Carr Defeats O'Toole; ISU Falls at Missouri

COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 3 Iowa State (16-3, 7-1 Big 12) dropped its first Big 12 dual in over two calendar years to No. 10 Missouri (8-3, 7-1 Big 12), 23-12, Wednesday evening inside the Hearns Center.

In what many dubbed as the "Match of the Year" between No. 1 Keegan O'Toole and No. 2 David Carr, Carr emerged victorious, 7-2. Carr, known for his crisp technique, showed flashes of his scrambling ability as he got two takedowns in the win over the defending 165-pound national champion. Carr also showed his prowess on top, riding O'Toole for the entire third period to secure the riding time point.

The dual featured four top 10 matchups and Iowa State took four of 10 bouts, including two of the top 10 matchups. Missouri got pins at 125 and 149 pounds to separate themselves in with the later coming in sudden victory.

Marcus Coleman got Iowa State on the board at 184 pounds with a gritty 4-2 decision over Colton Hawks. The wrestlers traded escapes before Coleman secured the go-ahead takedown with less than a minute left and rode him out to secure the riding time point.

Sam Schuyler picked up another victory for the Cyclones at 285 pounds to tie the dual, 6-6, after four matches. The Cyclone senior used a pair of first-period takedowns to defeat No. 7 Zach Elam, 5-3. Schuyler was previously 0-3 in his career against Elam.

Missouri took control of the dual with a pin at 125 pounds, but Zach Redding got the Cyclones back into it with a 7-5 decision over Connor Brown at 133 pounds.

Paniro Johnson dropped a tight one to No. 7 Brock Mauller. Johnson was the aggressor in the overtime period and appeared to get the match-winning takedown in SV-1 but was not awarded the call after a lengthy review. Mauller eventually countered a Johnson shot and took the Cyclone to his back for the pin in 8:45.

Iowa State will send a contingent of wrestlers to the Last Chance Open Sunday at the Lied Rec Center. Wrestling will begin at 10 a.m.

Doesn't matter.

Clone fans always think the other guy should get dinged for stalling. Their other "go to" is the ISU will win the next time.

Like clockwork.

STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State wrestling team took down Oklahoma for the 17th consecutive time on senior night in Gallagher-Iba Arena, 26-6.

The win moved the all-time series record to 149-27-10 in favor of the Cowboys. Oklahoma State has defeated the Sooners in Gallagher-Iba Arena every season since 1999 and closed out the 2022-23 campaign with a 6-1 home record.

Four Cowboy seniors were honored before the match, including Kaden Gfeller, Wyatt Sheets, Jalin Harper and Gavin Stika. In addition, Ricky Stewart, a two-time national champion and four time All-American for OSU, was presented with the 2023 Gallagher Award.

"Kaden coming back, having a daughter and making a commitment to coming back was big for us and really he's having one of his better years, discipline-wise," head coach John Smith said. "Stika and Harper, you think of those guys and they didn't get to wrestle a lot , but they're seniors graduating. Stika in Ag and plans to get into the meat business, and Harper in business. They are both great guys. Some of my best alumni are guys that didn't get to wrestle a whole lot. That tells you a little bit about Oklahoma State wrestling and what a fortunate thing I've been blessed to be a part of for so long… And Wyatt, what a crazy career he's had. It looks like it appears to be one of his better years right now."

After the Sooners' claimed a decision at 125 pounds to open the dual, Daton Fix put the Cowboys on top with a 15-6 major decision over No. 28 Wyatt Henson and they never looked back. Carter Young and Victor Voinovich followed up with decisions of their own, avenging losses from the first Bedlam dual in Norman. Young's 5-3 decision over No. 7 Mosha Schwartz is his fourth win over a top-10 opponent this season.

Six months after returning to the program for his final season of eligibility, Gfeller went out on top in his final home match with a 14-3 major decision over Jacob Butler. After the first period ended at 3-3, the Cowboy senior outscored Butler 11-0 in the final two periods, including a late takedown and four-point near fall in the third period that clinched the major decision.

