Perfect time to bring in Devries

So we shouldn’t try to be better because few before Fran have been better? Does Iowa have more or less resources than let’s say ISU? If the answer is more, why should we settle for never making a Sweet 16; like ever? You are just happy with being mediocre out of fear it might be worse?? That is LOSER mentality and should not be tolerated. We should demand better.
All of the excuses about iowa and population get debunked by isu.

Yeah, I know now Cheeseburger has his sugar daddy but this has been true since Tim Floyd If not Johnny Orr.

It just seems like such an obvious fit.

I assumed he's probably hoping for Iowa but probably won't wait much longer.

You can only go so long at Drake before you fizzle out, kind of like isu football.
I’d disagree with your last paragraph. He’s already won a couple of conference titles and made the tournament twice. 6 years of winning in a mid major conference he could be setting them up to become Creighton of the Missouri Valley. It’s not that far fetched. I’d hate to see him leave Drake but I think he’d be a solid coach for the hawks.

I'll have to see it to believe it.

The valley isn't what it was 10 years ago.

4 players from the Valley starting for Big Ten schools including Krikke for us. Domask at Illinois from Southern Illinois is their 2nd best player. Lance Jones from Southern Illinois has been a key player from Purdue.

Right, the portal is part of the reason it's not what it used to be.

Also losing Creighton, Wichita st and Loyola lowered the standing.

The valley used to be a 2 or 3 bid league now its like most of the other mm.

It feels worse than the end of the Davis years.
Yeah. I think Davis got a raw deal. Hasn’t Fran been here longer than Davis by now?

If this Devries guy would be a vast improvement from Fran and he has the Iowa connection and wants the job, I don’t see why you wouldn’t pull the trigger. It’s not like Iowa basketball is a hot ticket right now under Fran.

It’s probably best for everyone, including the McCaffreys, if Fran moves on. I just know I don’t ever want to see the coach’s son on the sidelines or on the team at the University of Iowa ever again.

Bottom line is Fran HAS GOT TO GO! He has shown he can't coach period, every year we have the weakest team in the BIG, sure they win some games when they get hot from the outside, but we get hammer on the boards, their defense is 2nd grade lvl it is just a crap show. Add on how he can't win hardly at all in the NCAA tournament it is just time to move on!

How many Sweet 16s does Fran have? 13 years in and we have a dogshit team
love the "knee jerk" accusations when we have had 2 football coaches in about 50 years and Fran has been here over a decade. i think it's reasonable to hope for a sweet 16 appearance with the talent Iowa has had over that span. 2 guys playing regularly in the NBA who rarely ever were even on the floor at the same time or even as much as Conor and Patrick.

Devries would be a great replacement for McCaffery. I want to see an Iowa team play solid defense is that too much to ask?

I thought Fran did a great job his first 4-5 years. Playing his overrated sons ahead of more talented players irked me … and did I mention defense?

Ok, Fran can coach, so to say "he can't coach period" is idiotic. I think Fran struggles with subs at times, and getting bigger recruits, but he certainly can coach. He is a good coach, not a great coach. If Iowa wants to move to the next step, we will likely need to move on and find a staff that can recruit better than what we are getting at PG. Bowen isn't it, and Dix is a 2g. I do like our crop of freshman, and Koch should be a solid player, but some of our upper classmen are just so soft. Pat is just a huge liability, guy is just unwilling to board or play defense. I've never seen a guy who drives and jumps with no plan the way he does.

A) His last name is not McCaffery….2) he coaches somewhere else….3) he didn’t get his ass whupped tonite by Iowa State…

Pick one answer:
1. A
2. B
3. C
4. A and B
5. B and C
6. A and C
7. All of the above
8. None of the above
Based off our conversation yesterday in the football board I'm not sure I can take anything you say seriously.

There seems to be a lot of assumption that DeVries is panting to become the next Hawkeye men’s coach....Based on?
Iowa’s basketball situation has been effed for years...If I remember correctly, Tom Davis was “let go” so Iowa could get to the next level...Iowa has never been back to the levels of the NCAA that TD got us too...
Somewhere I have a feeling God, Frankie Solich and Tom Davis are sharing a laugh.

Then Iowa should never hired in the first place…Fran has delivered 100% on what he was hired to do….his teams win games and score points.

Now granted tonught is Men vs Boyz
But sit back and relax… the harassment for you starts tomorrow at work.
you're no doubt one of the BF loyalists as well correct? I suppose you think he should still be employed?
Fran delivers a few wins but never anything of real consequence. His faults far outweigh the positives. Some of you guys live in your fears way too often. Scared of change and for some reason are happy to keep living in mediocrity.

What might a “BF loyalist” be, 24?
I do think most here have turned their angst vs. Brian unwarranted. My contention is that Kirk made a huge mistake when he offered him the position...you can’t blame the kid for taking the position.
If you remember 24, back when Iowa was looking for Lick’s replacement, the line for the Iowa job wasn’t exactly long. Plus, Fran has delivered at Iowa,,,but the Tom Davis “delivered” at Iowa but was judged to be not good enough, too. Now what is “the new standard” you are demanding?

A coach who can recruit better.
A coach who can teach defense and rebounding
A coach who can recruit a real PG. Harding may be a good one but we will see.
A coach who can get you to the second weekend in the NCAA tourney.
A coach who will play the best player and not his kid, who is charmin soft and doesnt have any business starting.

What does that have to do w/anything? Pay attention to the game last night?

I'm guessing my administration running off one of my best players would be more concerning than a potential new job losing a game. 🤣

I'm not saying we'd land him, I'm sure there will be other options out there for him , but things aren't all sunshine and flowers in Manhattan right now so you pick up the phone and make the call. Iowa has a lot going for it and the right coach could do very well here.

I'm sure no one thought the bottom feeder in the PAC10 could pull in Lute Olson from Iowa in the early 80's, but look what happened for Arizona.

Tang made the elite 8 last year. And as I heard today on KC radio from the K St guy he’s not sure why everyone is outraged over a situation that nobody seems to really know what happened. He lost a player that I’m guessing did something worse than what we know. Is his relationship rocky with the AD? Who knows. Point being he’s still in the best basketball conference out there.

$$$$$ talks and it’s the Big Ten. Seems like a no brainer.

Also DeVries is signed until 28-29 season so it would probably be a pretty hefty buyout.

You know Devries kid is pretty, pretty, good and he'd probably follow his father to whatever his next coaching gig is.

I've seen a lot of coaches kids on college teams---they're usually bench caliber players and don't play. It is not CMAC or PMAC fault that their Dad is reliving his playing days through his boys. Fran thinks he hasn't shown favortism and he's said so before and I believe him.

I agree. I’m sure Kirk believes he’s been objective in his evaluations of Brian each year.

The reality is no father can be objective about his sons. It’s just not possible.

5 straight 20-win seasons (will be 6 this year) at a historically bad program like Drake is extremely impressive. I’m a Drake fan too and I think the Iowa job is the only reason he’s passed on other opportunities. He’s certainly had them. I would hate to lose him at Drake but IMO, Iowa needs to push their chips in on him if Fran decides to step away.
Drake is historically bad? Sorry, Maury.

Keep being a pussy and afraid of taking a risk to get better. Just settle for being an average to below average team. After all we’re just little ole Iowa. Can’t compete with big daddy Iowa State I guess.
You act like you have any say in the matter. I hate to inform you that you don't. It would not be a feather in Goetz's hat to fire a coach with McCaffery's record here and won't happen, so quit holding your breath (or don't).
