No. 22 West Virginia Falls to No. 13 Iowa State in Big 12 Home Opener

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 22 West Virginia University wrestling team fell to No. 13 Iowa State, 24-18, in its Big 12 Conference home opener at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown on Wednesday night.

"I thought we wrestled pretty hard," head coach Tim Flynn said. "You know, they're a good team. I think going into the match maybe we were favored in one or two, and so we got a couple more than that. Let's stay positive, but I think we could have done better."

West Virginia (7-2, 1-2 Big 12) put up a strong fight against the Cyclones, winning five out of 10 matches, but was unable to pull off the upset.

The Mountaineers lost their first four matches to fall behind, 20-0. However, West Virginia quickly rallied with back-to-back wins to get on the board. WVU would go on to win five of the final six matches.

Fifth-year No. 3 Peyton Hall earned his 19th win of the season with a major decision over Aiden Riggins, 16-6. Redshirt sophomore No. 29 Brody Conley followed Hall with a major decision over MJ Gaitan, 14-2.

One of the highlights of the night was redshirt sophomore Ian Bush earning his sixth win of the year with a major decision over Nathan Schon, 13-2.

To finish the match, senior Jett Strickenberger pulled off the upset in the 125-pound match, defeating No. 14 Kysen Terukina by decision, 4-1.

Who is this Maryland team ahead of Michigan 18-10 going into last 2 matches. Gotta love that hair on the Michy med team though, I think it is a skull mullet maybe.

No. 10 Michigan split bouts evenly with Maryland but fell 19-18 on the second tiebreaker criteria (most falls) in its Big Ten opener.
» Christian Tanefeu (125 pounds) and Jacob Cardenas (197) earned bonus wins with a major decision and technical fall, respectively; Cardenas improved to 9-0 with nine bonus wins.
» Beau Mantanona (165) and Josh Heindselman (Hwt) were also victorious in their season dual debuts; Heindselman earned a ranked win with a 4-2 decision against No. 13 Seth Nevills.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10 University of Michigan wrestling team split matches evenly but dropped its Big Ten Conference opener to Maryland, 19-18, on the second tiebreaker criteria (most falls) on Friday night (Jan. 10) in front of 2,150 fans at Crisler Center.

Both teams earned five match wins and three bonus points, but the Terrapins' pin at 133 pounds ultimately trumped Michigan's major decision at 125 and technical fall at 197 pounds. The Wolverines remained in striking distance late, needing nine points over the last two matches to overcome the pin, and came up just one point short.

Graduate student Jacob Cardenas, ranked third nationally at 197 pounds, rolled to a 15-0 technical fall against Chase Mielnik with two takedowns and eight back points. Cardenas slowed slightly while searching for a pin. Still, after earning a stall point midway through the second period, he used a double-leg takedown to end the bout at 4:54. Cardenas improved to 9-0 on the season with nine bonus wins, including six tech falls.

Graduate student Josh Heindselman, ranked 12th at heavyweight, closed the dual with a 4-2 decision against 13th-ranked Seth Nevills in his Michigan dual-meet debut. Heindselman scored on a counter-go-behind takedown in the first period but was slowed by Nevills' defensive wrestling over the latter two. It was his second straight ranked win as he improved to 13-0 on the season.

Senior/junior Christian Tanefeu opened the dual meet with a 12-4 major decision against Tyler Garvin at 125 pounds, scoring takedowns in the first and second periods, adding a two-point tilt in the former and accumulating 4:22 in riding-time advantage. He fought off a Terrapin single-leg attempt in the waning seconds of the third to hold onto the bonus point and pick up his second dual win of the season.

Michigan also earned a lowerweight win at 141 pounds from sophomore Sergio Lemley, who rallied from an early deficit to defeat Dario Lemus 6-3 and stay perfect in dual-meet action. After a scoreless first period, Lemley gave up a takedown out of a scramble on the edge but escaped quickly and wrapped up both of Lemus' ankles late in the frame and rode out the second -- then the entirety of the third to finish with 2:02 riding time.

The Terrapins took the lead with their third-period pin at 133 pounds and earned close decisions at 149 and 157 pounds to take a five-point lead into the intermission break. Graduate student Chase Saldate, ranked 16th at 157, led late against sixth-ranked Ethen Miller after riding out the second period and earning a quick escape in the third, but Miller converted out of a scramble midway through the final frame and ran off Saldate's riding time advantage before a late escape.

Sophomore/freshman Beau Mantanona earned a 6-4 decision over Alex Uryniak in his season dual debut at 165 pounds after the break. Mantanona started fast, scrambling for a takedown in the opening seconds of the first and was awarded another in the frame but it was waved off on review. The wrestlers traded reversals in the second period, but Mantanona could not find another score to expand his lead late.

The Terrapins took control of the dual with back-to-back last-minute decisions at 174 and 184 pounds. Fifth-year senior Joseph Walker, ranked 25th, finished on an early double leg but was doomed by a late takedown in a 5-4 loss to Branson John, while fifth-year senior Jaden Bullock, ranked 19th, dropped a 4-1 decision to 13th-ranked Jaxon Smith on a takedown of the edge in the final 10 seconds of the third period.

