The Preseason Football magazines have started to roll out.
I personally buy 3 each year: Lindy's Big 10 edition, Athlon's Big 10 edition & Phil Steele
I like Lindy's the best as they provide the most in depth recruiting bio's for the incoming recruiting class and they do National player rankings by position.
Athlon's issue is ok.
You need to know how to read shorthand to fully understand the huge Phil Steele issue, but it contains a ton of fun data.
I just finished reviewing the Athlon's Big 10 edition. Here is a recap of items of interest for Hawk fans:
National Rankings:
4. OSU 5. MICH 9. WIS 11. PSU 12. MSU 35. Iowa 36. ISU
UNI ranked 19th in Division II or whatever it's called these days.
Nate Stanley ranked as the 25th best overall QB in the Nation
Noah Fant is listed as a First Team All American.
Former Hawk Recruit commit Ross Pierschbacher is listed as 1st Team All American Center for Bama
Nice little article called "One Shining Moment" that includes a spotlight on unsung big play moments from virtually unknown players - Warren Holloway and "The Catch" are featured.
Big 10 Standings:
Iowa predicted to go 8-4 Overall / 5-4 Big 10 / 2nd in the West Division behind WIS
All Big 10 Teams:
Noah Fant - 1st Team / Anthony Nelson - 2nd Team / K. Render & M. Recinos - 3rd Team
Players with Iowa ties around the Big 10:
Rocky Lombardi - listed as backup QB at MSU
John Raridon - backup OL at NEB
Will Honas - starting LB for NEB
A. Van Ginkel - starting LB for WIS
Oliver Martin - not listed on the 2 deep roster for MICH
I think MICH is way over-rated at 5th overall in the Country - I think their defense will be very good, but I don't think they are better than PSU, WIS or even MSU.
I think 6 other Hawks have a legit shot at making at least 3rd Team All Big 10:
Stanley, Wirfs, Hockensen, Hooker, AJ Epenesa & Hesse
The Big 10 opener vs. Wisconsin at Kinnick will likely have a huge say in who wins the West - win that game and Hawks could find themselves with a meeting with the Buckeyes in Indy in December.
Should be a very fun season.
