Paid off refs

Not really. Look at our losses. Look at the teams we struggle against. Look at our 3 pt D — it’s atrocious. Why? Because we are limited athletically. Most teams are significantly faster than Iowa.

How can anyone look at what Illinois did to us in transition last night and say we are just as fast. That’s idiotic.

I agree that Iowa is less athletic than some other teams, particularly Indiana and Illinois. I do not agree that Iowa has no one athletic enough to play in the Big10, which is the original post to which I was responding. Iowa is 12-4 right now with six Big10 wins. Iowa is 4-2 against teams in the Top 25 when they played the game. This does not happen if the roster is devoid of athleticism.

Let's be honest, if Nunge or Connor did that same thing just a little bit slower and clumsier the ref would've blown his whistle so hard it would've flown out of his mouth and bounced off his chest.

Luka Garza is highly regarded for many things. Athleticism is not one of them. Perhaps you should examine your own mental faculties before you sound off about someone else's.
Guess it depends on ones definition of athleticism. His abilities around the basket with his offense and rebounding numbers tells me that he is athletic. He dominates many with his abilities. Speed and jumping ability isn’t necessarily a requisite for athleticism.

Let me get this straight. You are insulting people and telling them they are stupid for saying the refs called a crap game and using a call the refs got wrong as an example? OK, buddy.
It’s all good. ChiDoc’s wife had him sleeping on the couch again last night so he figured he’d log on to Hawkeye Report and take it out on emotional (and in my case, also drunk) fans after a tough loss

Iowa got the short end of the stick from the officials, but I have seen a lot worse in the B1G on the road. There were a few awful calls/non-calls, like the travel, which I wondered whether I had seen it correctly at the time. The goal tend call was a bad break, but unfortunately was the proper ruling after the mistake. The last two fouls on Luka were technically "fouls", but given the lack of calls the other way, were pretty weak. That said, Illannoy played very well, and it is time for the Hawks to come back with a couple of strong games next week.

This was Luka's 4th foul.

Game changer.

Watch:

worst call of the game in my opinion. There was a couple really bad ones but this one was truly pathetic. There is that one ref...Kevin something maybe? He absolutely hates Iowa from what i can tell. This isn't the first time I've seen that tool make some really bad calls against Iowa. He truly sucks....

I was watching the replay of the 1989 Illinois @ Iowa game yesterday with Vitale doing the color. He went off on a minute spiel about how bad the refs in the B1G were compared to other conferences and how the level of players and coaching were all brought down by the incompetence of the officials. 1989!
The legacy continues.

Paul Szelc is probably who you are referring to. He’s the little clean cut white dude, probably in his young 50’s.

Larry Scrote is the shorter pudgy one.

DJ Carstensen is the taller bald one.

When the travel happened, like you I thought I must have missed a dribble or something. But nope.

Yep! That's the dude Mr Perfect Hair.....that guy sucks as a Ref. Everytime he works an Iowa game we get bent over....terrible official.

Before you touch the arrow to play the video, Luka already has a grip on Kofi’s arm. Then a push in back, then the thigh to the backside. The older I get, the less I blame the refs. When I’m 6 feet under I’ll never complain again.

It was a WEAK call.. From watching Garza get mugged all night, that was NOTHING. And it appeared the whistle blew after that anyway.

After the IU game, someone asked what Iowa’s record was with him as an official. I thought that was a good question.

I wonder how many times that could have been called on both players up to that point. Neither player would have seen halftime if so.

Did you happen to watch the beating Kofi was giving Nunge when Jack was fronting him on the defensive end? If you’re going to let the the big boys play then let them play.

Right after that call (Garza’s 4th), Cmac gets absolutely clobbered while driving.... and crickets from the officials.

People who pretend that officiating cant influence outcomes, have their heads buried in the sand.

I hate use bad officiating as a excuse but I do think some of them enjoy being the difference.

you forgot the 3 JW was grabbed on his off arm towards the end of the game.

We don’t benefit from it like other B1G teams IMO.

Also I think it’s obvious that it SHOULDN’T be like that, no? The officiating should be fair for both the home and road teams. Clearly isn’t the case in the B1G.
Iowa has made more free throws than their opponents have shot. Clearly, Iowa isn’t getting screwed on foul calls. Big Ten rivals would tell you that Garza gets more calls than anyone (whether it’s true or not).

Glad you mentioned that. Iowa was 3-6 yesterday in FTs. Illinois was 14-17. A little odd when Iowa makes more FT than their opp attempts. Even factoring in two front end 1-1 misses, that’s 8 FT. Strange for a team that makes more than their opponent attempts. I’m sure swallowing the whistle in the last 10 minutes had absolutely nothing to do with it.

Does Garza get more calls than most? Probably. Not because of favoritism, but more through pure volume of plays being ran through Garza. I can name at least 10 games between this year and last where Garza has left the game bloodied. Guess how many of those injuries warranted a foul according to the officials? If you guessed zero, you’d be correct.

Illinois plays very physical defense, and they were called for 1 foul in the last 13 minutes of the game. Just one. 13 minutes

Very proud of the Illini for that. Fran said it was 100% his own fault that Garza didn't get more free throws.

Lol not even close. You think lukas 3rd and 4th fouls were legit? The goaltend call was legit? C’mon
I do not believe the refs were paid off, but to say Iowa has no B10 quickness or athleticism is idiotic. This was a back and forth game between two top ten teams according to Kenpom where Iowa came up short on the road. It happens. I still believe this team with no quickness or athleticism is going to rebound and somehow compete the rest of the season. If you are right, there is no reason for any of us to watch the rest of the season.
its not that we dont have any athleticism , we dont have what ill has or some of the other teams . we do have guys that have high BBall IQS ( although not perfect ) . we have garza who will out work anyone . our best ATHLETES are young and on the bench . lukas 3rd foul was legit , not straight up till after the contact and the fourth no way of knowing for sure because he is playing behind koki who is directly in front of us , we had no angle on the play . we lost , ill is a good team or can be just like indiana , by the end of the season indiana will not seem like a bad loss .