The Wolverines (3-1, 0-1 Big Ten) will hit the road next weekend for conference duals at Northwestern and Minnesota. U-M will take on the Wildcats at 7 p.m. CT on Friday (Jan. 17) before squaring off against the Golden Gophers at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday (Jan. 19).

NWCA Duals. UNI is wrecking SDSU in the finals. None of the ex-Hawks have taken the mat for them. Wonder what’s up with that.

? Rhodes and Glazier wrestled in their last duals before Christmas.
Both missed the Drexel dual before Christmas, and a bunch of duals this tournament. Cobe also had to med forfeit in a tournament before that. Hence, nothing up with them missing this dual.

Upperweights Claim Three Bonus-Point Victories
MINNEAPOLIS – No. 8 Minnesota (4-1, 0-1 Big Ten) took its first dual loss of the season in a 21-13 setback at No. 6 Nebraska (6-1, 1-0) Saturday at the Devaney Center in Lincoln, Neb.

In a dual that featured nine ranked matchups, the Golden Gophers swept the upperweight bouts from 184 pounds through heavyweight. Many matches came down to the final buzzer, however, as five of the Huskers' wins were by three points or less.

Minnesota's 10-match dual win streak came to an end with the loss, which was the team's first since last year's home dual with the Huskers. It was the Gophers' longest win streak since winning 17 straight over the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.

The dual started at 157 pounds and featured the first of tour top-10 matchups as No. 10 Tommy Askey faced No. 5 Antrell Taylor. Askey got a quick escape in the second period and Taylor had one of his own to start the third. Neither could score in regulation, sending the match to overtime. There, Taylor got the sudden-victory takedown for a 4-1 victory.

The only non-ranked matchup came at 165 pounds as No. 9 Andrew Sparks met Christopher Minto. Scoreless after the first period, Minto got a reversal in the second but Minto was called for locked hands, giving Sparks a point. A late escape sent the match into the third period tied at 2-2. Sparks needed one second and lead 3-2 but Minto got in on the ankle in the final seconds and secured the takedown off neutral danger to go ahead 5-3. The match appeared to be over but, after review, another locked hands call was made on Minto. Sparks had five seconds to escape and tie the match, but Minto prevailed 5-4.

Nebraska made it 9-0 after a 9-3 victory for No. 16 Lenny Pinto over Minnesota's 24th-ranked Clayton Whiting. All three of Whiting's points came via escape and now all six of his losses this year have been to ranked opponents, including five inside the top 20.

The tide started to turn, though, at 184 pounds as the Gophers picked up three straight bonus-point wins.

No. 4 Max McEnelly faced off with No. 6 Silas Allred at 184 and the Minnesota redshirt freshman made a statement to the rest of the nation in a dominant 16-6 major decision. Handing Allred just his second loss of the season, McEnelly scored a pair of takedowns in the opening frame and led 6-3 through two periods. He poured it on with three more in the final stanza, moving to 11-0 on the year and 26-0 in his young career. Ten of his 11 wins this year have been by bonus points, including eight wins by tech fall.

Isaiah Salazar made it two in a row with a major decision of his own at 197 pounds. Ranked ninth, Salazar topped No. 22 Camden McDanel, 8-0. Salazar had takedowns in each of the first two periods and added points via escape and riding time.

Minnesota took the lead at 13-9 behind another dominant victory from top-ranked Gable Steveson at heavyweight. Facing No. 24 Harley Andrews, Steveson claimed his fourth tech fall win in as many matches in a 19-4 win (3:32). Seven of Steveson's 19 points came in the opening 20 seconds behind a takedown and four nearfall points. He added three more takedowns en route to his 56th straight win. He's now 89-2 in his career.

Nebraska took the lead back at 125 pounds, 15-13, with No. 7 Caleb Smith topping No. 5 Cooper Flynn, 2-0. Smith rode out Flynn for the second period and added an escape in the third period to get the win and snap Flynn's seven-match win streak.

Much like the opening match at 157 pounds, the 133-tilt between No. 11 Tyler Wells and No. 19 Jacob Van Dee came down to the wire. Van Dee had a 1-0 lead midway through the third period, but Wells' escape evened the match at 1-1. It looked as though they were headed to overtime, but Van Dee scored a takedown in the closing seconds. Minnesota challenged but the call was confirmed and Van Dee prevailed, 4-1, to push the lead to 18-13.

The final top-10 showdown came at 141 pounds between eighth-ranked Vance VomBaur and sixth-ranked Brock Hardy. It was a back-and-forth contest that saw VomBaur leading 4-3 after one period, but Hardy was on top 6-5 through two. Trailing 10-5, VomBaur got an escape in the third period and followed with a takedown to get within 10-9, but Hardy got a reversal and held on for a 12-10 decision to extend the Husker lead

The dual ended at 149 pounds with No. 5 Ridge Lovett shutting out No. 21 Drew Roberts, 5-0.

Minnesota returns to action Sunday as it welcomes No. 13 Michigan to Maturi Pavilion. The match is set to start at 1 p.m. on B1G+.
