STILLWATER – The No. 3 Oklahoma State wrestling team defeated No. 5 NC State, 34-3, at Gallagher-Iba Arena on Monday night to improve to 8-0 on the season. It was the Wolfpack's first loss of the year, dropping to 7-1.

"It's a reflection of the work that we are putting in and the standard that we're trying to wrestle as a program," head coach David Taylor said. "We want our guys to have the reputation that we're going to wrestle hard for seven minutes or whatever it takes."

As they've done all season, the Cowboys dominated through three bonus-point victories and several late match surges. The 31-point win on Monday marked OSU's largest margin of victory over a top-five opponent since it beat No. 3 Michigan State, 39-0, on December 14, 1996, and the third biggest in program history. With another 30-point team performance, the Cowboys have also now surpassed 30 points in each of the first eight duals of a season for the second time in the program's 111-year history, with the other being the first 10 duals in 1987-88.

Now over halfway through the regular season, the scorching Cowboys have beaten their opponents by an average of 30.4, which would rank third best in program history if the season ended today. Meanwhile, the Pokes also handed NC State its worst loss since January 20, 2013.

The dual was originally scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday, but due to travel delays caused by inclement weather, the match was rescheduled for a day later. Despite the late time change, 8,212 fans piled into Gallagher-Iba Arena for its biggest crowd of the season.

NC State got out to a quick lead following No. 11 Vince Robinson's upset over Troy Spratley at 125 pounds, but it didn't take long for the Cowboys to bounce back as 133-pounder Cael Hughes took on two-time All-American and seventh-ranked Kai Orine in just his third career dual start. The match was scoreless heading into the third period when the Stillwater native secured a reversal and put Orine on his back for the pin, sending OSU out front and giving Hughes the highest-ranked win of his young career.

Tagen Jamison followed suit by earning a 21-5 technical fall over Tyler Tracy at 141 pounds. With just four seconds remaining in the bout, Jamison threw Tracy to the mat and clinched five more points for the Cowboys. The win improved Jamison's record to 14-1 on the year, with 10 of those victories coming in bonus-point fashion. Carter Young then earned his fourth ranked win of the season as he defeated No. 33 Koy Buesgens, 5-2.

Caleb Fish took on 2023 All-American Ed Scott at 157 pounds in the tightest match of the night. Down 5-4 with under a minute remaining, Fish escaped and pulled off a seven-point move in the match's final seconds, clinching a 12-5 decision and sending OSU into the break with a firm 17-3 lead.

Coming out of intermission, Cameron Amine recorded the seventh win in his last eight matches as he handled No. 32 Derek Fields, 5-2. At 174 pounds, Dean Hamiti Jr. put a stamp on the dual as he scored a takedown late in the third period to ice an 8-4 win over No. 19 Matty Singleton and clinch the team victory.

Dustin Plott kept the pressure on the Wolfpack at 184 pounds and shut out No. 11 Dylan Fishback with a 5-0 decision. In the 197-pound match, Luke Surber raced out to a quick 6-1 lead in the first period against No. 26 Christian Knop. Surber then kept working as the match went on, grossing 18 points en route to another technical fall.

The night ended with the dual's marquee match between Wyatt Hendrickson and fourth-ranked heavyweight Isaac Trumble, a rematch of the CKLV Invitational finals back in December. Hendrickson got out to an early lead that he would never surrender, as he took the 10-4 decision to keep his perfect season intact and notch the fourth top-five win of his career.

Oklahoma State returns to action this weekend as it hosts No. 22 West Virginia at Gallagher-Iba Arena at 2 p.m.

Staff will be working a lot with SVN after that. I won’t be surprised at all if Van Ness turns that result around

Have they not been working with him already?

I watched ASU/UNI on ESPN+. People who complain about BTN+ have zero perspective. The guy did know wrestling but was not good and the female color commentator clearly knew nothing about wrestling. My favorite was when he said without a doubt the B12 is the premier conference in America because they had 7 teams ranked in the top 25.

Lovett is a guy that scores in bunches when he’s on and can be a tough nut to crack on top and rolling around. I don’t think he is a major type match better than SVN but could beat him again. Also think SVN could win both at B1G and NCAAs.

To get him more ready for Lovett’s style. They’ve got a good track record for turning results around and Van Ness is very talented.

