OT: Univ. of North Dakota unveils new "Fighting Hawk" logo

voila!

Formerly known as the Fighting Sioux......BTW, Could they have thought of a more original nickname given the proximity to Iowa? At least the logo is not of a Southern Miss variety.

The hard cores will never accept the new design; they will never let go of the Indian head logo and Fighting Sioux mascot. My neighbor is a ND grad and flies the Fighting Sioux flag. He is among a group of alums who are still trying to find a way to bring it back. Past attempts to bribe the tribe which has objected have failed but he believes they have a price. The NCAA isn't budging and all of this is causing my neighbor to drink more beer.

It really does suck. Awful name.

Not that it's a good comparison, but I have friends that went to Morningside and have never gotten over the the change from Maroon Chiefs to Mustangs. The Fighting Sioux was a GREAT name.

With all the oil in North Dakota, why didn't they become the Fighting Frackers?

My wife (no pic) attended M'side and she had no idea that they were once the Chiefs.

The names were voted on. The far and away submission leader was Fighting Sioux, followed by no nickname, just North Dakota by a wide margin. (Both weren't on final ballot of course)

There was no vote for the logo.

Wonder if the received any consideration: Fighting Sue

I will say that even current students, 90 percent have Fighting Sioux jerseys and apparel, 10 percent have any of the new stuff. It's quite interesting how persistent fans are with the name. At hockey games, the chants are still "Let's Go Sioux!" as well.

This tradition is as strong as ever as well..

My dad and mom are both Morningside grads and I grew up within blocks of the campus near Peters Park in M'side. That said, never could understand why they went to Mustangs. At one point Morningside was known as simply the Maroons. They could have easily gone back to just being known as the Maroons and skipped the whole Mustangs thing. I guess they wanted to be horses like their cross town rival Briar Cliff Chargers.

As for the new UND logo, the nickname is bland and unoriginal, which is the complete opposite of what the nickname committee was supposed to come up with. Their mandate was to come up with a nickname that was unique, original, and identifiable to North Dakota. Fighting Hawks = FAIL. Now this logo comes out. It is just like the nickname, bland and unoriginal at best, at worst it SUCKS.

In order to force the new nickname and logo on the fan base they even went to the extreme of retiring every other logo they had in the athletic dept. This included a simple interlocking ND (looks a little like Notre Dame's ND) that the football team had been wearing on the side of their helmets for 50 years. Think about it, 50 years and now it is no more. Those poor letters. Iowa has the Tigerhawk but there are also other alternate logos like the "I", Herky, etc. UND has one, the "NO" logo with a Morning Dove inlayed in it, that's it.

Most UND people are know are beside themselves. They are so beaten down by this whole ordeal by now that most of them have just given up.

If you can't figure out how to bribe an Indian tribe, well that is just no one's fault but your own.

Excellent summary of my thoughts and insight into the UND fan base.

North Dakota became the 29th school in the NCAA with a hawk as their mascot. Unique, eh?

My first "serious" GF lived in the south end of Greenville. I got my first feel on Pollock Hill

So "Fighting Irish" is fine and dandy, but "Fighting Sioux" is not? Somebody please explain the difference to me.

Irish immigrants, as a group, were treated horribly when they flooded into the United States. The hot-tempered Irishman is a blatant stereotype.

So again I ask, why is "Fighting Irish" a nickname worshipped by the NCAA (and NBC), but "Fighting Sioux" is deemed an offense against humanity?

Double standard anyone?

The NCAA. The Congress. The presidential candidates.... What a country. :(

The simplest explanation, I believe, is that the ND tribe (Mandan Sioux IIRC) has had a long standing objection to its use and it all started with the Indian head logo which they regard as racist. This is in contrast to the Seminole tribe in Florida which has no objection to FL State's appropriation.
I do not think the NCAA would have intervened if the Mandan Sioux nation had approved of its use. That's my understanding anyway but I have not followed the details.

I believe it is the Standing Rock tribe but I could be wrong. Bottom line is there were 3 different Sioux tribes the NCAA required them to get consent from, UND got approval from 2. The 3rd tribe had an elder on the council who refused to bring the matter before the tribal council to vote on. So it's not as if the 3rd tribe voted "No", rather there was never any vote taken on the matter at all. Polling of tribal members indicated a majority in favor of the name but it didn't matter, no official action taken to approve the name, no go. NCAA said, sorry 2 out of 3 isn't enough. The NCAA did not make UND drop the name, instead they put them on the "hostile and abusive" list and UND could not host any NCAA tournaments, could not wear the logo on their uniforms in any NCAA championship event, other "enlightened" schools refused to schedule them, etc. The short of it is it made UND's life hell, they had no choice but to drop it.

Where Sioux nickname supporters get pissed is the double standard UND faced as opposed to FSU, Utah, etc. The standards they had to meet were much higher than those cases because, you know, money.

Yeah, thanks for the details. My ND alum neighbor still thinks that the holdout tribe can be bribed into approval somehow - who knows maybe they'll knock off the elder who blocked the vote. I/m telling you, forfeiting the "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo - for these guys, they would happily sacrifice their first born to get it back.

Nailed it. For years and years and years nobody gave a shit. All of a sudden people can't get out of bed for the "shame" caused by a fricking name of a sports team. Unbelievable.

Florida State Seminoles.. Chief Osceola on the field pregame.. But, they got approval from someone associated with the Semionle tribe. Just ridiculous the day and age we live in; changing a name unfortunately won't curb racism, and everything offends everyone.

For years and years, college sports teams used to able to change their nicknames and nobody gave a shit. All of a sudden people can't get out of bed for the "horror" caused by changing the fricking name of a sports team. Unbelievable.
