Patrick McCaffery: "Ending the stigma is really important."

People who believe preposterous things despite clearly demonstrable facts proving otherwise need help. I don’t know why anyone would dispute that.

The whole “opinion” thing is just a cop out. Opinions aren’t needed when there are facts. People with Tourette syndrome experience tics. That is a fact. Someone expressing an “opinion” that tics aren’t real despite there literally being millions of people experiencing tics is out of touch with reality.

People who destroy their life over their QAnon beliefs are just expressing their “opinion.” Should they not get help because what they’re doing is just based on an “opinion?”
Wow, holy fvcking shit.

Do you seriously think thats what I was saying?

Thats so wildly off base that I feel like you can't possibly be that stupid or dishonest.

Talk about cognitive dissonance.

I said tics and multiple personalities developed by teenagers from watching tic tock videos aren’t real.

Qanon? Um...excuse me?

You have only two choices now.

You can back that up with something immediately, or don't and admitt that by not doing so you are a liar.

You are outing yourself as both a liar and an imbecile.

Can of worms here. You know you're just going to get a bunch of angry responses but I agree.

Aside from the odd social cache of having some kind of "thing" (terretts is in now apparently) theres an interesting side effect of living in a postmodern society with no real challenges, at least compared to any other time in human history.

Living difficulty free and mostly purpose free lives while fake socializing online is apparently terrible for mental health.

No turning back now though.
Bullshot. I work my ass off and I am still nuttier than a squirrel turd.

…and yes, I am fired up about this subject.

A family member of mine nearly lost his life because of mental health issues. The first sign of problems was him rambling on about things that were pretty obviously not in any way rooted in reality.

Luckily I was able to see what was going on and guide him into getting the help he needed. He’s doing much better now.

With all the misinformation available on the internet and on cable “news” it’s shockingly easy for people to get caught in a whirlpool of delusional thinking. It’s not something to take lightly.
Next time before you go off the emotional deep end lashing out like a child try articulating a defense of your position.

By doing so I could have explained to you that you did not understand what I was saying and you could have avoided embarrassing yourself.

You literally wrote the following:

“Kids developing tics, multiple personalities and gender dysphoria (spell checked that one just for you)is not real.”

You wrote nothing whatsoever about TikTok or any other social media in that post.

I specifically referenced tick tock videos in the same sentence in regards to this multiple times in this thread.

Here’s the bottom line: The number of people faking these conditions for social media clout is so statistically insignificant relative to the number of people actually dealing them as to be de minimis.

So it raises the question: why are you so obsessed with talking about people faking these conditions IN A THREAD ABOUT PROMOTING MENTAL HEALTH made during Mental Health Awareness Month?

I wasn't. I was trying to make a point about social media being toxic and kids spending ridiculous amounts of time on there because they don't have to do anything anymore.

Then you seized on an irrelevant spelling error and it went downhill from there.

Have you ever thought that maybe not everyone needs to hear your opinion all the time? Sometimes the appropriate thing to do is zip it and keep it to yourself. Good for Patrick, I commend him.

Anxiety is oppressive and wide spread, no I’m not “woke” or an enabler, but it’s a problem, and one that I am a huge advocate of. I’ve taken Zoloft for 23 years and mental health issues are extremely widespread, in all honesty we all deal with them, and I repeat “all deal with them” and yes, I believe it’s over done as an excuse. And yes, I’m not in love with a diagnosis of “ADHD“ because, quite frankly, I am too old to have been diagnosed and I probably have it with that said it’s not an excuse, but it’s a bitch dealing with stressful anxiety!

I personally feel like it has made me brighter, smarter, and more able to deal with life, but there are times when it sneaks up on you and grabs you by the throat!

If you don’t truly understand it and have a negative opinion, then you’re a ****ing idiot!

I seized on the fact that you were talking out your ass about things you clearly don’t understand in a thread where doing so was completely inappropriate and disrespectful.

Sounds like you should stop worrying about others having “mostly purpose free lives” and concern yourself with finding better purposes for yours.

No, you seized on a spelling error because what I said made you upset because you thought I was insulting Patrick. I was not.

Part of the reason you were so angry is because you were clearly confused.

Now you're trying to cover for the fact that you clearly did not grasp what was going on by claiming that it was inappropriate or disrespectful.

Then you just started blatantly lying.

You're in no position to give advice on anything.

When it became public knowledge in 2014 that Patrick had cancer, did you go online to talk about people faking a cancer diagnosis?

So basically anyone who thinks differently than you has a mental issue and needs help.

Anxiety is a real problem that too many people blow off until it happens to them. It’s not a young or old issue. Let’s not pretend otherwise.,
Nobody said it wasn’t real, but there are plenty of people out there who use it as a crutch, and that’s offensive to those who have it and to those of us who realize they are pretending to have it because they suck at life.

Anyone who doesn’t believe in clearly observable facts needs help.
Without tracking the argument, I agree that the recent popularity of "alternative facts" (a nice term for made up crap) is difficult to understand. Mental illness is very real, but our limited understanding of the brain, although improving, makes it hard to "fix". Science is real. Communications about science are not always accurate.

Agreed. We also have a lot of people who struggle to differentiate between anecdotes and real data.

There are? Not in my experience. I’ve never heard my colleagues admit to anxiety issues and I work in a very stressful occupation.

Just keep in mind that you're facts might not be the real facts. You seem to be just as extreme as the people you think need help.
There is a difference between observable facts, like real science, and alternative facts that are just opinion, or worse, made up horse poop. Social media and even some "news" sources have made it difficult for many to distinguish between the two.

There’s no such thing as “real facts.” There are just facts and non-facts.

If you think I’m extreme for believing in facts, what does that say about you?

Patrick has had some tough obstacles to overcome ,I think it is worse because he is in the Iowa basketball fishbowl . I hope that is able to overcome these challenges and have a successful future.

Whats facts are in question here exactly? Explain please.

We've already established that your characterization of my argument was totally inaccurate. That is a fact.

You are now continuing to act as though your mischaracterization of my argument is real when it is not. Thats called a straw man.

You also lied about me by making a Qanon reference. That is also a fact to which you have admitted to by default by not producing any evidence to back that statement up.

You can disagree with my opinions, you can dislike my opinions but you don't get to intentionally misrepresent them.

I totally agree. The problem with chaneccooms is that he felt anyone who thinks differently than him is crazy.

Just because you think something is a fact doesn’t make it a fact. Now that statement was a fact.

Playing basketball and attending school is really important.
