Time for this to stop... I heard so many people at the arena last night so focused on hating Penn State, that they barely even took the time to enjoy Clark's amazing victory. In my opinion sports are much more fun when you focus your energy on rooting for your own team rather than rooting against another team. We are Iowa Wrestling fans so let's root for Iowa wrestlers, and not waste our time and energy hating Penn State wrestlers...

Speaking as a Penn State fan, for those of us who love the sport (any sport), it is also time to appreciate excellence in other teams and athletes. Clark is a guy any wrestling fan should honor, regardless of what school they are from.

Totally agree. I stood up and clapped for all of the NCAA champions regardless of who they are or who they wrestle for. It's a great accomplishment to win an NCAA title.

It's a two way street.

As hawk fans we can respect what PSU did. But we sure ain't gonna lick their boots nor should we. We have to retain our self respect.

I like great Wrestling & there was a lot of great Wrestling last night.

At some point however, PSU will stop being cute & will be polarizing. For everyone that enjoys Mark Hall posing after his win, there will be another that thinks a 22 yo should know better. Over time, & after many wins, PSU will become loathed by many similar to the Yankees or Patriots or GASP the Hawks. This is the natural evolution between winning & fandom.

Chalk. Was the hatred just from Iowa fans or all the other fans' teams in the arena toward Penn State. I would be shocked to hear otherwise. As far as the whole arena, we all know of whom the hatred is for.

I'm sure it was from everyone not just Iowa fans. But I was sitting in an Iowa section so I am mostly referring to Iowa fans. Of course all fans have some natural tendency to root against winning teams, so I'm not in anyway saying that this is exclusively an Iowa problem.

Agreed, and going forward we need to focus our hatred on the Pokes....I kid, I kid.

In all seriousness, wrestling is the only sport that I don't hate some team or individuals. In baseball I hate the Yanks, in football I hate the Bears and Packers and so on. There are a lot of good kids I enjoy watching wrestling outside of the Hawks. The smile on Joseph's face last night while laying on his back after his pin was priceless. College wrestlers spend a large amount of their time working on their craft, and I respect that.

And the flip of that is, even though my guy won, the look on the face of Martinez was painful to watch.

I don't see why the hatred for Penn State (even though I'm not a fan). If anything we need to appreciate what Cael has done with that program and start doing some of the same shit. Hats off to Cael and company for recruiting and training hungry kids who have the focus, drive and tenacity to take it all the way. The rest of us (all the other power wrestling schools) better wake the hell up or PSU will win 7 of 10 next year. Time to send some spies to Cael's training sessions and see what he's doing that we're not.

Don't be haters...be MF's who find out what they're doing right and we're wrong...and then start fixing the problems. There is absolutely no reason guys like Sammy, Gilman, Telford, Stache couldn't have won it all. Again, maybe it's time to stop hating and to start finding out what the f they're doing right and we're doing wrong. And I think any thoughts of Tom or Terry leaving is pure BS...we just need to tweak a tad to get us to the next level.

Finally...so happy for Cory Clark (and mom). Watching him win it all actually made me cry -- pure f**king guts and determination...love that kid!!

The hate of some isn't necessarily for the PSU wrestling program, but the institution itself for what happened. Some is for some PSU fans who tend to be sore winners and think they need to come here to prove something. Many respect the PSU wrestling program, but respect doesn't mean like. And for those saying stop, stop telling others what to do.

We don't hate you. Why would you think that?

Pretty much this. I can respect Cael and their wrestlers, doesn't mean I have to like them. This may be beating a dead horse, but the whole PSU institution will forever be tainted in my eyes. I can't see myself ever rooting for them in any sport.

Some of their wrestling fans (LemonPie, TBar) I absolutely loathe though.

I have yet to see any wrestling fan from any school who wasn't extremely happy for Clark.

I think it's just sports. When there is a dynasty, there is a natural tendency to tire of that team and there will be a lot of haters. It happened to Iowa wrestling in the past and to the Yankees, Patriots, Bulls, etc.

Agree Nitt, I think we can consider it a fact.

When it comes to sports I think there is fine line between hate and respect. At least for me. Hate may be too strong: irritating, annoying, wearing me thin...etc :)

I don't think anyone actually hated Iowa wrestlers during that 25 year run of excellence, but maybe our huge fan base? Sure

I can't imagine hating on a kid for busting his ass his whole life to end up being one of the best in the country?

