Good luck to both JRent and Mejia in their search for other places. Both are studs and they will be missed but like everybody has been saying, there is only so many spots and I think they made the right decision. Justin is a very good folkstyle kid but I think JRent is going to hurt us the worst only because I think he was going to grow to 141.

I think some offers were made today to our verbals and both guys didn't cotton to it which is their choice. I think Ramos was a big reason why they wanted to come to Iowa a few years back. Even with Tony leaving, I know of at least one of them that was still on board big time....this was as of 26 June. Plus, he had been in the room a lot and loved being in IC. However, $$$ talks and sometimes there is just not enough to go around and parents and kids have to make a realistic choice.

As I alluded to in another thread that the options for Iowa was to: 1)Secure Lee and make room for some bigger guys...and they may have 2)Keep money set aside to offer said big guys 3)Two guys just simultaneously up and gave up on their Iowa dream

Well, we know its not #3. I know this for sure, at least in one case.

This sucks but its fun watching PSU guys fighting over the scraps. Here are my predictions:

1)Mejia-Fresno State, ASU, UNC
2)JRent-UNC or Illinois, whichever gives him the best offer.

If you think about it, Jack Wagner is competitive with both Renteria and Mejia (I'd bet). I didn't want to say it on here because I know two sets of parents were watching but those questioning whether we could keep all of the littles were right. This is the fruits of being successful and getting the top guys in their weight classes.

$ was probably the biggest issue but also Teasdale is old for his grade and I bet he wants to go right away for the Hawks at 133. As good as Mejia and Renteria our there not beating Lee and Teasdale. So not only were Mejia and Renteria not going to get the $ they want they probably weren't ever going to see the lineup either. I think this is a good move for both kids and they will be 4XAA where every they go. Still sucks though.

Well said chief. I 'm hoping, guessing and believing that TnT and M* have plan. Berge and Warner would be awesome gets to add. That would be Kemerer, Marinelli, Lee, Teasdale, Berge and Warner all in Flo's top 10 p4p!

If Teasdale goes as a true frosh then all will be in the same lineup with eachother for 2 years Kemerer will be a JR when they all break into the lineup. The last 5 on the list will have 3 years together. and the final 4 on the list will be together for all 4 years. Smells like the makings of team titles.

Chief, you think Mejia and JRent had a coordinated effort to announce 30mins in between their decommits?

Not that it matters but interesting timing.

I couldn't disagree more. I think both would have found their way into the lineup at some point of their careers. What really sucks is that I wasn't high on Jrent until the last few weeks. I wish I hadn't watched those recent videos of his matches :D

Don't know. Maybe since Justin went first, JRent saw an opportunity to break it.

I guess we don't know what the issues are. I hope JRent ends up at UNC with Tony. Be a great fit.

Another I'm hearing for Mejia is Utah Valley.

I believe Mejia is very close with Ethen Lofthouse and the lofthous family. So Utah Valley may be a likely destination as well.

I feel bad for these 2 kids,i think both wanted to be iowa wrestlers and money killed their dreams(.i understand I put three kids thru college still paying for that).mr. mejia gave us fair warning when he said top recruits should get 80 percent. i'm sure he wanted to at least have enough left over to come out and watch in person once in a while something i'm wondering about. does iowa offer in state tuition to Illinois kids. I know some states do this for neighboring states. really didn't see Renteria decommiting. that kid reminds me of cory clark the way when he gets in he keeps adjusting until he's got you where he wants you.we will survive and probably thrive, but I am bummed to say the least.

???

Curious what you mean by this. What "scraps" are the PSU guys fighting over? Mejia? JRent? Maybe even another recruit PSU fans seem to like Fix?

Wagner has been doing well and reports are Rathbun has been pretty impressive, throw in Lee and Teasdale and we are looking good. I felt Mejia would leave just because he is not going to be big enough to go past Lee IMO. Renteria I was not sure, I like him a lot and I could see him at 141. Happel is likely a 141 too. Do you now look at Alex Thomsen who is around there. Murin is another guy. Better off using the $$$ on big guys honestly.

I can't say this is a bad thing or a good thing. There is no use tying up money on guys. That's what killed us with Telford Evans Etc class

Mejia- I've never been huge on him. Yes he's a 4xer in Ca which is great. How many elite wins does he have in the last let's say 1.5 years? He's tiny and I would expect him to never see the lineup.

Jrent-this sucks. The kid wrestles every tournament all year round. He looks like he'll end up at 141 also. Right when TR had his press conference I posted wondering if Jrent stays on. I'd bet the farm he goes to Unc.

