Other healthy players quitting?

Yep.

At 6-4, there’s nothing to really play for from a business perspective.

Maybe this is what convinces Kirk to finally call it quits.
I'm not commenting on the rumors about any Iowa player not playing who is otherwise healthy, but as a general discussion, do you think NFL teams, at least some of them, in evaluating who to draft will want to know why player X quit on his team during the season (crappy bowl games aside), and ask if we draft him and pay him a bunch of money, will he quit on us if things don't go his way? The NFL does look past a lot of bad behavior if you can play, but I don't think it would be a good look for a player who hasn't practiced one day, let alone played one down, in an NFL uniform.

It is absolutely ridiculous that the current situation requires fans to fork over money for organizations like SWARM.

At this point, college football is a farm system for the NFL. Kids get drafted for baseball out of high school, right? Why not allow that for basketball and football players as well? I have no doubt a team like the Detroit Pistons would have invested money in (i.e) Cooper Flagg coming out of high school.

I think the NFL likes having programs like Iowa that develop players physically and mentally.

NFL GMs have stated many times that they know what they are getting in an Iowa player.

Iowa players have also stated that NFL practices are no different from Iowa practices, so there's not a learning curve for them at all. They know what to expect.

I don’t dispute the premise at all, but times and generations change. Take for instance the Tennessee Vol players on Saturday playing in arguably their biggest rivalry game of the year being more concerned about getting heaters on the sideline because it was 55 degrees out.

Imagine you’re with the Buffalo Bills or Green Bay Packers considering whom to draft in April and you’re looking at all the talent on the Tennessee Volunteers. What are you thinking?

If you own a stock, and you know for certain that the price will never go higher, you are going to sell. It makes absolute no sense to hang onto that stock any longer. For the same reason, when players like KJ have put themselves in position to be Drafted as high as they possibly could, it makes no sense to keep playing at the college level (even if it’s the middle of the season) and risking injury (i.e. your stock going down). There is nothing dishonorable about walking away from a team that is bowl eligible but has already fallen short of every other goal. Just plain, simple, hard truth. Get used to it.

This was unthinkable a decade ago. I blame TikTok, Fortnite and bitcoin

Makes me think you may not be the brightest bulb if you're basing your argument on the above bolded. How is it one could know for certain? One could argue a player could hurt their value by not playing all regular season games.

Disagree with this.

It feels like it really is reaching a point where the season means nothing after CFP elimination. Seems like every player with any NFL aspirations whatsoever starts thinking about what their next move is once the team's biggest goals are in the rear view mirror.

College football is in trouble.
College will be fine. More than fine.

What is in trouble, is our romanticism for what we think college football should be, but that has been decomposing for a very long time.

I think I liked it better when schools just flat out cheated.

I should add, but the NCAA even screwed that up by its uneven enforcement of its rules.

Potential NFL draftees are getting feedback all the time regarding their draft stock. I would think that they would know when they have reached their peak. Do you seriously think an NFL team might take KJ higher because of performance against Maryland Nebraska? Or decide to not draft him because he sat those games out? GMAFB.

Is it ever dishonorable to quit on your team? If so, when, and why at that point would it be so?

Nah. I'm not a romantic at all when it comes to football. I just don’t have much interest in watching football without their best players. I don't think I'm alone in that.

I think many NFL teams still have questions. One good partial season is not enough for owners to lay down top dollar in my opinion and probably in their opinion to. If KJ or any other player quits the Hawkeye's now what say's he won't quit mid season the next team he's on? There's more to this than you seem to think.
Not playing bowl games is one thing not playing regular season games is entirely different.

the good news is that as long as kj is playing no big names are involved at least from my standpoint

I wouldn't be so sure. I think you'll see a large dent in attention to it. People won't have anything to "attach" to. I LOVE CFB, but I got better stuff to do on the weekends that if I can't keep track of who is on "my" team, I won't bother. I believe there will be a significant amount of folks who feel the same.

I am, but I still love it. I miss a time when roses might be thrown out of the press box, but seeing the black and gold still hits the same for me.

I’m not sure what you mean by “in trouble,” but college football seems to be doing quite well, and people aren’t turning their TVs off any time soon. The money is only increasing. Do you think college football is in danger of waning? I would agree to disagree, if that’s your feeling.

If you are suggesting college football as an amateur sport is in trouble, then yeah, I get that. It has been like bankruptcy in that sense. It happens very slowly, then all at once.

People love to say things like that. Then they show up, or somebody else shows up for them. Some will, but it won’t be a meaningful amount of people, and the next generation of fans won’t know any different.

It’s entertainment, and we live in Iowa. You gonna skip out on watching the Maryland game on Saturday, and go to the beach?

Not a single person on here would be saying anything close to that if the current season weren’t disappointing.

The wrestling team just bought half their lineup. Guess what arena will be sold out to watch them on Saturday?

No offense to the current team but we only have a handful of nfl type players. 2 of them (LBers) will not be sitting out. No way. The remaining fringe nfl guys you’d think only 1, maybe 2, has the tape to sit out the remainder of the year. 👀
Really? Could be 8-10 guys on this team drafted. KJ, Lachey, Jones, Higgins, Jackson, B!ack, Castro...tben maybe Craig, Harris, Hurkett, Connor.

I heard this is because Kirk won't let Phil bench Schulte and start a more athletic Nwankpa/Entringer tandem at safety.

You may be right, and time will certainly tell. I'd rather go play tennis or golf with friends or work in the yard if it's a bunch of players I have no clue about or who they are year after year after year---hell, now it appears to be from game-to-game.
You're right; some will continue regardless, but the impact will be real.

Ferentz is just hanging around to pass Woody Hayes.

The way things are going, it sure as hell isn't happening this year
And if he doesn't figure shit out soon, he's going to fall below that .600 winning percentage for the Hall of Fame.
Edit: He’s actually under .600 now. So essentially, KF FAFO.

Certainly looks like the wheels are coming off this season.

KF doesn't need the $$$ and is probably sticking around so his SIL has a job.

Just end this shitshow!

If I'm KJ and the Doak Walker is off the table, I'd sit.

Nobody gives a shit about a 7-5 season.
Even Debbie fans at 5-5 still give a shit. Says a lot about you. Maybe you need a better team to follow.

And with so much money at stake, I really can’t fault players who are planning to make the jump to the NFL not risking injuries for games that are essentially meaningless now.

College football is a professional business. When teams are obviously out of contention for the playoffs, it’s just like dumping payroll and trying to plan for the future through free agency and the Draft (it’s just called the transfer portal and high school recruiting in college). Unfortunately, fortunately, however you see it, players are determining personnel decisions during the final weeks of the regular season instead of front offices.
These games are not meaningless. 8-4 is a lot better than 6-6. Better bowl, more satisfying. It's important to the program to win as many games as possible. Important for the fans (most of them), important for recruiting.

What does it take for a CF game to be meaningful? A championship or CFP spot? That's it? Well, then there are about 100 football programs in the FBS that didn't even need to suit up this year.

I'm gonna be really pissed if important players skip these games.