I don't hate PSU at all. But I HATE losing to them. But I have felt the same way with OSU too and even Minny as well

With all that said, I respect excellence, which it pains me to say, is what PSU is putting on the mat right now

This is no different than the hatred of Iowa during Dan's run of 15 National Championships. Iowa was the team they loved to hate.

At NCAAs I always sit in mixed sections with fans and wrestlers from various schools -- when they find out I'm a Hawk fan they don't hesitate to voice their strong dislike for Iowa wrestlers nd even me, though I usually sit there quietly - I get all kinds of insults and snide remarks - whatever, doesn't bother me. To me there's big difference between rooting against a team (I definitely do against PSU) and displaying personal disrespect and hatred, which seems to be so common in our society nowadays.

And they still love to hate, even though we've dropped back to the pack somewhat. PSU hasn't yet supplanted the Hawks in that area, maybe they never will. I like that we still have that huge target on our backs. Is there a stronger brand (pun intended) than that black and gold singlet? No way. The white belts are making ground, but not there yet.

There are going to be personalities and actions that stir hostel emotions. Bo putting his hand up to his ear after pinning Brooks at Carver was one of those moments that frosted me. But there is absolutely nothing I could do about it. He earned the right to do that. Was it right to do that? Not in my eyes, but I'm kind of a keep your mouth shut and take care of business kind of guy. I wasn't always that way. It took me three tries to win a world title in my chosen field. I can honestly say that not winning created far more growth than winning.
I always watch and see how a guy handles the handshake. Last year when Gilman stuck NATO, I gained a respect for Nathan on how he handled his loss. Before that, I had hated him for the way he ran from Gilman at the B10 the previous year. Some people use hate to fuel a fire within them, I am of the belief that how you deal with adversity (failure) is the true mark of maturity. This goes for athletes as well as fans.
The big question for me is this: are we going to grow our young studs up to beat the two and even three time champs that Penn. St. will have in a couple years? Can we do what they did? Focus on our own business and embrace the incredible challenge the lions have set before us. Oh, and have fun as athletes and fans.

All of PSU guys came to wrestle last night. I'm more upset that Joseph and Hall even made the finals because Massa and Zahid were the better wrestlers and were the more active wrestlers in their respective matches. The refs gifted those to PSU but I don't fault the PSU wrestlers for that. Congrats to them for their titles. I think there's a difference between hate and being disgusted that they even had the opportunity.

Before PSU if we lost it was to oklahoma state. I had no respect for the cowboys when our opponent was backing off the mat the entire match. I want nothing more than for the Hawks to take over the top spot again, but have to admit as a huge fan of the sport I respect the heck out of the way PSU wrestles.

I agree with this. As for the posing, people gotta remember that these are kids participating in likely the most physical demanding and testosterone fueled sport there is, and it's mano v mano. Plenty of people got upset with Gilman for his "antics" over the years. He is just a fierce competitor and gets caught up in that moment occasionally. Whoop de do, get over it, right?

But you know what I hate? Interviewing these kids 10 seconds after they left it all out on the mat. These guys are exhausted, still keyed up. Good lord, give em 15 minutes to collect themselves a little.

Hate wains after time though, I hated USC with Pete Carroll, now not so much because they are lame. Lol

+ 10. Now I hate the Seahawks. Can we all agree that Cael's better than Pete Carroll and call it a day?

is Hall really 22 years old? At 22, I was finishing 2nd year of post grad work. Hall is a true freshman!

I didn't hear anyone hating on PSU, for what it's worth. Just a lot of cheering for the Hawks. Let's not generalize about Iowa fans as a whole. And let's not pretend that there isn't a TON of hatred out there for Iowa -- far more than for any other program, including PSU. Anyone who heard the thunderous boos and cheers when Gilman lost in the semis understands this very clearly.

And let's not pretend that PSU fans don't have every bit as much hatred for Iowa as Iowa fans might for PSU. They were booing and cheering against our guys this weekend (in beteeen that insane "we are" chant, which comes up every few minutes), and just look at this board or any other wrestling forums nationwide -- you'll find plenty of PSU fans expressing their disdain for Iowa wrestling.

I'm not condoning hatred of any kind from anyone, but let's keep a little perspective here. And let's stay away from being hypercritical of Iowa fans; haters all over the country are doing plenty of that already, and have done so for decades.
