OT: WV beats Kansas at Kansas

Barta setup a situation where it was hard for us to really do anything last year. His contract is such that you at minimum need two down years to even think about firing. And not sure that will be a thought.

A lot of the problems in football and men's bball can be traced back to the mismanagement of the former AD. Between that and the information made public regarding his mishandling of basic managerial responsibilities that came out in lawsuits which cost the state money, it was pretty clear that he should have been relieved of his duties a decade or more ago.
He's a prime example of how sucking up to people with money, and thus power, can take some people far beyond their level of competence.

He was mind-boggling bad at his job and was a large tool. So glad he chained the athletic department to an anchor.

Right, but do you think he’d leave WV for Iowa? All of our fans think we are a bottom big ten job with a terrible NIL.
I put the info together below for another thread. I'm posting again because sometimes I think people forget or don't realize Iowa's position in the college sports world.

Iowa is clearly a major sports program and should be competing at a high level in basketball. We have very good donors - they just aren't supporting men's basketball currently because why throw money at a sinking ship? Thus, I believe Iowa is a superior sports program compared to WVU with more resources. And I believe we are certainly in good position to recruit a coach from the state of Iowa back to Iowa. Our fans are desperate for a winner in men's basketball and the excitement will be off the charts if they hire a competent coach that competes at a high level.

Links are included if you want to see where I got the info. First - we are a top 25 program for sports revenue and earn considerably more than WVU.

2022-2023 overall revenue for West Virginia - $105,960,843
2022-2023 overall revenue for Iowa - $167,417,806

As for attendance/fan support;

Overall ticket revenue Iowa made $29.6 million vs $17.8 for WVU.

Football attendance - 2023
Iowa - 69,250
WVU - 51,156

Men's Basketball published attendance for 2023-
Iowa - 12,371
WVU - 12,004

Women's basketball - the entire season was sold out vs WVU averaging less than 2k per game. And Iowa wrestling averaged 14,847 per home meet. So THREE winter sports sold more tickets than WVU men's basketball. (posting these numbers to prove fan support will be there if we have a winning program)

WVU's basketball arena is 13 years older and holds 1500 less people than Carver. They are currently working to renovate/improve the facilities - but so is Iowa. (renovation plans link)

As for practice facilities, WVU opened their 64,000 sf practice facility in 2012 at a cost of $24 million. Iowa also completed 120,000 sf of renovations including adding a new practice facility - they spent $43 million. Links: Iowa WVU

And finally, here is a list of the top 50 schools based on athletic support by the fans.

Total fan financial support from 2005-2022:
Iowa - $477 million. (16th in the country during that time period)
West Virginia - $354 million (27th)

In 2022-2023 Iowa fans donated $42.9 million whereas WVU fans donated $23.4 million.

Could WVU throw a fortune at DeVries to attempt to keep him? Yes. But the one thing they can't offer is proximity to his family/friends. I believe that has to be very attractive to him.

Iowa would have to pay wvu a boatload of money to get DV after only one season

His buyout would be around $4.5 million for the remaining years. His contract is $500k per year less than Fran. Hiring him will cause a lot of excitement. 3000 more season tickets is a million per year. Add in concessions, merchandise sales, and additional donations - both Fran’s buyout and his will be paid for very shortly.

And who cares about 1 and done?? He will sign a long deal with Iowa. The only thing that will matter 5-10 years from now is how he does at Iowa.