No doubt. Agree 100% with this. A motivated, healthy Lovett is really talented and dangerous. Wrestle him loose like SVN did, and he’ll make you pay dearly.

Maybe it’s better to be a rock solid guy like Kasak against that style.

Wish they hadn’t started at 174 as it took the juice out of the dual. Place would have been rocking after 149 if they hadn’t started started at 125.

I see the Cyclone Open is once again a huge waste of time. They almost cancelled it early in the week, which the have done before.

Their usual response to guys that are better than them is to do nothing and try stealing it late in the third period
I don’t think saying Ridge is better than him is fair. More dangerous? Sure. I didn’t get to watch any wrestling last night so I will have to watch it when I can to see the what, how, when and why of it all.

With that said, the style correction you allude to is spot on. They absolutely adjust to people they lost to before with a huge focus on positional wrestling. That is especially true in neutral. They close off try to beat you down hard on the mat and then catch you late with what they expect to be superior conditioning. Another part of that is the style tries to force the opponent to get impatient and make a mistake by forcing something. Patience is their friend.

Kemerer and Eierman are, in my opinion, prime examples of this.

I think Ridge is better. SVN has an insane pace that almost nobody is able to withstand. Ridge didn’t have any issues, and just has a more diverse skillset. SVN is good enough to beat him, but I would favor Ridge in a rematch.

And it primarily worked since our team was shut out of the training for 4 weeks leading up to postseason. Amazing they are even able to make the finals and when the team title the adversity the team faced.

SVN will be well prepared in a rematch, but think I agree with you here. Should be a good battle.

Lovett is a guy that scores in bunches when he’s on and can be a tough nut to crack on top and rolling around. I don’t think he is a major type match better than SVN but could beat him again. Also think SVN could win both at B1G and NCAAs.
Lovett looked great. SVN was aggressive and initiating from the whistle, but Lovett had the answers for it this time. If he’s at that level in March, he could win.

Exactly, they have gone against him multiple times.
That really isn’t the point. The point is how great their track record is at assessing how and why they lost and making adjustments accordingly. Until/unless they lose to someone they seem to have a style that openly imposes their style and will on someone. However, once beaten, they definitely seem to have a very specific game plan with considerable adjustments being quite visible….

I'm not getting into one of your endless debates. Of course they are going to analyze the match for specific tactical mistakes. They could wrestle again the next day and I could see Van Ness winning even without analyzing anything. They still have more than enough info historical exposure to Lovett that Van Ness was certainly not going in unprepared. Lovett just beat him to the punch in a couple spots.

I wasn’t looking for an endless debate. You simply missed the point. No one is really saying SVN went in blind. He just didn’t go into the match with a plan specific to Lovett.

Like I said before, once they lose to someone, THAT is when they gameplan and the adjustment are almost always VERY visible the next matchup…

You are on crack if you don't think they did any game planning specific to Lovett prior to that match.

I am telling you they wrestle their very open, aggressive style trying to impose that style and will onto their opponents UNTIL/UNLESS they lose. Once that happens the game plan and style changes considerably.

I am not just making this up and I have made it very apparent that I am not a PSU fan. But, that doesn’t mean I don’t pay attention to how good they are at certain things. I would challenge you to go look at the style changes made, in rematches after losses. Then look at rematches after wins. The difference is night and day. This is especially true if the rematch is at NCAA’s…

You literally said he didn't go into the match with a plan specific to Lovett which is BS. I've been on this site for a long ass time. I'm definitely getting old and progressing to the get off my lawn time of my life. I just don't have the desire to rummage through the endless arguments you post on here which you clearly enjoy. I don't really have anything against you but for the sake of no longer having to read your discussions I'm going to make you the first person I have put on ignore. Best of luck to ya.

Your loss!! 😉😆

Oh, and most of the best wrestlers on ANY team go on record as saying they try to wrestle their match vs. a specific match for one opponent. That doesn’t mean they haven’t been scouted for a couple of things they do best, but just that the focus isn’t changing style for that opponent.

PSU is no different, UNLESS they lose. Not a difficult concept to grasp…

Essentially Lovett used the PSU adjustment style you speak of. The problem with the PSU positional approach is they are stalling their ass off and don’t get called for it. Lovett could have been called for stalling in the first period and again riding in the second with his positional approach.
