At first I didn't like seeing Iowa mentioned for the Peach Bowl or the predictions for it. However, the more I think about it I do. When Iowa loses to MSU on Saturday, I want the Peach Bowl! I say this because think about how many offers Iowa has extended down in Georgia lately? This is the perfect opportunity to play down there and maybe have a few of these guys come watch our program. We can say to them "hey we are in a big time bowl in your home state and you'll have the chance to play Florida State and beat them".

Thoughts?

I'd like to see Iowa play a middle of the road NFL team in a bowl game. Want to see how we stack up. So you think we would benefit from playing the Falcons?

GTFO. I'd be ok with a Peach Bowl bid because I could go, but I'm not trading a playoff bid for a few GA HS kids.

Why would a 12-1 ( if that was to happen) Iowa end up in the Peach Bowl ? I guess I am missing something. The Peach isn't a top 4 bowl ..right? I sort of thought after beating us Friday you had locked at least the Rose

It is now one of the big six: Rose, Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, Cotton, Peach. It's a new world and the Peach is now part of it.

I lived in Georgia for 25 years and all it does is freakin' rains all winter. If those kids want to come to Iowa, they don't want to play a consolation game in their backyard. They want to see the world! GO WEST YOUNG MAN! And we aren't gonna lose to MSU! We've pretty much had their number in recent years despite their lofty records. Dantonio is an Iowa wannabe and has a 3-4, soon to be 3-5 record vs. the Hawks. We got da mojo, don't ya know.

There are two kinds of Bowls: Exciting Bowls and skim milk Bowls. The Peach Bowl is skim milk. We went there the year after Hayden took us to the first Rose Bowl in 22 years. Even Iowa State has been to the Peach.

You do realize that the Peach is now one of what would be the equivalent of a "BCS" bowl? The Fiesta used to be a second tier bowl at one time. The Cotton was a huge bowl, then became a second tier bowl on par with the Outback, and is now major bowl again. The Peach is now in a rotation that includes the Rose.

Your perception of the Peach is going to change. This isn't your father's Peach bowl.

no, ohio st is locked in rose. the rose will take the higher ranked team, and either way, whomever wins and loses on Saturday, the losing team shall be knocked down lower than ohio st, this is just a lock because of the corrupt way of doing things nowadays

Plus the Fiesta Bowl would absolutely love to snap us up. We've got quite a few Hawk fans down in the desert, and they would travel to the game in droves. I don't think we will have to worry about the Peach bowl being an option. ESPECIALLY since like people have said before, we're going to win anyways, and then it's onto Dallas most likely :)

My thoughts:
1. You are a moron
2. See #1

Ol' Doodle has been reticent to post this because it may sound like sour grapes in advance. But since the Peach Bowl keeps gaining steam as a possible destination for the Hawks in the gut wrenching circumstance where we lose the game on Saturday, Doodle figures it needs to be said.

This whole Peach Bowl thing is a great case study in Perception vs. Reality. The current reality is that yes, the Peach Bowl is considered one of the "elite" New Years 6 Bowls. It is officially in the rotation for the playoff semifinals. If we go to the Peach, obviously Doodle hopes we beat the snot out of whomever we face, and bring home the hardware.

That having been said, while the Peach may technically be considered in the same category as the Rose, Sugar, Orange, Cotton, and Fiesta this year, in terms of prestige and history, the Peach isn't even in the same GALAXY as the others.

Here's a little food for thought for those who think the Peach Bowl is just as good as the Rose or Fiesta (the other two likely destinations for the Hawks should they not beat MSU):
  • Next time the Peach crowns a national champion will be the first time.
  • Next time the Peach hosts an undefeated team will be the first time.
  • Next time the Peach hosts a Power 5 conference champion will be the first time.
  • Next time the Peach hosts a Top 5 matchup will be the first time.
  • Next time the Peach hosts a Top 10 matchup will be only the third time.
In the last 8 years, the highest viewership for a Peach Bowl was 2013 (Texas A&M vs. Duke) with 8.7 million. By comparison, with over 20 million viewers, the 2011 Rose Bowl, which was not for the BCS title (TCU v. Wisky), ranks as one of the 10 most watched programs of ANY KIND in the entire history of cable television.

So they can characterize it however they want...but Chick-Fil-A writing a check and forcing the insertion of the Peach into the exclusive club of historically elite New Years Bowls does not instantly make the Peach into a historically elite New Years bowl.