41 is a need now. We have Turk and Happel for now. Glosser may be an option also.

Chief is just trying to rally his buddies in here after a Tough night. Shhh, Teasdale spending time hanging out with Nickal and Nolf this summer.

Well that would certainly be a kick to the junk, but I'm guessing every young guns kid is hanging out with those two.

Honestly am not surprised Meija moved on. Of your 4 commits, I thought he was the most likely to decommit mainly due to his summer/tournament resume. If anyone was going to come up short on money, it would be him on that account. Am mildly surprised by Renteria, but with young kids, the unexpected is the only thing you can count on.

I'm just waiting for the apologies. I was mocked and called "troll" for saying that there were too many recruits at the low weights. Something had to give and it just did. The grand "plan" blew up.

Are you sure this had anything to do with money or spots, at least in one recruit's case?

Did you just ask for an apology on a message board?

Honestly, I don't think the Grand Plan has blown up. If anything, it's falling into place.
No disrespect to Justin and Jason, but Lee was the #1 goal in this class. Justin and Jason were great consolation prizes if Iowa couldn't land Lee.
Iowa wouldn't have "lessened" the money on either of these two if they didn't think they had a REALLY good chance at landing Warner / Berge / (insert upper weight stud here).
Our lightweights are in great shape for years to come and the focus needed to switch to landing an elite upper weight.
I wish nothing but the best for Mejia and Renteria as I really became fans of them over the past couple years.

I caught a Cali high school dual last season. The announcer reported that Justin's "hobby," was studying for English class. So I'm guessing he's either a reel good student or playing catch up.

I wouldn't expect an apology from anyone who called me "troll" or worse for bringing up an obvious point - that you wouldn't keep all those guys at the lower weights - because that's not the way you as a group roll. Look at the quick turnaround here - the two guys go from being prize recruits to consolation prizes in case you didn't land Lee in a flash second.

The posts here make it seem like the Brands are scrambling around without a clue in developing their program. "Let's get a bunch of lightweights lined up. If it's too many, we'll just offer some of them no money. Maybe then they will decommit and we can line up some upper weights." Really, that's how they are running their program? It sounds like amateur hour.

I mean, I was assured in no uncertain terms by lots and lots of people here that Iowa was keeping all these lightweights and ridiculed for suggesting some of them would not wind up at Iowa. I don't think anyone even allowed a remote possibility that any of the recruits would be lost. Oops. Guess what. Egg on a lot of faces, but the eggfaces will pretend it's not there.

I just hope our coaching staff can replace these 2 with equal or better talent and promise. What hurts is to lose such highly ranked kids and then replace them with guys that will battle for 4 years to see the lineup.... I hope we can land Berge or Warner now...

I'm sad how it all went down for Justin and Jason, but at least now they can go into the process fresh and at a time they can actually know what kind of scholarship a school will offer. I've enjoyed following their careers to this point and will probably continue to do so. The way they handled it shows the kind of character they have.

If you lived in reality you would realize everyone on here new there was a possibility of losing 1 or 2 lightweights. Notice how nobody has ill will towards J+J and everyone is actually pretty confident that the staff is going to keep the good news rolling. I expect November to cap off a monster class. Get your sleep in now because you will be back to worrying about us in a couple of months.

Listen to yourself. What were we supposed to say, "We have Spencer and Gavin, everybody else can go F-off?"...especially when their families read these threads?

Then we could hear the long lectures about how Hawk fan loyalty only extends to the latest and greatest recruit...any way it went, we were screwed. BTW, any arguments I made were not for your eyes but were defending why they should stay versus being inundated by opposing fans saying they should leave...in case Jaysdad or anybody else was paying attention.

The thing we can learn form this is that kids have unrealistic and optimistic outlooks on life at times. Sure those kids wanted to go to Iowa and because they wanted it to work out, they thought everything would just work out fine. They probably were all excited and in a moment of clarity proclaimed they were going to be Hawks.
The real world doesn't always work out perfectly and things change. I agree with the many others that have said it is foolish for freshman and sophomores to be saying where they will be going to school. This shows why.

Either way. Best of luck to the boys and to the programs who land them.

I did chuckle a bit at some of the posts out here -- it was pretty clear that one or two of the smaller guys were going to have to bail, but almost everybody here has been very careful not to say it out loud, lest any of the kids start to feel less than welcome. I suspect these guys or their parents read these boards, and hopefully they'll see that everybody understands their situation, is sorry to see them go, and wishes them the best of luck.