"I wish they would've called a pin," Gfeller said. "I would've got hyped up for that. I don't know what I would've done, but it would've been something crazy… It was awesome. It's a lot of fun to wrestle in Gallagher, especially earlier in the week when there's a lot of people. I felt like the crowd was pretty rowdy tonight, especially for it being a Thursday. It was really cool. Great experience."

Following Gfeller's major decision, Wyatt Sheets' late comeback attempt came up short against No. 22 Gerrit Nijenhuis. Dustin Plott put the Cowboys back on track with a 7-2 decision over No. 22 Tate Picklo as OSU would take the final four matches to seal the victory.

Travis Wittlake used a reversal and takedown en route to a 7-4 decision over former Cowboy Keegan Moore at 184 pounds, while Luke Surber defeated his former teammate at Tuttle High School, Carson Berryhill, 4-1. Konner Doucet closed out the dual and OSU's season in Gallagher-Iba Arena with a 2-1 win in overtime over No. 15 Josh Heindselman. After riding out Heindselman in the first 30-second period of the tiebreakers, Doucet selected a neutral start and avoided being taken down to win on riding time.

The Cowboys will close out the regular season on Sunday against No. 2 Iowa in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The match will be televised on Big Ten Network beginning at 3:30 p.m. CT.

"It was a great senior class, just a bunch of really good guys who've bonded together and had a high goal and they wanted to be good and obviously propelled the program to where it's at right now," head coach Zeke Jones said. "You don't replace guys like Brandon Courtney, Michael McGee and Kordell Norfleet. Ten-to-12 Pac-12 Championships and multiple-time All-Americans. They're irreplaceable and they're Sun Devil legends now."

Today's win was ASU's first shutout since a 43-0 victory over Cal Poly in January 2020. In addition to the freshmen's win, 125 through 149 earned bonus points, and Max Wilner's sudden victory at 157 improved ASU's overtime record to 9-2 on the year. McGee earned his fifth tech fall victory of the season too.

"It's nice to get a big, convincing win," Jones said. "We wrestle a lot in phases. Shay Addison and Emilio Ysaguirre were new faces in the lineup. Those young kids did a good job, so the future is bright."

Quoteables
Michael McGee
On the last home match of his career….

"It feels good man. It's bittersweet that I will never have another home dual. It is crazy it is really coming to an end, but we aren't done yet. Feels great every time to come out here and put on a show for the fans."

On the fan support….
"Honestly, ever since I transferred here all the love and support has been overwhelming. I love being a Sun Devil and they're like my family. They just welcomed me with open arms and it has been just awesome."

Brandon Courtney
On the last home game of his career….

"Man, it was awesome. It made it so much better that none of us lost and just dominated. We put the pressure on just like we train to do."

On the fan support….
"
It has been a wild five years, actually six years. It's my sixth year and Sun Devil Nation has been great. The support I get is awesome."

Kordell Norfleet
On the last home match of his career….

"It lets me know I have been a part of something pretty special. Unfortunately I haven't been able to contribute recently. Injuries suck, but that is life. I know I got nine other warriors out there to kill it, pick me up, and get the job done. I appreciate everything and don't take it for granted. I've loved everything about the past 4 years.

On the fan support….
"The fans mean so much. They watched me transition from an unsure freshman, to a title contender every year. I love bringing people to their feet, watching their kids get excited, and being someone people remember and want to be around. It has been nothing short of spectacular and it warms your heart. You can always sleep good at night knowing you just made an impact. I think my job is done here, and that is what I care about, doing my job to bring people to their feet."

Wait did you actually post this on an Iowa wrestling board?
I'm referring to the bandwagon ISU fans that just recently jumped on.

That's a bit different than Hawk fans that have watched college wrestling for 30+ years.

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – A fall by Cal Poly heavyweight Trevor Tinker was the difference as the Mustangs edged No. 24 Stanford, 18-15, Friday, in Mott Athletics Center.

Stanford is now 6-6 overall and 2-2 in Pac-12 duals, while Cal Poly (7-6) remains undefeated in the conference action at 4-0. The Cardinal and Mustangs each won five matches, but Tinker's first-period fall over Peter Ming in the final bout propelled Cal Poly past Stanford.