Despite the amount of money being thrown at it, the Peach is still considered by most people to be historically a mid-major bowl on the same level as the Outback, Holiday, and Alamo. No amount of money is going to permanently erase the past 47 years and suddenly vault the Peach to being "appointment television" the way the Rose, Orange, Fiesta, etc. have been for many, many decades.

Think about it this way....since they apparently have to have 6 bowls in this rotation, can you imagine a scenario where there will EVER be a "New Years 6" that doesn't include the Rose, Sugar, Cotton, Fiesta, and Orange? Now...can you envision a time in the future where the PEACH is not in that mix? Envisioning it doesn't even really require that much effort. 20 years from now we can all explain how, "Ummm...you know, that one year...uhh...like....the Peach Bowl was considered, you know, to be one of the good bowls...and junk."

When you see a Rose, Sugar, Orange, Cotton or Fiesta.....no explanation necessary.

But after all of this has been said, for those of you still willing to completely suspend disbelief and pretend the Peach is every bit the equal of the Fiesta, Rose, Orange, et.al....ask yourself this; if the winningest single-season team in Iowa Football history ends up going to the Peach Bowl...would you pay StubHub prices in order to be sure you could attend? Would you do so if it was the Rose Bowl?

If Iowa goes to and wins the Peach Bowl...on your next trip to Kinnick will you feel compelled to stop by the new Iowa Football complex and race to the trophy case so you can get a selfie with the "coveted" Peach Bowl trophy?

Yeah.........Doodle didn't think so.

Still don't understand? That's okay. Some people are visual learners. Here's a video that may help.

I have sour grapes in advance because I miss the old days, we should be just waiting to be in the rose period, no playoffs, no big ten champ, we should be big ten champs. oh well, this isn't 1985

The Peach would be a massive disappointment and Iowa fans would not travel well to that game. They could spin it however they want....Who wants to go to a bowl game in a dome in Atlanta? Almost no one.

The first option is winning vs MSU and going to the playoff, #2 is the Rose Bowl and #3 is Fiesta. Anything below that is a major disappointment.

Doodle, you hit it out of the park and explained it beautifully. It would be a damn shame if this record breaking Iowa team landed in the Peach pretender.

I get your point, but things change. The "good ol' days" when conference alignment dictated post-season matchups instead of trying to crown a champion is gone. It's not 1985 anymore.

I look at it this way. In any season of this new College Football Playoff world, my wish list goes this way:

1. Iowa in the playoff
2. Iowa in one of the non-playoff "New Year's 6" bowls
3. In a warm weather bowl somewhere
4. In a bowl

Atlanta isn't Pasadena, Miami, NOLA or Phoenix, but it's a "New Year's 6". Heck, you put the Cotton in the good category, but it's been a pretty minor bowl for more than a decade and it's in Dallas. Have you been to Dallas in January? Give me Atlanta.

I do think the Peach is the longest shot. Obviously, a win Saturday puts Iowa in the playoff. If MSU wins, there are still scenarios for OSU to make the playoffs as a 2nd B1G team. If that happens, it's Iowa to the Rose. If not, then I think it's probably more likely that the committee puts us in the Fiesta against Notre Dame. Peach comes last.....but it's not an insult this year, it's one of the top bowls.

Peach (Chick-fil-a) has been kind of a big deal the past several years -- very high up as far as payout, and I believe they've had primetime on New Year's Eve to themselves several times. The tie-in with the ACC has hurt them, as far as we care in the Midwest.

After the year we've had, it would be a shame for fans to get pissy about any bowl (as long as it is a New Year's Six). We should celebrate the season and come in droves regardless of where it is or the opponent!

I just can't see Iowa fans going in big numbers to a dome game in Atlanta vs. an ACC team. Barta will spin it hard, but putting lipstick on a pig won't make it more exciting.

I was getting worried. Make room in that permanent trophy case. Good season Sparty, better luck next year!

Once the Peach Bowl hosts a national semifinal (next year) and opens their new stadium (in 2 years) then Peach might feel like a bigger deal.

I can't imagine the committee would put us in Peach against AAC Houston or Temple, unless they're willing to just write off the TV ratings for that game in order to get two Big Name schools together in Fiesta. Maybe I'm wrong, but wouldn't they want to have one of FSU and ND in each of the noon games on the 31st and 1st? Or do they figure no one's watching at noon on the 31st anyway since it's not a holiday, and stick there two most unpopular teams in that timeslot? Was the Peach at noon on the 31st last year? Was that TCU and Ole Miss?
