Patrick McCaffery #22 - Sacred Number, Special Significance

What a great thing that Bill did, what Patrick does for his friend. Love all of this.

Thanks, OP. That's one of the finest stories I've read for a long time. And I know it's silly to even think it, but the last time Bill Seaberg wore that #22 for the Hawkeyes was in the national title game. Wouldn't THAT be some story too . . .

That was a good read. Well done by Bill Seaberg and Patrick. Thoughts & Prayers to Austin's family. I didn't know that until I just read this.

1) Yeah, don’t think Fran had any idea of going to Arkansas.

2) Yes, Patrick is definitely playing in 2019.

Great story. Patrick and Connor both have "22" tattoos, and it's really cool to learn more about what it means. Good on Seabring for allowing Pat to wear #22.

Austin was an awesome kid. The way he battled that awful disease while being positive was incredible to see. Often times when he would get terrible news he would just be thankful for what he had and the friends he was with. He has inspired so many in the Iowa City area. Austin's family is awesome and if you ever get a chance to hear his father speak... do it.

Sharm was great too. When I was 10-12 I started writing fan letters to sharm. Each away game he would write back with the hotel stationary where they were staying. I got dozens and dozens of letters from him— when I got older I marveled that a college kid would do this. He took me down into the locker room after several games and even drove to Williamsburg to visit me one Sunday.

Nice story. Thanks for that. I like #22 as well. I was stationed at Submarine Base New London in the mid '70's and became a big Boston Bruins fan. Fave player was #22 Brad Park, a high scoring defenseman. I played on a league softball team there and wore #22.

Why go through all that trouble when Fran is taking the Arkansas job, and his sons with him? I think it is safe to say Fran is staying.

A bit of trivia for younger Hawkeye fans. The two stars of the San Francisco team that beat the Hawkeyes that year were Bill Russell and K. C. Jones, who went on to win multiple championships with the Boston Celtics.
