Politics is like bike racing - you don't burn matches needlessly. And 99 times out of 100, confirmation hearings (especially for mere cabinet secretaries) are needless burning of matches. Generally, the people who die on confirmation hearing hills are the ones who don't have to worry about reelection. And if there is one thing Joni Ernst is not, it is a person who doesn't have to worry about reelection.

BTW, on semifunny side note-- I heard on my drive to DC last night that Warren said she had never seen a 'nomination conversion' before. Obviously, and surprisingly given her old job, she had never heard Howell Heflin pronounce "confirmation conversion", which was memorable. Unless she was trying to distinguish herself from him, in which case the new term is a little lame. (Even more memorable than Hefllin, of course, was Alan Simpson's quip, "You know, over their lives, people change. When I was young, I had hair, thought beer was food, and I was omnipotent.")

I rather doubt that. When I think about him potentially making the call with respect to new defense systems, I can't help but recall an incident from my early career. A bidder was proposing a shiny new design for a firefighting breathing apparatus for sailors aboard ships. The trusty old incumbent was selected. The bidder filed a protest, and won, which essentially earned it the right to conduct a performance test for purposes of the evaluation. So at the test, the guy dons the new apparatus, they throw the KOH can in to activate it, and he hops on to a treadmill. Within about 30 seconds, the guy is sucking wind and rips the mask off because he's not getting any oxygen.

I know there's a lot of pissing and moaning over a lot of the noms... but really the only ones I really think shouldn't go through were Gaetz (gone already), Hegseth (unqualified), Kennedy (unqualified and crazy) and maybe Gabbard (unqualified and potentially compromised) if her ties to adversaries on background come back poorly. The others are all fine enough to me.
