YAC.
