Koehn's graduation leaves this position open. Haven't heard much about which kicker is leading to fill his spot. I'm assuming that Ellis and Recinos will battle it out this Spring and Fall but there is a new PK recruit from Solon who is pretty highly regarded also. Any insight?

It is always good to remember PKs can make a big difference in any given season, not only for KOs but also for those all-to-frequent critical late game FGs. You never know when you will need your PK to kick a 57 yard game-winning FG to keep your team undefeated.

Josh Proehl is the kid from Solon that joined the team as a walk-on at semester. I believe he graduated HS in 2013 and hasn't kicked in college since, but the more competition the better.

They will also be adding two true freshmen walk-ons in August, Caleb Shudak and Keith Duncan.

I seem to recall we picked up a graduate transfer from Central Mich who punted, kicked off, and kicked at his school. He had pretty good stats, and I would expect him to take over some of the kicking duties next year.

We also signed PKs Jackson Terry, Keith Duncan and Caleb Shudak as walk ons this year. A lot of bodies...we will see who rises to the top.

Recinos is listed first on the Spring depth chart. Can anyone report on his accuracy and/or leg strength? I know his performance is TBD but someone must have already seen him play / practice.

I think I've seen that between Ellis/Recinos, Recinos has the more powerful leg, but Ellis is more accurate between the two.

I thought the grad transfer was Northern Illinois, and I think we refused to file a waiver for immediate eligibility, so he joined a lawsuit against the NCAA.

I know Recinos hit multiple 50+ yarders in high school at Mason City, including a 58 yarder. He has a significantly stronger leg than Ellis from what I have seen. Accuracy also plays an important part, however, and I can't speak to that for either.

I believe you're correct, but there is a grad transfer coming from Central Michigan as well. I work with some Gopher fans (live in the Twin Cities), and we were just shooting the breeze about Football, and I mentioned we were getting this punter from CMU. They both said he was lights out in the Bowl Game against Minnesota, definitely left an impression on them. Granted, it was indoors, but they both thought it was a great addition for the Hawks (much to their dismay of course..............). ;)

I loved Koehn's big leg, especially on kickoffs. But I really hope we can find someone with better accuracy.

Miguel can reliably hit from 52-53 yards, presently. He's very accurate with KOs, averaging about 64-68 yards with 4+ second hang-time. CONFLICT OF INTEREST NOTE: I'm his dad.

I haven't seen Ellis kick FG recently, but his effective range last fall was about 40-45 yards. I haven't seen him hit KOs in over 1 year (he never KO'd during warmups at games last year); last time I saw him he was kicking approx. 55 yds with 3.5 ish second hang-time.

That player is no longer in the mix for Iowa.

The grad-transfer that is coming (Coluzzi - sp?) is from Michigan.

The Central Michigan graduate transfer is Ron Coluzzi. He's coming in to punt and kick off.

Jackson Terry is a punter. Keith Duncan and Caleb Shudak are kickers.

Count me as a Miguel fan. I like his dad and I'm pulling for him big time. I hope he becomes a star!!

I believe his father comments from time to time on this site.
