Pat Flanagan Open

Paddock being able to get 1st will be about the only bright spot today if he does it. Pretty damn ugly day of wrestling. Logan Thomsen and Glosser as well going for 1st.

Last match, got away in OT and taken down at the buzzer with a blast double.

To me, Brody looks a little sluggish. Guys getting to his legs with great ease. Spending most of his time hopping on one leg trying to avoid the takedown. Shot about one time in the last two matches. On top, he put a leg in and got sloppy/loose and got reversed numerous times.

On bottom, just not exploding out. Tired? Lack of energy?

Looked a bit gassed in his last match, but not greatly so. Looks to me like it is more lack of energy/explosiveness that is the issue - not endurance.

Just my impression from watching. Could be way off

Classic symptoms of too much weight cut.

Champs: Only 2
1st Place Match - Jaden Glosser (Iowa) won by decision over Mason Bohm (Platteville) (Dec 5-1)
1st Place Match - Burke Paddock (Iowa) won by decision over Isaiah Patton (Northern Iowa) (Dec 6-2)

5th Place Match - Scott Arneson (Platteville) won by forfeit over Brody Grothus (Iowa) (FF)

A little too early to hit the panic button with Brody, several things at play here. Making the cut WHILE rehabbing is, I'm sure, not the most ideal nor easiest thing to do. His first live go's this year vs guys who have been at full strength, probably since October. He's always been a guy that has held on a half a second too long on top, and I'm sure strength and/or energy deficits aren't helping things. Lets see where he is a month from now.

BTW, looked like Brody FF his last match not because of a significant injury.

Afterwards, he was sitting along the wall eating a big box of Krispy Kreme's and Barry Davis was there consoling him.

Not sure what to make of Brody's performance today. He really didn't look as bad as the results would suggest.

Also not sure if the results were due to the weight cut, lack of live "under the lights" wrestling, or just "Bad Brody" showing up today. Brody has been an up and down wrestler.

Two years ago at 149, he was happy and healthy and well fed and had some great matches, but when "Bad Brody" showed up, he had matches just like today. He let guys to his legs, didn't shoot, tried to go upper body throws way to often, got sloppy on top, and just didn't seem to get things going. He could come back next week and be a world beater. Just don't know what is happening with him. Maybe Willie can enlighten us.

Don't give up on Brody or write him off just yet. A disappointing performance today for sure, but better things are hopefully in store.

BTW, just kidding about the Krispy Kreme/Barry Davis story (although Barry was there).

I'm not giving up on Brody. I've always been a fan of his. He's a great kid and good wrestler. Some body once said "destiny has a way of finding you." He'll get it figured out. He's too smart not to.

Does this mean that we shouldn't keep posting on his 20 page thread, and just let it die? Hope not, I've been padding my post count! I heard he has the flu, and he has a new girlfriend so maybe a little to much sex, that will take the legs right out from you.

One bad tournament after sitting out for a year, after rehab of a shoulder injury, after cutting to a new weight class, and after only a truncated period of training full time in the room. On the other hand, he has career wins over Habat, Kindig, Sorenson, Tshirt, and Grajales. There are too many open variables as to why he might have struggled today. Many of the possible reasons are fixable with time. Take a deep breath and let's see where BG is in 3-4 weeks.

I hope he can get it together but it is a long ways from what we have today to being a factor at the NCAAs.

Yeah, the early result sucks, but the season ends in March. I'll wait and see where he's at then. Not how you start, it's how you finish. I'm rarely an optimist, but I think he'll be just fine in the end.

At least somebody's getting some, eh Mike? Sheep don't count btw.

If I recall, he had some bad matches to begin last season against "lesser" competition. Like Sloe, I'll wait until the B1G to pass judgement.

It means you need to work on that cut down to 141, my friend.