Nico Provo got the Cardinal on the board first with a 9-2 decision over Koda Holeman at 125 pounds. Ranked No. 16, Provo trailing 2-1 after one, Holeman deferred and Provo chose down to start the second. The freshman escaped and scored a takedown to go up 4-2 heading into the final frame. Holeman chose neutral and Provo went to work, recording a takedown, two back points and the riding time point. He is now 18-6 overall and 6-4 in duals.

After Cal Poly took a 6-3 lead, No. 11 Jaden Abas knotted the score by shutting out No. 25 Dom Demas, 4-0, at 149 pounds. The reigning Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week, Abas scored a takedown in the first, an escape to start the second and secured the riding time point. The redshirt junior improves to 21-4 on the season and 8-2 in duals.

Daniel Cardenas returned to the Cardinal lineup for the first time since Jan. 2, posting a 6-2 decision over Luka Wick at 157 pounds. Ranked in the top 10 nationally earlier this season, the true freshman took a 2-0 lead into the second period. Wick deferred and Cardenas chose down to start the second where he escaped and notched another takedown. Wick chose up to begin the third and Cardenas escaped for a 6-0 lead before giving up an inconsequential takedown. He is now 19-1 overall and 4-0 in duals.

Redshirt senior Shane Griffith earned his sixth consecutive win with a 2-0 decision over Legend Lamer at 165 pounds. Ranked No. 3, Griffith earned an escape in the second and rode out his opponent in the third to move to a team-best 22-1 overall and 10-1 in duals.

Ranked No. 25 at 174 pounds, Tyler Eischens capped off Stanford's scoring with an 8-3 decision over Brawley Lamer. Tied 2-2, Lamer deferred and Eischens went down. After earning an escape and another takedown, he held a 5-2 advantage to start the third. He gave up the escape, but scored another takedown and finished with riding time to improve to 20-6 overall ad 9-3 in duals.

Stanford closes out its dual season on Sunday, Feb. 26 at Oregon State.

Virginia Falls At No. 9 Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia wrestling team (8-6, 1-4 ACC) closed out the dual season on Friday (Feb. 17) falling at No. 9 Virginia Tech (10-3, 4-1 ACC) by a score of 33-3 in the Smithfield Commonwealth Clash.
HOW IT HAPPENED
With the dual starting at 149 pounds, the Hokies got off to a quick start by claiming back-to-back victories with the opening bout coming on a late takedown. It would be a theme continued throughout the evening with Virginia Tech pulling away late in several contests – including two that went into sudden victory.
Virginia got on the board in the third bout of the night as No. 16 Justin McCoy picked up a 5-4 decision over No. 27 Connor Brady at 165 pounds.
Virginia Tech would take the final seven weight classes to secure the dual victory and a point in the Commonwealth Clash
THE COMMONWEALTH CLASH
• The rivalry between Virginia Athletics and Virginia Tech Athletics has a long and storied history dating back more than 125 years within the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Cavaliers and Hokies first faced off on the gridiron in Charlottesville in 1895. First coined the Commonwealth Clash during the 2014-2015 season, the rivalry has expanded and intensified across the 22 sports the two institutions face off in head-to-head competition.
• The dual was worth a point in the Clash and the Cavaliers lead this year’s Clash 5.0-3.0.
• UVA captured the Clash in 2015, 2016 and 2019, while Virginia Tech has won the Clash in 2017, 2018 and 2022. The 2020 and 2021 clashes were canceled due to the pandemic.
FROM HEAD COACH STEVE GARLAND
“Obviously we aren’t ok with the final score. What I’m trying to do now is focus on the positives. Justin McCoy got tough and won gritty when he needed to. Neil Antrassian wrestled really tough against one of the best in the nation. He made a mistake late in the second period and gave up a takedown with two seconds left and that cost him. Michael Battista and Ethan Weatherspoon were warriors. Both lost in overtime, but both fought their hearts out. Jarod Verkleeren wrestled amazing for two periods against a top-eight guy, but gave up six big points later. Marlon Yarbrough wrestled well against a great competitor, too. The bottom line, though, is we have a lot of work to do before the ACC Championships. We need to stay together and we need to be faithful.”
UP NEXT FOR THE HOOS

