He already has the record for most losses. That win record comes with an asterisk when it takes you 50+ more games (over 4 additional 12 game seasons) to break it.
And Maris had 8 more games to beat Ruth, and Dickerson had 2 more games to beat Simpson, and Barkley will have 1 more game than Dickerson if he beats him, and so on and so on and so on. More games, be it in a season or over a career. It is still a record. And he will have earned it, regardless of how many asterisks anyone wants to put on it.
I agree, with some nuance. Having the most wins, not winning percentage, is definitive. If he achieves it, then he achieved it.
However, his winning percentage and the blowouts, etc. are important when evaluating a HOF consideration. Chances are he won’t hit the 60% threshold now established. Folks can argue he should be considered otherwise; I contend your points make an excellent argument why, without a 60% winning percentage, he should not be considered for the HOF, when applying the current standard.
TL;DR: most wins in B1G coaching; not a HOF coach (unless he achieves 60%).
Thank you. I was thinking the same thing, when I read that. Kind of like some of the delusional WVU fans that said Saban or Fisher would be coming home to roost. There wa$ no way that wa$ happening there, and they ended up getting Rodriguez to come home for, I think, $2.5 mil, which is a bargain in IMO.
IOWA is not in the same boat, but some fans are delusional when it comes to the price tag for the established “winning percentage” coaches. Doesn’t matter; if it ever happened, the fans would celebrate the hire, and then bitch about how much money the coach was making, especially if things didn’t improve quickly.
In the NFL you can fire a guy with six Super Bowls. In college it's not as easy, once you get minted as a legend the only thing that can force you out is a scandal. I don't see that happening with Ferentz. Outside of some stupid false allegations of "racism", there isn't any drama off the field. At Penn State it took something incredibly disgusting to get Paterno off the sidelines. At Ohio State it took some nonsense to get Tressel to leave.
The closest I can point to as on field declining product to escort a legend off was Bobby Bowden. But he had a successor lined up a few seasons beforehand. Same thing with Texas and Mack Brown. But Texas and Florida State have a much higher expectation than Iowa tbh. Those two guys won multiple conference and national titles. As long as Ferentz runs a clean ship and doesn't wreck the boat by having multiple subpar five hundred seasons, he is going to remain Captain Kirk.

I like b the years when the hawks have been in the hunt for a national championship. Probably 3x in his tenure. I like going to bowl games almost yearly. I like getting into big 10 title games. Love winning almost every traveling trophy. Defense has been much better lately than in past years. Special teams are better. Our news offensive coordinator is giving me some hopes.

What are you talking about? I dont think so little of our Univ, quite opposite actually. I think we’ll get some really good candidates that want to come here he ce why I dont want them to go the internal route. My reasonings for each are:
Saban - doesnt seem to want to coach anymore. If he did, he wouldnt have left Bama. Got a cush Gameday job and probably more likely to be NCAA Commish than take another HC job at his age. If he does want to coach, absolutely reach out but he’ll have his pick of the litter. I just dont see him coaching again.
Meyer - we wont touch him with a 10ft pole. He is a PR nightmare and we’ve had enough of those
BStoops - also dont think he wants to coach/recruit full time anymore. He would absolutely be the first call I’d make if I’m Beth Goetz though. You have to make Saban and BStoops say no before any other calls are made

Did I jump to a conclusion? Maybe. But considering how many times I have read on this and the basketball board (mostly from the Kirk/Fran knobbers) about how no big time or good coach would ever come to Iowa, I can’t really be faulted for it.
