Possible Portal Targets Thread

If you don’t like the Big Ten, take your fandom elsewhere dude.
Lol, I love this response. I'm 52, been an Iowa fan all my life, graduated from Iowa, my wife graduated from Iowa, we've given $$$ to the University of Iowa over the years after graduating. But if I don't blindly swear allegiance and unconditional loyalty to Kirk Ferentz, I should "take my fandom elsewhere."

I actually have the nerve to truly believe that Iowa football can be better than what it's been under Kirk Ferentz. And for that you tell me to "take my fandom elsewhere."

Lol, keep being you dude.

Did you even go to Iowa?
Guys.. I think KF wishes he had won more games than you wish he had won more games.
Unfortunately, that’s a really hard thing to do. Easy schedule or not. I think Gonzo is justified to want more and be skeptical of QB play, but we all have no control unless we donate tons of money and even then we prolly aren’t winning NC under ferentz, maybe ever. Thats ok, but we can certainly want more.

Why does he need a college degree?
Well, he won't be playing football for a living. I suppose that when he's done with his college tour he could go to trade school and be an electrician or plumber, but my guess is that education isn't much of his thing. I guess I figured after 5-7 years of college one would expect someone to have career choices a little broader than Scheels dude or economy lot car sales associate.

Let's see what the bowl game looks like and then what next year looks like. From my understanding, bowl game practices right now on offense are 90-95% passing. Lester is doing everything he can to fast track the pass game going into next year. He completely gutted the QB room over the past 10 months to where there is now no BF QBs left. KF has given over total control of the offense and QB room to Lester (obviously KF still has veto authority on critical calls, i.e. 4th down calls, etc). This is his offense right now to make as he sees fit. KF has him doing zero recruiting right now (Tyler Barnes is taking his place on the trail) so he can spend 100% of his time in Iowa City to get this passing game fixed and running like it should in a Shannahan style offense. I'm excited by that. Lester is a former high school all-american QB, he was a former 10,000 yd passer in college, he's best friends with Matt LaFleur who knows a thing or two about offense. And he'll now have a full offseason, with the guys he wants in his room. That's exciting.

Barnes new followings on twitter
1.) Matthew Henry WR ( going to be a tough get, last year alone had 1,179 yards RECIEVING). Insane numbers
2.) David Blay DT (might have been mentioned earlier, too lazy to look), offers from OU, PSU, FSU.
3.) Isaiah Sategna WR (arkansas transfer), kid has some insane wheels

After reading a few articles about the protal it seems any team can recruit players from another team before they enter the portal. Is this true or how does this work. If true college football is semi pro without contracts from the team they are on.

Did that Teslaa kid ever do anything speaking of Arkansas? We were all pretty bummed he didn't pick Iowa back in the day.

He had a solid year this last year, 400+ yards receiving, nothing amazing. Arkansas is such a hot mess of a program.

Every player has an agent. Every school has an NIL program that is technically separate from the school. Nothing stopping the agents and the NIL guys from talking.

Abilene Christian QB Maverick McIvor has entered the transfer portal, ESPN has learned. The former Texas Tech transfer ranks 4th in FCS with 3,828 passing yards and threw 30 TDs and 7 INTs this season. He put up 506 passing yards vs. TTU in his opener.

I would honestly think stocking a former 5* guy with elite legs would be a great idea for the hawks. Take someone like Ty Thompson, tell him he will get every chance to compete, or Malachi Nelson. They shouldn't require a ton of money, and gives Iowa depth that they needed.

Also, I think Abilene Christian still owes us a player-to-be-named-later as a result of the Peyton Mansell acquisition. (Not to mention Carson May, who also ended up there via Wyoming, and is still on the ACU roster.)

Kid has a nice quick release, but he is a statue back there. This is a system QB, IMO.

Get guys that excelled at MAC level schools.
That's pretty much where I'm at as well. Especially once the 105 roster limit happens. The number of guys that will be killing it at MAC schools that typically would have been walk-ons at P4 schools will be crazy high, essentially allowing for an even bigger farm system for P4 schools and at a price a whole lot less than getting some bench player at a P4.

A good chunk of them are transfers from FCS or other P5 programs as well.

I guess it takes a lot more than that to get me excited.

I do trust the staff to make the moves to make the team better, but damn it is tough to see Debbie getting 5* commits on defense.

The Huskers getting highly rated players and sucking is a rinse and repeat story.

Has Iowa had a single class rated as high as Nebraska’s since they joined the conference? Maybe once during a coaching change?

You are not wrong, but that program is a dumpster fire and still somehow pulls those types of transfers. It would be nice if the coffers at Iowa were a bit more full because this program should easily be able to outsell that shithole to the west

You guys have more NIL available than Nebraska.

They still have name value and their NIL is much better than listed. Getting Holgerson on their staff was a big boy move as far as coaching. They keep throwing darts eventually they may hit the target.

Yeah I'd think that with a top-20 NIL you'd expect more activity on that front at Iowa. I know that Rhule has said (up until this year's loss vs Iowa actually) that he wanted to try to do it like Ferentz - recruit HS players and develop. But 2 years of not being able to win games vs teams that we've held to 21 or fewer points must have convinced him that he needs to start playing the new game. We'll see how it all shakes out I guess. I really want to see how Billy B does it at NC. He's walking into a game that he doesn't understand at all.

Getting a little annoyed with the lack of traction in the portal. Could be some guys being contacted that we don’t know about but places like Nebraska… a 6-6 team that hasn’t been bowl eligible in forever already gets a 5* transfer.

If they're being contacted or visiting or whatever, it will be somewhere on social media. They're generally not trying to be quiet about it because they want bidding wars.

They are having their first visits from portal players today.

I have heard of 4 players, which is not bad. But none of them seem like guys that really move the needle… guess I’m not a coach but I would have expected maybe a big name OL/DL or WR to be connected to the program. the CB seems like a decent get if we land him. The DL from CMU isn’t awful either… just expected a little more in this first wave here.