No. 23 Spartans Conclude Regular Season with Road Win Over Central Michigan

Spartans Secure Back-to-Back 10 Win Seasons for First Time in 27 Years

2/17/2023 9:51:00 PM

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – No. 23 Michigan State wrestling secured back-to-back 10-win seasons for the first time in 27 years on Friday night, defeating the Central Michigan Chippewas in a 20-13 dual inside McGuirk Arena.

The Spartans conclude the 2022-23 dual campaign at 10-6 overall, with all six losses coming against nationally ranked opposition inside the National Wrestling Coaches Association top-25. MSU cracked the 10-win mark for the second straight season, publishing a 10-4 overall record a year ago, also securing the third 10-win campaign of the Roger Chandler era. In defeat, Central Michigan falls to 6-9 overall and will conclude its regular season on the road against Michigan on Sunday, Feb. 19.

Friday's dual began at 133 pounds, with 25th-ranked graduate Spartan Rayvon Foley scoring a 10-2 major decision over Vince Perez to start things off. Four takedowns from Foley led to a dominant advantage in riding time that was rewarded at the conclusion of the bout, ultimately ensuring the first four team points for Michigan State. Redshirt senior Jordan Hamdan was able to maintain Michigan State's early momentum at 141 pounds, defeating Mason Breece in a 6-4 decision. A pair of takedowns in the first period set the tone for the bout, and despite a late push from Breece, Hamdan was able to pick up MSU's second consecutive win.

The Chippewas secured their first victory of the evening at 149 pounds, as Johnny Lovett registered a 12-4 major decision over MSU redshirt junior Peyton Omania. Leading the dual by a 7-4 margin, the Spartans and Chippewas got set for the highest-ranked individual matchup of the evening at 157 pounds. Eleventh-ranked junior Spartan Chase Saldate took the mat against No. 28 Corbyn Munson.

After a quiet first period, Munson took bottom to start the second. Saldate utilized a solid ride to build up 1:23 of advantage, but Munson took a 1-0 lead into the final stanza. After choosing bottom to start the third, Saldate logged a quick escape to preserve his advantage. A contentious final 30 seconds ensued, with both wrestlers seeking to score the deciding takedown. Saldate added a late takedown that was immediately answered by a Munson reversal, but the 3-all tie was broken after the Spartan collected the riding time point. Saldate's 4-3 decision put Michigan State ahead by a 10-4 tally.

No. 20 Caleb Fish took the mat against Tracy Hubbard at 165 pounds, with the Spartan junior scoring a 4-2 decision that put MSU out in front by a 13-4 tally. A scoreless first period opened the match, and Hubbard chose bottom to start the second period. A strong mat return from Fish started the frame off, and Hubbard was called for his first stall moments later. After 45 more seconds of Fish riding time, Hubbard was called for his second stall, giving MSU a 1-0 lead through two. Fish started the third on bottom, but was granted an escape before time began rolling. Hubbard notched a takedown with 25 seconds left and Fish escaped immediately, ultimately resulting in a 4-2 decision after factoring in the riding time point.

The bout at 174 pounds went Central Michigan's way by 3-0 decision, with No. 32 Alex Cramer defeating Spartan freshman Ceasar Garza. At 184 pounds, MSU returned to its winning ways with No. 13 Layne Malczewski notching a 6-4 decision over Ben Cushman. He opened his bout with a takedown halfway through the first period and chose bottom to start the second, getting to his feet for an easy escape. Leading 3-0 heading into the final period, Cushman started on bottom and coupled a swift escape with a takedown to tie the match. Malczewski escaped and mustered a takedown to go up 6-3, but Cushman got out once more to finalize the eventual 6-4 decision for Michigan State.

At 197 pounds, No. 19 Cameron Caffey opened his match with a quick takedown, but his Chippewa opponent in Cameron Wood got out 21 seconds later on an escape. Leading 2-1 in the match, Caffey took bottom to start the second and escaped 11 seconds into the frame. Caffey utilized an underhook to score a takedown with 35 seconds left in the period, setting the table for a dominant scoring run in the final two minutes. After time expired, Caffey had secured MSU's second bonus-point victory of the night with a 16-7 major decision to go up 20-7. Central Michigan took the final two matches, as Bryan Caves earned a 5-1 decision over Ryan Vasbinder at heavyweight before Sean Spidle notched a 6-2 decision over Tristan Lujan at 125.

Individually, Caffey climbs to 18-3 overall with a 13-3 record in dual meets at 197 pounds, falling one win short of his career-best 14-0 campaign set last season. Of his 18 overall victories in 2022-23, 12 have come in bonus-point fashion, including three major decisions following Friday night's result. MSU's only other bonus point win came from Foley in the opening bout of the night, his fourth major decision of the season and ninth bonus-point victory. The Ann Arbor, Michigan, native improves to 12-8 overall with a 10-6 mark in dual matches.

FYI...Dresser has his fake wrestling tourney today in Ames trying to get guys qualified for Nattys.

Broderson is the only starter going that can get the needed help. How funny would it be if he didn't get the gimme wins he needs?

Swiderski is so far down the ladder that even 2/3 wins wouldn't help him. Swid's only chance is to steal an allocation at the Big 12s.

Quite the program Kevie is running there.

Wisconsin view point.

Senior Eric Barnett, currently No. 6 in the country by Intermat at 125 pounds, made quick work of his opponent Kyle Gollhofer to open the dual match with a pin in only 30 seconds. The quick fall gave the Badgers a 6-0 lead on the scoreboard.

LaMont earned a hard-fought 3-1 victory in overtime against Northern Iowa's No. 14 Kyle Biscoglia. Tied 1-1 with an escape a piece after regulation, LaMont won the upset decision with a takedown in the first sudden-victory period.

UNI rallied back at 141 and 149 pounds, as No. 8 Cael Happel pinned Joseph Zargo and Adam Allard earned a 7-3 decision against Felix Lettini to tie up the team score 9-9.

No. 18 Model brought the crowd energy back up with a gritty 5-2 decision win at 157 pounds against UNI's No. 20 Derek Holschlag. Model scored two escapes and a takedown to lead 4-2 after two periods, then secured the victory with riding time during the third period.

No. 6 Dean Hamiti secured a key major decision victory at 165 pounds, winning 13-2 over No. 14 Austin Yant. Hamiti scored four takedowns against Yant and turned him for an additional two nearfall points in the win to put the Badgers up 12-9.

UNI rallied again at 174 and 184 with a decision and a tech fall win to reclaim the lead, 17-16.

Wisconsin's big mean then won the final two bouts to ensure the dual match win. Braxton Amos scored the go-ahead win with a 10-2 major decision against Northern Iowa's Noah Glaser to put the Badgers up 20-17. In his last-ever dual match as a Badger, heavyweight and No. 11 Hillger put a dagger in the Panthers' hopes with a 2-1 decision against No. 13 Tyrell Gordon.

Putting Broderson in this "tourney" is the equivalent of having a varsity wrestler competing in a junior high event.

Beyond embarrassing.

The risk far outweighs the results as we see with the injury to the NW 125.

Dresser continues to abuse the system.

DeAugustino has been injured most of the season. I'll bet he got the number of matches he wanted and forfeited to save wear and tear or recurrence.

But this "tournament" is a joke and an abuse of the system. I hope we never need it, but if we do I might hate it less.

Except DeAugustino didn't injury default until the 7:47 mark in the match.

Agree that ISU is a laughingstock for holding this event.

Guessing @Vallholl meant to post this one:

Wisconsin 1-7 in the B10, 8-8 overall. It would appear that the B10 is pretty damn good.

I told Dresser he should hold this event earlier in the season and call it the Soldier Salute, but he didn’t take my suggestion
Having it right before the post season looks desperate.

Any truth that the 2024 version will be held in Dresser's basement and renamed "Gettin Clones Qualified"?
